Yeah, there's no way that's Zimmy as we know her, Zimmy's eyes have been shown red in wider shots than this. I do like the idea that this is an illusion of what Zimmy wants to be, though. Or maybe the the sea is magic and facilitates time travel or alternate realities somehow? Could explain why they don't know what sea it is. Also: Why are we calling her MAL? Mysterious Ashen Lady, MAL. We don't think it's Zimmy, and we don't know who she is so we're calling her MAL until we find out more.

Also: Why are we calling her MAL? I think it stands for "Mysterious Ashen Lass", an invention by zarathustra30 ? I like Mysterious Ashen Lass. We haven't seen MAL's teeth, pointy or otherwise. edit: ... ... ... ... this thread has become too fast for me to keep up with, haha. I'm gonna go off now. I expect the thread pages to double when I'm back in the evening.

MAL=Mystery Ashen Lady
I am leaning towards Zimmy and this is a dream sequence or not-Zimmy. This seems like far too drastic an off screen change otherwise.
Oh god, oh god, oh god what a trip this is shaping up to be!

Honestly, now that I'm really thinking about it...
Given how much progress Zimmy's been making (if her previous appearance is any indication) it wouldn't really surprise me if she's able to pass as a normal person.
Much of her abilities seemed to be tied, somehow, to her emotional state. And for most of the comic she's been a total basket case.
Maybe now she's just got a pretty good handle on things and so she doesn't look like a shadow-eyed monstrosity anymore. I'd really like that! But we'll see.

Tom stirred us up good with this'un. Fire Spike was before my time, but did that not even draw such commentary? Before my time on the forum as well. Probably correct. Still, 4 pages in 1.3 hours is impressive. I'm pretty sure this one is by far the fastest growing thread we've had in this forum up to this point. Seriously, my first thought when I saw the number of pages just now was either the forum was bugged or we've had a sudden influx of spam-bots. A thread reaching 6 pages before the next update used to be a really busy thread, but here we have 6 pages within 4 hours. But then, the number of forum users seems to be constantly increasing, slowly but steadily, so threads getting faster and longer in average is to be expected. I'm with the "it's clearly not Zimm" crowd, although I'm not entirely sure on the "clearly" part. For one there's Tom's comment using the plural "guys", which implies we know both of them, and who else could the girl be if not Zimmy? Also, this is Jack we're talking about. Next to Kat he's the closest thing we have in the comic to a genius kid, and he might actually have found a way to "fix" Zimmy.

She helped Annie that one time, but only at Gamma's insistence. And even at her best she still had her red eyes and while she's nicer then she's still pretty abrasive. Plus her first reaction to hearing about Jack's attraction to her was pretty much just disgust. I stand by my assessment: No way that's Zimmy.

[...] This means they're currently on the East Coast. You can tell because the light on the horizon is out with the ocean, and it's not hard to assume that it's morning. Unless... (I'm being conservative here; I don't know enough about UK geopolitics or the clues we've gotten in the comic to circle locations in Scotland or (the island of) Ireland.)

Zimmy has made some progress with Gamma's encouragement, but I agree, that's not Zimmy. Their only similarities are superficial. The real Zimmy isn't even a Goth, and probably would find the style unappealing, cured or not; going her way to make herself look grim when her life has been what it is just doesn't fit the picture.

I voted it's Zimmy without having seen the page and having no idea what was supposed to be Zimmy. Okay, but now that I've seen it... "These guys" seem a bit more aged than those gals, namely Annie and Kat, but everything suggests that it is Zimmy and Jack oh my holy fucking god it's ZIMMY & JACK!!!! ...now that we're over that - well, we're not, but let's pretend we are - we can also note that Zimmy has turned from an absolute screwball to a goth, a "mild goth" (or "lame" goth, if you wish), you know, the type that listens to Linking Park rather than Sepultura. And Jack, um, the same.

This, to my mind, is an alternative with reasonable probability: it's a a substitute for Zimmy, that Jack is bringing everywhere to annoy everybody. Sorry for the girl. But we haven't seen Zimmy since she was a pre-teen kid. A lot can have happened to her too. It's really fairly possible that Zimmy would have turned out like that, made some progress and all. Edit: oh yeah, so called "double-post"! Should I triple?

(hopefully) Hopefully is the word, but this wouldn't be the first time that Tom trolled us by withholding knowledge while letting us feel that it is just there, around the next corner, and next, and next...

I vote not Zimmy, Jack just has a definite type. As far as some kind of "Vertigo" scenario, the jury will remain out until more data is collected.
Edit: Is there some way to set proboards to scroll back up to the top when you change pages? So aggravating!

