Thanks for the compliments guys! I actually feel the opposite about which voice I did better with. I always imagined Coyote's voice to be like the Robot Devil from Futurama or (as has been mentioned) like The Joker from Batman. I don't have that maniacal quality to my voice so all I could muster was a menacing whisper. I think I did quite badly. Someone else needs to audition and pull it off right. Muut is another story. I can go a tad lower with his voice but chose not to. I've always imagined it to sound quite subdued, like Kirk Thornton (who does a lot of anime VO stuff) or basically any stereotypical Native American voice. Also "ominous" can be fixed easily with effects. Slap some echo or reverb on the voice I already did and you've got "ominous". Also Patrick Warburton would make an awful Muut, what are you saying?! D;

D; I was thinking the Joker as well, but you really do make a better Coyote than Muut. The menecing whiper, as you put it, actually made his storytelling personality come out. And PAtrick Warburton was more of a referance. The guy above him (the one who played the Kingpin in Daredevil) was who I could really see as Muut. He has the type of voice that will impregnant virgins.

Michael Clarke Duncan would make a really spine-tingling Muut.
Then again, so would James Earl Jones.
I used to imagine a Dr. Manhattan-type voice for Muut, but now I see what you're saying. Both sound good in my opinion.

Not bad, but you need to be more devoid of emotion. Who was the other person you did?

This was amazing. Exactly how I pictured Jones' voice. You sound a lot like Laura Bailey.

I've often wondered why people see Jones as being devoid of emotion. To me it's more that she's completely mastered her emotionsin a Zen sort of way, as would be fitting for a person who is an intermediary as she is. But in the scenes where she's clearly flirting with Eglamore, I don't see how she could be portrayed as emotionless. Yes she's very measured and precise in what she shows in different circumstances, such as when she's testing Annie's demeanor... but I think it would be a discredit to Jones's real complexity for her to be played as flat and monotone.
In fact, I would like to hear Cantabile post a version of Jones using more her natural voice, because I think she has a good timbre for the part, but I think the effort of playing it "flat" actually took something out of the performance.

Thanks for the compliments and critiques. My natural speaking voice is a bit higher than what I had in mind for Jones, but I'm still working out the kinks of my second audition, so I may try more of an inflection the second time around.

I finally figured things out and hopefully uploaded my video to youtube succesfully. EDIT: HERE WE GO! www.youtube.com/watch?v=PKYF606FKwYThanks for the compliments and critiques. You did an awesome Jones, in my opinion.

Hey, I've got a message for whomever is working on, or thinking about working on, the music for this project! I was clicking around some old links in the art page, and I stumbled across something. It would appear that Gunnerkrigg already has its own theme! Maybe you would want to ask Tom if it was okay to expand on his idea and use this in the project? I don't know where it comes from, or whether or not anyone's already aware of it, but it appears to be canon (i.e. from Tom) so how cool would it be to use it? Here's the link: www.gunnerkrigg.com/images/No, I don't know why that particular page's 404 is this file... but a cool find anyway IMO! I also think this music is very appropriate for GKC too. There are a lot of elements to GKC that are kind of sad, but this music highlights the undercurrent of wonder and hope that I personally think Tom intends for the comic.

That's actually music from a game called 'Ico' if I'm not mistaken . I'm not sure how well the people from that game would take it if we snagged their musics .

Reyo, your voice is better for Mort, but try putting a little more emotion into your readings. You sound kind of sleepy or bored. Also, I took everyone's comments to heart regarding my Muut voice and uploaded a second audition: www.youtube.com/watch?v=YN_IYmJmCCYThat is as deep as I can go without sounding like Christian Bale Batman. Tell me if you prefer the deeper voice or not. I actually imagine Muut with a breathier voice, but I want to know what y'all think. I didn't read the lines as well as I did the first time, but this was just to show everyone another interpretation of the same character. I'd really realllly like to voice Muut no matter what, he's so cool ;D

I was thinking that I need to redo the audition "footages" anyway with other voices so I can bounce mine off of someone else's (so I don't feel like I'm talking to myself.) Does anyon know where I can get someone's voice for Annie when she's talking to Mort? And I don't know, I personally think you did way better as coyote. Your laugh was exactly what I imagined it would be, almost like a Joker laugh except a little less...joker like, but if you have more fun doing Muut then go right ahead. I'm not gonna let my opion outrank those of everyone else's. EDIT: I just noticed the youtube link. The deeper voice actually made it sound better. You have my vote on that. EDIT: I went ahead and did a second audition, this time with similar situations to see if the problem was that I really was tired/weirded out that I was "talking to myself"/nervous. Here it is: www.youtube.com/watch?v=Vo-QSqc_9lU

I feel the same about Jones. And who's to say you can't land both parts? I liked your Muut and your Coyote.

