Well that's good to hear! I'm just hoping some people give their personal input. There's a lot of songs on here that completely match the characters. I dunno, this kinda thing might be better for IRC.

The biggest mystery of all the comic is why Kat doesn't appear to listen to Autechre. Perhaps I've always overlooked the reference, or perhaps Tom doesn't enjoy their music all that much. Here's a few favourite tracks. UviolBineYulquenSecond ScoutEutowC/PachOverandThe L-event LP excels as well, but I couldn't find it on Google Video. Substantial snippets are available for listening here.

I searched for it, but it seems no-one has noticed this before. Strange, as Tom's liking of British folk songs is well-known, and this song is also rather well-known (at least I think?).
One of the verses of "The Garden of Jane Delawney" by Trees:
Though the rose is fair Don't pluck it as you pass For a fire will consume your hair And your eyes will turn to glass Your eyes will turn to glass
Fire head and shadow people in the same verse!
It was already one of my all-time favourite songs before I found Gunnerkrigg Court.

This is only pertinent in a joking sort of way, but chapter 61's title made me think of it:
(Actually, on giving it another listen, the mood and most of the lyrics apply fairly well to Annie's feelings trying to cope with Anthony's return.)

I don't know how people feel about it, but I listen to world artists like Deep Forest when I read back through Gunnerkrigg because it tends to hold that sort of vibe I get from the comic. There was a collab that Deep Forest did with Peter Gabriel a while back that I think really captures the vibe of the comic, ancient and modern, natural and technological.

The other day I was listening to some downtempo on the YouTubes, as you do, when I noticed the Vol. 6 livestream among my recommendations. Then when I started the time-lapse and Tom's music started playing, it was like I had never switched music. If anyone's interested in something similar, you can try this one, and then continue browsing the Psychedelic Muse channel:

Pretty much anything off Radiohead's Kid A album has the right vibe, but the title track especially calls to mind some of the comic's darker atmospheric moments. Also, I'd say that some of Tool's songs have sort of a Gunnerkrigg-ish vibe, especially this one. Jambi also kind of calls to mind Renard's connection with Annie. In a way, Sinead O'Connor's song Jackie reminds me of Jeanne, thematically if not literally, since it's sung from the perspective of a ghost who haunts the seashore, mourning her dead lover. The general haunting tone of the song fits her pretty well, in any case. Finally, the song All Your Lies by 10 Years calls to mind the Court itself, and how it blatantly covers up its more corrupt actions and motivations. Kind of reminds me of the general distrust surrounding the Court since its darker side has been revealed.

Alicia Keys's "Girl On Fire" reminds me of Annie, and how Rey and Coyote (and several other characters) would describe Annie has "having fire inside her." Also, when Annie had set her hair on fire... And then this, Kat: "Whoa, you set your hair on fire?!" Annie: "I thought it might look impressive..." Also, at the part of the song that goes: "She's living in a world, and it's on fire," I would always think of "the world" as the "Ether." I dunno, the song just makes me think about Annie... it also reminds me of Katniss Everdeen from The Hunger Games, hahaha. +1 vote for Alicia Keys' "Girl on Fire".

Listening to Spotify playlist in a shuffle mode while reading comics can lead to weird associations and, occasionally, lame jokes. And Coyote asketh: Can I play with madness? Beware what you wish for, Ys can finally be himself again and is going to break down some walls! I do like my coat, thank you for asking, oh, you are giving it to me, how kind of you!

AluK noticed it way back in 2007 already, but it doesn't hurt to mention again the ballad Willy O Winsbury in which the namesake marries Janet, the daughter of some powerful person ( Wikipedia, lyrics). Video of a nice rendition by Pentangle: As long-term readers know, Tom references a lot of English folk songs in the comic.

I ran across this exact video the other day, and never tumbled to the fact that it was about a Winsbury and Janet pairing. Good catch!