I honestly see no indication that this should be Zimmy, save for the black hair and eye make-up. And admittedly the fact that he had a thing for her nearly a year ago.
And what most people seem to forget is her complete dependence on Gamma. I don't thinks that's something that'd be broken off-screen.
OR this could be the set-up for a future extra comic that explains how this happened, but I doubt it.

I think Annie's reaction points to it not being Zimmy (besides their appearances being significantly different). It's that kind of awkward reaction you have when you notice a friend has started dating someone who looks EXACTLY like their ex and hasn't noticed yet.

I could agree that most things, instead of everything, suggest that it is Zimmy and Jack, but it is tough to see what there is that not only suggests but even goes against that hypothesis. Disregarding the fact that it would be a giant 180° from Zimmy's chracter as we last saw her, in both style and attitude, the black eyes are the most obvious example, but there's also that chest that bursted in a few months. Other than that, the comic didn't make a habit of completely changing characters off-screen with no foreshadowing whatsoever.

When I saw the big cruise ship two days ago, I thought "Interesting! Gunnerkrigg Court is such a diverse comic. This chapter could contain anything. It could be som weird technology the students find on the ship, it could be some interesting sea creatures they meet, or (sigh) it could by some angsty teenage relationship drama." It looks like it turns out to be the last option, but with an interesting twist. When I saw today's page I thought "I can't wait to see what's going on on the forum!" I think MAL is Zimmy. It has been more than half a year comic time since we last saw her, and a lot can happen in that time, especially since she actually got to know that Jack was interested in her. As for Gamma, she is probably right behind them with another boy in her arm. "Tom wouldn't ruin such an interesting character by letter her become normal", some of us say. But it's Antimony who is the main character of the comic. I think her jealousy is more interesting than Zimmys sickness. (From a narrative perspective, of course...)

I'm not an English native as it may show, so the use of word "guys" implies familiarity here? Could be 'these guys??' as in not believing it's them. Seems ambiguous. And can you refer me to the 1724 eclipse reference, sir? I doubt you not, but I have not encountered it before. When I said 1724 eclipse, I meant 1715 eclipse. Anyhow, it's this page www.gunnerkrigg.com/?p=582, with blindfolded sun. May only be a hint of the foundation year of the court. Heh, Annie has a little anchor on her shirt and Kat is wearing marine stripes. Queslett and Thornhill classes were invited, I wonder if Foley or Chester classes will board this ship as well. Might be a bit risky if they do. Yeah, well. Court is a place that maintains diplomatic relationships with Keters and lets Euclids run completely without guard to "study" them, so why not? Fits on their previous record of risk management. Speaking off subject, there's one more argument why that's unlikely to be Zimmy: MAL is too busty.

Gonna have to say no. I don't think Zimmy could get rid of whatever is wrong with her eyes in as short a time as it's, supposedly, been.

Here's a hypothetical. Assume for a second that it IS Zimmy. She looks happier, healthier, and friendlier than we've ever seen. Would any of us here really begrudge her the chance to be normal, or at least closer to it? Would YOU really be happier if she continued to be strung out and dependent on one person for the rest of her life? Hardly, but (heterosexual) romance curing an incurable curse is far too Disney for Gunnerkrigg Court. The implication being a homosexual romance would? Also, who said it was incurable? Zimmy just said that in her experience, Gamma was the only thing that could mitigate her circumstances. I'm sure there's plenty about her we don't know, including if her negative effects can be reversed.

We're not sure how their connection works. If Gamma's the only thing that keeps Zimmy together, what would happen if they somehow merged. "Torn" could be about that union being pushed apart by their internal differences (Jack?), among other things. It could be a dream sequence. But a cute Zimmy-esqe substitute doesn't seem right, because of the plural "guys". What if "guys" refers to the three of them, though? Consider Annie in the ForestNo matter how serious Annie is, he's still best fit for "love" back at home. I'm with Xan here. I think she does 'love' him, in the confused way only adolescence can bring. Love is a vague meteric that defies defining, even outside of puberty. She could just be super embarrassed from their previous meeting.

Ok, so, not Zimmy, I guess. As you guys pointed out, her distinctive eyes and teeth (and, well, grime) are missing. At this point I just hope she's nice. And Jack too.
As for Jack looking older, I credit that to his spider infection. I think it's left some lasting effects on him, and now Jack looks not exactly older, but maybe worn down instead? I don't think it's something he'll ever recover from.

Daddy dearest trying again? If he figured out it's Zimmy that intervened the last time, this could be a dream specifically set up to drive a wedge between them and prevent that from happening again. edit: But not Real Life Zimmy in any case, if this closeup is any indication. Dat nose
