I hope no one will mind the double posting, new things just keeping popping up in my mind, and I didn't want to make my other post insanely long. I was just looking at the most recent treatise and it seems to bring a few interesting things to mind... In the treatise, they are both facing away from each other, Annie towards the forest, and Kat toward the Court. Perhaps whatever happens, both of them will become more focused or take refuge within the forest and Court? If a rift forms between Annie and Kat, I could see Annie beginning to rely on the forest for comfort, much in the ways Surma did, and no doubt she made friends over the summer that we will probably see in the upcoming chapters. And I could see Kat just throwing herself into working on robots. -Both are separated by Jeanne, her sword, and the green arrow--that seems to indicate there will be some sort of separation between Kat and Annie, whereas in the previous treatises they are generally not physically separated at all. -Yet, by the tendrils of Annie's hair wrapped around Kat's arm, I don't think the two of them will have a permanent or necessarily drawn out rift, which wouldn't be good since I think it's been made pretty clear that both Annie and Kat seem to represent the Forest and the Court respectively, the best each has to offer and how it isn't impossible to coexist and balance each other out. -There also seem to be some implications of them growing closer to other friends, with the pigeons in Kat's hand seeming to reference City Face or Paz and white spider Zimmy--although this seems a bit of a stretch since Zimmy and Gamma don't seem to be really interested in much of anything other than what happens to them. Or in another stretch it could indicate Jack. This is all pure speculation and I'll admit I didn't use the best analysis, just a few thoughts. :]

Yennoe, something I've been wondering for a while is whether any similar 'break up' happened between Surma and Anja. It could explain why Annie never met Anja or Kat before coming to the Court. I mean, if Surma and Anja were still as close is it is portrayed they were during their school days, wouldnt Anja want to come see her friend before she died and say her goodbyes? And it is made fairly clear that Anja and the others all knew what was going on. Tom said somewhere that Surma broke off all contact with her friends when she left the Court. Anja didn't know of her death until she received Annie's transfer notification. Thanks! I did not hear that one. But still, it makes he wonder why Surma would break off all contact to the court like that, it strikes me as rather sad, and unfair to Anja and the others in that case. Did she come to have something against the court?

Yet she sends her daughter there, who knows? I'm sure it will all turn out to be even more complex than expected. hehehe also, if someone hasn't said it already, and although it is totally stereotypical to say this (especially as a lesbian that has long flowing hair and dresses girly myself) did anyone else see Kat's new haircut and think "ooh..so she's coming out!" and then remember what a raging hetero she is. ? anyone?

More likely, it was Dr. Carver who needed a place to drop off the child that slowly killed his wife. Gunnerkrig would seem like an ideal spot for a freaky creature like her.

"She passed on a month ago. It was her wish that I continue my education here." So jossed? Although not saying Anthony didn't use placing his daughter in a boarding school to his advantage.

Just went back and re-read this chapter so far, and I just wanted to note how striking a contrast Annie's new appearance makes when she's standing in the dormitory area. Dorms=so very cold and mechanical (Court). Annie=so earthy and natural (Forest). It's a really cool effect.
Also, here's the real, burning question:
Can Annie fly now?!

Those are nice boots. I wonder what they were made for? Pwning? Aaaaaaaaanyway. Let's see if wednesday brings clarity if Kat's distancing is only because of Annie's sudden departure or if other thing had happend. Like Eglamore getting eaten by a grue. That probably would dampen Kat's mood significantly.

Maybe Kat was robbed! Or was in a near-death experience. Being in one of those makes you kinda spacey I bet.

I'd almost think that in these few minutes it seems that Annie and Kat have almost switched personalities. Annie's suddenly showing her emotions while Kat is reserved and distant. I hope the court didn't had anything to do with it in a similiar way as the forest life has affected Annie.

Not head-over-heels about Kat's new hairdo. It soesn't even go up or something. And awkwardly smiling Annie is cute in a strange way. But still, it makes he wonder why Surma would break off all contact to the court like that, it strikes me as rather sad, and unfair to Anja and the others in that case. Did she come to have something against the court? How about Renard? i don't like this kat She's not here for you entertainment... Oh wait she is... But you I hope you know what I mean. Heh.

Seeing you say that, I went back and looked at yesterday's page again... and it's interesting that Kat doesn't look nearly as out of place in the blue-gray surroundings as Annie does. The clothes she's wearing actually match the walls.

Why oh why the cheesy lyrics have to come out?
On topic: I don't think I actually want to see the next page, out of fear of what is going to happen. I can barely look at this one. It just fills me with dread.

Those are nice boots. I wonder what they were made for? Absolution. "See, Kat? In spite of how things look I was thinking about you lots and here is the proof. Boots! I made you boots over summer break! And you don't really need to wear shoes in the Wood so you know it's a luxury made just for you." I wonder if Kat is just worn down from a fairly lonely holiday. *shrugs* She was expecting to go on a fun holiday with her best friend, instead she spent it with her parents. All the things they did, she would have been thinking about how much more fun it would have been if Annie had been there. This might have also brought it home to her that she doesn't have too many other close friends, which would have made the holiday, as I said, fairly lonely and resulted in a more withdrawn Kat, at least temporarily. That's what I'm hoping for. Kat is emotionally fragile also, so she may just be expressing a combination of weariness and wariness, given both her own long summer and the circumstances surrounding Annie's sudden departure. She doesn't know what has happened to her friend, but obviously something significant, so she's being reserved (while still expressing a little of her resentment) until she has a better feel for what the status of their relationship is. I think once she knows where things lie, she'll be more vocal about things. Kaboom.... Agreed and I would add that this is a way for Kat to regain some control over the situation. It is a sad truth about human relationships that between two people the one in the relationship who values it least is in control. Whatever else happened, Antimony blew off summer break plans with Kat. Kat probably assumed that their friendship was one where that sort of thing wouldn't happen. From a position of apathy (or as aaroncampbell put it, being reserved and wary) Kat can decide if this redefinition of the friendship is permanent or not without emotional investment. I hope it lasts a couple chapters, that would make more room for Jack in the story as the techno-lovin' mystery-solvin' partner. And I agree that when Kat and Antimony finally reconcile then Kat will allow herself to be mad/hurt by Antimony ditching her.

I still wonder sometimes - if Tom did pair Annie up with Jack, who'd scream the louder in protest: the people who see Annie as indifferent to romance and hormonal feelings, or the people who want Annie and Kat to be in a relationship?

Or, rather, she just wants Kat to try walking in her shoes before she comes to conclusions.

Those are nice boots. I wonder what they were made for? I wonder what they were made from. I can understand Kat's reaction, Annie just upped and left without telling her why, and comes back looking like she had a really good time, whereas Kat probably spent all summer on her own with no contract from Annie, having no fun. I'd be pretty p*ssed off in that situation.

The loudest squawkers would be the people who 'ship Kat & Jack. Now would the obligatory obnoxious 'ship portmanteau be "Kack" or "Jat"? Or maybe, to avoid confusion, we go for Kat's full name and get "Jatrina".

Also, Jones was asked to report what happened to Kat, but who knows if she did or what she actually said or how it was taken. This isn't what she said. In fact, she mentioned anything but this. Annie, looking at Jones: "Can you tell Kat for me? And tell her not to worry. And send her my love. And Reynard."
