Do we have a board for genenal use in the forum? I mean, where you can talk about all the off topic stuff? Most forums I visit lurk have one, and it's usually one of the most heavily-trafficked boards. *Created after the "rate the signatures" thread

No. /thread
Basically, under the current forum structure this board is combining both on- and off-topic, and the rules do not discourage the latter.

We could have one? I mean, it could just turn to one thing though. GKC is a wide topic, and subtopics usually take ages to wear out.

Usually the abandoned page threads are where the off-topic discussion happens. The last off-topic thread was deleted. Not saying this one will, I'm just saying.

People have asked for an off-topic board before and Tom has said no. Given his general attitude towards internet, I doubt he wants to be responsible for one, regardless of moderation specifics.

I guess we could create an unofficial forum or community but is that a good idea really?

I guess we could create an unofficial forum or community but is that a good idea really? I am 50/50 on this idea. I really like the idea of getting to know my fellow forumites better, discussing things non-GC related (favorite anime, pets, pet peeves, life, whatever), but I also realize this should be... MUST be the one Gunnerkrigg forum board. Splitting members out to an external site might deplete some of the lively and interesting conversations we have here. So I am torn.

Thing is, that already kinda happens I mean of course topics aren't deliberately steered off-track or anything, but it's pretty rare to find a 3+ page thread that hasn't wandered off at least once. But yeah, it's probably not the best idea to split activity to a different board..don't want a misc board filling with activity at the expense of actual discussion (plus, maybe the proposed IM/IRC/whatever channel might be better for this sort of thing?)

Ah, well..., sorry for the dumb newbie mistake. Should have noticed the fact that the forums been very well for years without such a board before making a thread

Not dumb. It wouldn't have gotten that much support if it was dumb. I personally am a little against it, mostly because I like the forums the way they are.

Ah, well..., sorry for the dumb newbie mistake. Should have noticed the fact that the forums been very well for years without such a board before making a thread No no no! Nothing dumb about that question. Most forum boards I visit (and the couple I have moderated) always had an off-topic section. I myself found it odd that there wasn't such a sub-forum when I started visiting here. I just lurked for quite a while and eventually figured out why. Otherwise I would have asked too. I personally think any forum needs a place for just community talk. But I also know the board always belongs to the owner who makes the final rules. If Tom doesn't want one, well, that's that. Per's explanation makes perfect sense to me.

I guess we could create an unofficial forum or community but is that a good idea really? I was under the impression that the buttzone was the unofficial gathering place. If so, the GKC thread over at Something Awful's BSS forum would undoubtedly be the posh private lounge.

Hmm. This forum is polite but we *have* grown a bit quirky without general chat. And that has probably caused the fanbase to stay smaller than it should have been... which has allowed some spiders to scuttle away what could have been turned into dollar signs one way or another over the years for the author. But if Mr. Siddell is not inclined (or just doesn't have time) to moderate or midwife a general chat thing then I suppose the next best option is for someone to just start their own forum or something. Without official sanction that is likely to fizzle which is why nobody has done so already. Even if it works there will be some traffic cannibalized from this one, though that's not a big deal since the comic will keep routing new people to it. But maybe it's time to try it and see what happens. You guys who were lobbying Mr. Siddell to make you into mods, I guess that can be your big chance if you wish. You can even make him a mod on your forum.
So, names? >Combine Proboards forum with Butt Zone. You make the HALF*SSED!

If you just want to get to know random things about people (or actually learn something cool about them), the introduction thread is a good way to go. Last time I was on there, I had a discussion of firearms and Scouting.

Also, who was lobbying Tom to become a mod? That is like, the most thankless job ever. In the forum openly? Just one within recent memory but others farther back. You can search on forum, help and moderator if you wish. But I figure for every one openly suggesting it there were probably others sending mail offering to help. And yeah, doing a good job would be a pain and eat tons of time.

On this forum it wouldn't be so bad since usually people behave themselves with little outside prodding. It would be nice to be able to get rid of the spam and troublemakers faster.
I have a feeling they aren't going to just go away once this chapter is done. The internet is persistent.

It would be nice to have an actually-active moderator around here. After last weekend's incident, it's kinda clear that this isn't exactly an efficient system the way it is right now :/

And a rank amateur at that, if he emailed from an address that is linked to an online presence significant enough to identify him in real life. I think it is safe to assume he was not the brightest bulb on the Hanukkah Tree.

I'm assuming this doesn't happen too often, though..?

Not very often at all. But I guess the delay was because of the con. Also there were a lot of posts because of the controversy to wade through, that thread may have been low priority. (shrug) But if he really wanted to yank cranks for the sake of it while the admin and only mod was busy and people were ripe for it he missed his moment, so I dunno what that dude was thinking.
