I was very confused and then I remembered that Gamma and Zimmy use toy soldiers as protection against the weird stuff in Zimmy's brain.

early on, Shadow refers to Kat as "princess Kat" www.gunnerkrigg.com/?p=225as though he also sees her as special, royalty even, just as the robots do (their mecha-"Angel") Kat's ascendance to mecha-demi-godhood seems widely anticipated by knowledgeable folk in both the Court (robots) and Forest (shadow folk)! Kat definitely had a big hand in him calling her that. Note Tom's comment: "Kat's english lessons are already looking dubious."

I'm glad you like it! I hadn't considered it before, but Anthony's rush to get away might be because he's on the verge of a panic attack. In which case, leaving might have been the right call; watching her own dad have such an intense breakdown would probably be a bigger destabilizer to her mental health than him not talking to her. At least she's used to him not talking. She did see him breaking down earlier in the chapter Annie and the Fire. Though that was not a panic attack, admittedly. (I would link but the site is momentarily down. Maybe I will edit this post later.) True! I think a panic attack is sufficiently different, though.

Folks, just a word about the debate about whether Tony is autistic or just has social anxiety of some form... we're not diagnosticians (unless we actually are, heh) and we may never even know in the end. It could be simply that Tom is drawing Tony as a personality and not a paradigm; a complex character, not a type. A colleague who is also autistic passed me this link last night that really helped me get a better understanding of what sorts of things in what combinations constitute "autism" and what sorts of things are simply considered "things that some people have in common with autistic people". See what you think. If nothing else, at least we'll be better informed about these things in general, and understanding each other better is always a wonderful thing. <3 neuroclastic.com/2019/05/04/its-a-spectrum-doesnt-mean-what-you-think/Interesting article. I didn't know about Ido Kedar or Carly Fleischmann. Thanks for sharing it! What frustrates me about autism, as a concept, is that if the symptoms of autism and their solutions can be so dramatically different, then I feel like it shouldn't all be called autism. There should be smaller, more specific categories. Or maybe just keep each symptom separate. Like, "I have a sensory processing disorder, I have difficulty starting or stopping activities, and I often need to do some sort of repetitive physical action to stay calm." I struggle with all of the things on the spectrum that this person has made, to some degree. As far as I understand it, they're also symptoms of ADHD. Or in my case, maybe it's a combination of PTSD, anxiety, and, I dunno, a learning disability? The distinctions seem unhelpful to me. I have specific problems; focusing so much on bundling them all together and giving them a header doesn't help me solve them. But I like being precise about things more than most people. Maybe "autistic" is just more comfortable for people to say, even if it doesn't tell the whole story, or leads people to incorrect assumptions. Which is fair enough, I suppose.

Also, maybe there is significance on the make-up: remember this page where StillUnitedAnnie woke up from coma, Zimmy's etheric voyage, and clipping Tony? Kat handled her the make-up to put on, and she hesitated "Maybe later". I think that was partially bc the elemental near-extraction from her soul left her dissociated from it. Huh! I forgot about that. Are there any other popular theories as to why she declined to put it on?

Fast recap of my previous speculation: I think we can infer from this page and the following that Courtnie used Surma's memory as a verbal cudgel to win one or more arguments with Anthony. Fannie is a version of Antimony that never said those things. In the final page of Get Lost, Annie points out that she has been alone with Tony plenty of times, but he is always awkward around her. I always interpreted Anja and Kat's reactions as implying that Tony's awkwardness stems from the fact that he sees his dead wife every time he looks at his daughter (but maybe I totally missed the mark there). Whatever Tony's reason for treating the two Annies differently, I feel like his treatment of Court Annie is how he always treated his daughter back when he only had one. I don't have a good explanation for his ability to relax around Forest Annie, but whatever it is, I'm not convinced it's because of something that happened in the six months that Forest Annie missed. Social anxiety is striking. But why does it strike with Court Annie and Pre-Split Annie but not as much Forest Annie or most other people? Social anxiety DOES strike Tony with most other people. He just knows how to deal with it while he's at work, where he can keep a strictly professional relationship. It's been theorized before in this very forum that he sees Forest!Annie as a "new" Annie he can start over with, and have the relationship he wish he had with the Annie he's spent 6 months with. Hot take: Something happened between Anthony and Court Annie over the six months (perhaps the argument about her makeup) that led to Anthony having an emotional breakthrough regarding his daughter. But because she was part of the argument which spurred the breakthrough, and because it'd be so obvious that it was the argument that changed things, he'd have to say, "I was wrong, you were right," which is immensely shameful and difficult for him to do. He's probably embarrassed that he even had the argument with her, and wishes to just forget about it. The important thing is: instead of being unable to talk to her because of his past actions, now he can't talk to her because of his actions in the past six months. Enter Forest Annie, who doesn't have any memory of this argument. The weight is lifted. Now he can act upon that breakthrough he had with Court Annie, without acknowledging whatever caused it. And unfortunately, Forest Annie gets to reap the benefits of Court Annie's hard work.