I really like Xan's new Muut, and I really love Xan's Coyote! IMO if someone wanted to do more than one voice, and the two voices sound clearly different from each other like Xan's do, and the two characters don't interact (i.e. Coyote and Muut) then sure let them do two parts.
And Cantabile, I think you'll be a great Jones too. I hope my earlier feedback wasn't taken as a criticism of your reading. My intent was to speak against the more widely held opinion that Jones is devoid of emotion, and to try to focus on the difference between being devoid of emotion and being completely in control of your emotion. I see Jones as more the latter. I may be in the minority there, but it's a point that might be worth getting Tom's opinion on.

I saw it to, and I also noticed that you added that disgust when you did your audition. That was actually a pretty nice touch.

Xanbcoo, I just listenned to your two Muut auditions... And personally, I think your first one was a bit better. Both sounded good, but I liked the sound of the first one a bit better. It sounded more... comfortable... I guess that's the right word.
I don't know that Muut NEEDS the deep voice... The more natural sounding first effort sounded the best to me.
Cantabile, Your Jones sounds good... maybe another sampling with better sound is in order... Might I suggest her interactions with James and Antimony from Coyote Stories? That's a scene I don't think anyone's done.

I have been following this thread as a lurker for a long time, and I have decided that I may be interested in auditioning for a part.
I am a GIRL and ENGLISH! So I might be just right... but I am not sure what parts are available. I could try putting together an audition for Annie and/or Kat, but it might take a while as I have never done anything like this before.
If these parts have been allocated to someone else do let me know.

Aww, nobody has feedback on my auditions? I don't meen to be pushy, but I can't judge myself. Mishmash: If you have a stronger voice I would suggest Janet or even Parley, but if you have a more passive or monotonous voice, then try out for Jones. I know it's kind of hard to know yourself, so I would just do 2 of the three for now and see where it goes. EDIT: You could even do Red or her friend Blue. Just go to the "Cast" link on the home page and pick from any of the female characters (though you'll want to do some research on whatever character you're doing. Read a few of their panels to get a feel of their personality.)

Roundup message!
Mishmash: Try out for whichever role you think your voice is suitable for. Until we hear your voice it'd be hard to give you feedback on who you sound like. Do note though that Jones has no accent according to Tom so you may want to go for one of the Brit girls in the comic. I think the plan is that we vote on the auditions at some point in the future and the parts get distributed. I'm not sure though, I'm a newcomer to the thread.
Reyo: For me personally--and this is just me, I don't know anyone else's opinion--I always saw Mort as having a high-pitched, quavering voice like he lacked confidence. Your voice--and this is just IMO--is stronger, deeper, and older-sounding than the Mort in my head. Have you thought about trying for one of the older students? Just my 2 bits.
Cantabile: I like your new audition. I kind of feel like a jerk critiquing everyone's performances like I know so much... so it is with great self-consciousness that I offer my meager opinions. That said, have you considered reading it just in your everyday normal voice? I like the measured quality of your pace, and your inflection. The breathiness sounds just a tad too deliberate... I'll bet your natural voice is plenty beautiful and vibrant enough for the role!
Again, to all, my humblest deference if my feedback is too much or is unwelcomed. I majored in choral conducting in college so I think I'm letting my knowledge of natural voices go to my head. A thousand pardons if I appear to be too much "Simon Cowell"... I mean only to help and to encourage!

If you want to do a character, please upload an audition! This is really fun, hearing everyone's interpretations of characters. Don't think that just because there are already auditions for a certain character that you shouldn't even try. We will never know who sounds best for a part unless we actually hear it. fuzzyone - I also liked my first audition as Muut better. I just wanted to see what everyone thought if I tried recording with a deeper voice. Personally I think a slight echo in Muut's voice should be necessary no matter what. I've always had the impression that Muut just kind of "thought" things at you. And in cartoon-world, that means "echoey voice".

This is my very first time even making a movie let alone audition where I voice-act for a comic (I even had to go out and buy a microphone). All of your intel is appreciated.

I was just re-reading the thread and I noticed that, as time has gone on in this project, it seems like there have been a decent number of people who were interested in doing something in the project but were confused about whether certain parts were already chosen, and whether they could still audition, and how exactly to do the auditioning...
Sandjioseph, do you need any assistance in organizing the voice talent search while you work on the music? I noticed one person had offered before but I don't know what happened with that. I have a fair amount of spare time (thanks, economic recession!) and could help significantly with the organization and dissemination of information. The thread seems to point to you as being the guy in charge, so, let me know. I'd like to help get the auditions and stuff organized in such a way that people who are still interested can know what they can do.

Isn't there a part in the begining where there's a list that says all of the different character names and who it playing them? Only about half of the character's are accounted for, but some lead parts like Eglamore and Annie have a username next to them. Does that mean those parts are taken or should we still audition for them? PS, I went ahead and found my audition for Smith. I auditioned for him to see if people would like my voice for him or Mort. www.youtube.com/watch?v=DianlipDDvgI knew I had an audition lieing around for one of the students. I'll see if I can do William sometime in the next few days.

Those names aren't final but they're the ones that sound the best so far. You can still audition as there's about another month to go.
