Enter the Seattlite to remind you that California is overrated. I'm currently studying near Los Angeles, and I overwhelmingly prefer the northwest. The land has more life and the people are nice and casual. It fits a mountain man/scientist like me. Yep, I am in the Portland Oregon area myself and I love it here. Green most of the year round, mild temperatures, yeah was get a little rain... But no natural disasters to speak of! No hurricanes like the East coast, no significant tornados like the mid-west gets. Only minor tremors for earthquakes. In all my life I have only had to deal with one Volcano which was equal parts very cool and gigantic pain in the butt. NorCal, East Bay here. Weather is awesome (for perspective news stations are making a huge deal of the ~30F weather we've had for the past few days, since it's almost never freezing) (meanwhile about half the continental US is an icy slip 'n' slide apparently), the absolute mess of people isn't. There's a fair number of faultlines right around here as well, so you feel earthquakes once every three months or so. Not much nature left..it's nice to get out to the redwoods or something (even lake chabot kinda works) every once in a while. Can't imagine living in a place like LA..eugh. SF is annoying enough to navigate. (is LA 30% one-way streets as well? )

Can't imagine living in a place like LA..eugh. SF is annoying enough to navigate. (is LA 30% one-way streets as well? ) Pretty much. One-way streets and shitty public transportation. Parking is a nightmare, the freeways are a nightmare, the police are a nightmare, the people are a nightmare. At least they got the smog under control. I bought my house as close to the foothills as possible, and I spend the majority of my time elsewhere. My idea of a good time is going in the opposite direction of LA, away from the clubs and towards the hills. You only have to go three blocks from the financial district to find places where grievous bodily harm can and will occur to unsuspecting travelers. It looks all nice and modern, and then you take a right off of 7th and WHAM! Trash-covered streets, barbed wire and homeless people sleeping on cardboard.

Wouldn't that be pound signs? He colored the bills green here so I'll say spiders ==> dollars is okay to say. Last time I checked UK money was still 64-flavor colored. But yeah he lives in England so pounds is what he spends. We have multi-coloured bank notes sure, but the shade Tom uses in that picture looks like the colour of our turquoise/green £5 notes. (I think green is just the univeral 'money' colour due to decades of US cartoons! orange/brown £10 or purple £20 notes would just look a bit odd in cartoon form!) Also didn't realise this forum was so US-centric! Go UK! and Rain!

Also didn't realise this forum was so US-centric! According to website statistics the readership in Britain is actually fairly small, even proportional to population. The comic is most popular in the US with 56.8% of visitors, with Germany at 11.1%, Portugal 8.5%, Austria at 8.4% and India at 3.4%. Or at least, that's what Alexa says. There are is also a stats page on the website itself that can give you an idea of how much traffic comes in every day: www.gunnerkrigg.com/stats/

Well, there is the " 404 not found" page, which I find pretty cool. I wonder if that's actually the 403 page? It only seems to work on folders that exist, otherwise this happens (which actually says 404) I think there's a couple Atari TTs sitting around in the attic or something, wonder if they still work..does NetBSD count as a proper OS?

37.67% of the accounts on the forum have never posted.
A further 18.17% have only made one post.

Those are actually good numbers when you think about it. People have to register to see attachments on ProBoards. In fact, that was why I registered in the first place. I had been a lurker for much much longer and got tired of not being able to see everything. I'm not sure that is the only reason though. On the two phpBB forums where I have been a moderator, I'd says the numbers are at least that weak. Whatever the reasons, statistics like these are fun.

I love the way every thread on this forum goes off topic within a few hours. Exactly the reason why I see no need for a general discussion board. If you have something to say that has a vague link with an ongoing topic you post there. If it hasn't, open a new thread or just make up an excuse to post in a existing one anyway. If you have something to say that has totally no connection to the comic (but almost everything is connected to Gunnerkrigg obviously) you might look for another forum. Another point: General discussion forums usually attract the people with OPINIONS, the kind that are not discussed, but strenuously defended. There is nothing wrong with that in itself, but seeing people shouting at each other without listening tends to drive me away.

In a proper browser (as in not this mobile garbage) there's a member list that lets you order people by, among other things, post count. I think if you know how many people are on each page, you just have to count those and add the remainder? Would still take up a chunk of time though.

I think if you know how many people are on each page, you just have to count those and add the remainder? Would still take up a chunk of time though. Took about five minutes and some division. (# of posters w/ x post) divided by (total members) Fifty people on each page, slip the remainder back in like you said, and voila. Another interesting pair of factoids I've noticed: 37.67% of the accounts on the forum have never posted. A further 18.17% have only made one post. What I have noticed is that many of the zero-post-people are actually spam. The account is created, they put a link to a website in the userpage and then just don't post. I'm not sure what that accomplishes. Maybe more hotlinks for their website? I dunno.

I'm not sure what that accomplishes. Maybe more hotlinks for their website? I dunno. Having an account also gets you around one of those prove-you-are-a-person things for searches. Proboards does not share data on people who are under 16 if memory serves so some of their partners probably harvest it via bots what do maths. Just for pure research purposes, of course. They do go hang out at other forums instead of this one. And in a way that is good because Mr. Siddell does not want to spend his time moderating them here. But that has had an impact on the growth of the fanbase. But the forum is more relaxed about memes and "AOL-speak" than it once was. Another point: General discussion forums usually attract the people with OPINIONS, the kind that are not discussed, but strenuously defended. There is nothing wrong with that in itself, but seeing people shouting at each other without listening tends to drive me away. If there was a place for making threads for off-topic things then people could go there to post. That would let other people read what they want to read and skip things they don't want to read more easily. Usually things comic-related are separate from general discussion so you would not have to even look at thread titles of people yelling at other people about Hobbits and Iron Man if you do not want to.

Another point: General discussion forums usually attract the people with OPINIONS, the kind that are not discussed, but strenuously defended. People with opinions will be fine. People with OPINIONS usually don't last long. At any rate, there is no need to suddenly jump into OPINIONS. It's been perfectly amicable so far, and I have no intention of discussing politics, religion, or any other potentially prickly subject.
