I assumed it was an effect similar to how a movie will be able to affect you on more levels if you're in a movie theatre than if you're watching it on a 14" TV set. The girls are being immersed in the imagery and emotionery in a way we're not, so we'll just have to accept that they're crying over Jeanne's misfortunes while we're not.

They had just experienced some fairly heart-rending memories. It's perfectly understandable for them to be affected.

Also, it's happening to them directly in the story. We're experiencing it knowing that it's just a story, so that gives us more detachment than the characters in the story would have.

Well, given that Jeanne and greenguy are complete strangers to Parley, she should have started out at a fairly high level of detachment. But yeah, I'm not saying it's not normal to burst into etheric tears just by hearing about other people's random misfortunes.

Kinda depends on how you define "random misfortune" Jeanne loses her keys = no weeping Jeanne stubs her toe = no weeping Jeanne witnesses her lover's murder = weeping Jeanne trapped and left to die = weeping Jeanne loses her Starbucks coupon for a free latte = no weeping.

Honestly, if I met someone and they told me their true love was shot with an arrow at the bottom of a chasm, I'd be like, "OK..." But then if they thrust me into an IMAX dome showing a faithful reconstruction of the tragic incident, tears might follow.

Tell me about and I'll sympathize. SHOW ME, and I'll be bawling too. And I'm a guy.