I'm rather surprised Jack is getting so many votes myself, as I'd personally consider him a definite non-starter. Save for when she first met him and maybe for a bit during the Torn Sea incident, all of Annie's interactions with him have not been the greatest to say the least. I've always figured the "colors" coming off of Annie were flames of annoyance and/or a burning desire for vengeance upon Jack, not any kind of attraction. And when she mentions him as a potential boy of interest in AitF, damn if she could not sound less interested, and she obviously only picked him as a default "best of the meh". But what do I know? I picked Jones, and the only real clue we have there takes place in a metaphor-heavy coma dream. Jack always felt like compulsory heterosexuality to me. The kind of thing where Annie felt like she was supposed to be interested in him because of societal archetypes but it was obvious she actually wasn't. The mechanical way she asked Jack if he wanted to kiss, and the look on their faces said it all. Annie looked half-dying, Jack's expression was so "Oh wow, you're just on autopilot right now, huh?" Given the fact that Jack was notably maturing in that chapter (and that showing Annie's flaws and more immature attributes was the subtext of the chapter), I feel confident taking his view of the situation there at face-value. I always thought the night went like this: Annie decides she should play hard to get with Jack, because that's what the Anwyn girl told her to do, and she likes the idea of trying out this whole flirting thing with someone. It fails miserably, and she's embarrassed about failing, but she didn't actually care about dating Jack so she doesn't really mind. But during their hours-long talk afterward, she does develop a crush. Notice the possibly disappointed "Oh, you're not staying? ..." And when she asks again for the kiss, it's genuine this time. I didn't read it as mechanical so much as prepared for rejection, and Jack's face seems like pity/sadness at realizing she has actually fallen for him.

Where the hell did that come from? Edit: Strong reminders of Annie's behaviour in this page. Kat didn't like it much. It doesn't seem like Kat's upset there, just concerned. I think it was more about Annie blithely bringing up her mom being dead and her dad abandoning her. You tend to worry when your friend is forcing aloofness over something you know actually hurts them. I think Paz was being a pretty huge jerk to Annie. This is fair turnabout in my book. ...also, all Paz did last time was run off to her giant crab friend. I get the sense that "Annie hurt Kat's feelings so you should break her in half!" isn't going to be quite as convincing to Lindsey. If Paz really tried to start a fight with Annie, Annie would win hands down.

It seems to me that the split happened before we heard the explosions. From our perspective the explosions happened as soon as she walked into the forest, but for short!Annie, she was in the forest for a whole night before they went looking for her.

Red and Ayilu broke my suspension of disbelief a bit. It doesn't really make sense to me that fairies would have romantic inclinations. Exactly! Nobody has ever encountered a fairy in real life who has romantic inclinations, so this story about fairies having romantic inclinations is clearly unrealistic. It vexes me that a comic would get such pertinent objective real life fairy science wrong. A non-human species which is shown to have a pretty different culture & emotion(al response)s happens to have the concept of romantic relationships and feel romantic love, despite many non-human species in real life not (romantic feelings are not innate to life). The robots were programmed to love Jeanne, the tree elves and seemingly the shadow people (see: Shadow 2) have concepts of romance and practice romantic relationships, and now also the fairies. It feels human-centric and unimaginative. I'm curious why fairies should not have romantic inclinations? Furthermore, these are fairies who wanted become human so badly that they were willing to commit suicide to get it. So even if fairies existed, and even if most of them did not have romantic tendencies, what about the skewed sample of suicide-committing-human-loving fairies? (Now I am thinking of Ariel - Mermaid...) Following from the above, I admit that my personal aversion to romantic stories likely makes me more sensitive to non-humans having romantic inclinations than them having other things, like having hands or a familiar facial structure. That's a fair point. Transfer students might be more human-esque than most. I will accept this as my headcanon. Thank you!

On Zimmy and Gamma: Absolutely no one would consider this a purely platonic relationship if they weren't the same gender. It goes far beyond anything resembling mere friendship, far beyond what Kat and Annie have for instance. Like, let aside the question of sex, because maybe the relationship is asexual; Can anyone really envision a scenario where either of them is in a serious, long-term, committed romantic relationship with someone else? It's pretty impossible, which is what Jack implied. Like, you don't have to understand the precise nuances of it but it's clearly a lesbian relationship of some kind. Saying "absolutely no one" is unfair to the diversity of opinions people can have. No, they couldn't have outside romantic relationships, but I posit that neither of them could have close outside friendships, either. Monogamy is not necessitated for romance, so it stands to reason that it can't be what defines romance. Their relationship is obviously incredibly close, and obviously not "just" friendship, but I hesitate to say that means it's necessarily romantic. There are people who identify as asexual and aromantic who have life partners. People can be complex and difficult to pin down with nice explanations and labels. I don't think my argument would change if one of them were male.

Red and Ayilu broke my suspension of disbelief a bit. It doesn't really make sense to me that fairies would have romantic inclinations. But then, every time fairy society comes up it takes me out of the story, so maybe I just don't like fairies.
I did have a knee-jerk "is he trying to make a point?/this feels like overcompensation" reaction at one point, but I think that's just my bias.

Ayilu was so quiet during the last part of this chapter that I wonder if she and Red were communicating in the ether, as faeries are wont to do.

I really hope she doesn't accept, actually. She's accepted all of Coyote's offers so far (that I can remember?). I would really like to see her reject him and stop playing into his hand.
If she doesn't accept, the Forest won't have a medium, unless Coyote backtracks and gives Ysengrin his position back.

But Renardine's loyalties are tied to Antimony's. And Rey made it clear he won't come back to the Forest on his own. So he needs a little push... And seeing the Court mistreat Annie, and the Forest treat her well, will certainly provide that push. Where does making Ysengrin attack Annie factor into getting her to trust the Forest?
