And Annie apparently had no trouble finding an ant to kill, in order to bring Ketrak so he(?) could pass a message to Muut. Good catch! www.gunnerkrigg.com/?p=526And worms, Kat dug up a worm for City Face. www.gunnerkrigg.com/?p=748Sometimes a cigar is just a cigar... Tom likes birds and spiders, and they gotta eat!

I just noticed that it is explicitly stated twice that there are no rats in the court, once after Zimmy gets rained on for the first time, and once in Divine, when Kat says it to Zimmy. I don't know why that would be significant, but it was apparently worth the panel space to mention it twice. Can't believe I missed that.. I always thought Gamma's remark was important, but completely missed Kat repeating it. Well that's what this thread is for.

This may have been discussed already, on this thread or elsewhere, but on page 133 when Muut comes to bring Annie the blinker stone, he tells her that Mort "is new and inexperienced". Doesn't that contradict what we recently learned about Mort's back story? How can it be that he's been around for 60-odd years and never once learned how to be scary, or made a friend?

It's a wonderfully ominous, if vaguely defined, detail that I hope to see refined later on.

Doesn't that contradict what we recently learned about Mort's back story? How can it be that he's been around for 60-odd years and never once learned how to be scary, or made a friend? :( It was a busy time and he got over looked. Barring Kat who was encouraged to befriend Annie by her mother Mort was the first friend Annie made at the court and in many ways her friendship with him was the most organic of any of her social connections. Her friendship with him was a definite growing experience for her. I think it's possible that Mort had an inkling that his job "scaring" students wasn't really all that it was cracked up to be, and that he also recognized that by befriending Annie and seeing her struggle and grow he'd had a bigger impact on her and Kat than he'd had in previous interactions with students attempting to scare them over the years. He played an important role in Annie coming to terms with her abilities as a guide and in her ability to relate to other students but we are left with the impression that he really didn't have much to do before she came along (hence being inexperienced and in Muut's mind 60 years is probably pretty new, plus Mort was so young when he died.)

Also remember, Muut was being less than completely honest with Annie. The whole connection with Mort was a ploy on his part to get the blinker stone to her. Mort didn't even know what the blinker stone was, Muut pushed him into it. So his "thanks" was about as genuine as the gift having come from Mort. Muut pretty much admits it on this page and the next.

I thought it was one of the coolest things about that chapter. I wouldn't have minded if they'd kept their hair like that for a while after the simulation was over.

One of my fav pages. I don't think there's much significance to their hair colour change beyond showing that they've become close friends by then. Everyone in the simulation gained some streaks in their hair. Maybe they got to choose the colour and Kat and Annie were like "Yay, let's switch!" Annie and Kat are just the only one we got to see in colour on the "poster". Interestingly, in the second Spacemonauts Adventure Parley got black streaks too, while Smitty's colours remained the same.

The "READ" sign, Kat's "Important Stuff" book and her "Protein is great" sign all use Spirit Medium. It's a popular typeface at the Court.

Also, there are some lover initials ( S & B ) carved on the stone, just up of the Antimony seal symbol on www.gunnerkrigg.com/?p=787

S+B goes as far back as chapter 16. Maybe even earlier? I need to reread the comic again... I wonder what the significance is? I'm wondering what Tom Siddell's wife's maiden name was. (The only real-life picture I found with Tom and a female reasonably likely - unconfirmed - to be his wife, the lady didn't look much like Tea. But then, real-life Tom doesn't look much like cartoon Tom either.)

This has probably been brought up before, but I don't recall having read it here and it at least is not mentioned in the page thread, so, here we go: To Jimmy's question, the (non-exhaustive) answer is Muut. Not exactly the same phrase, but definitely "talks like that". Not suggesting that it means anything significant, although not excluding the possibility it does, either. It is just something I only noticed on reread and thought was cool.

Looking at the most recent retrospective from Tom, I noticed the jersey that Annie left at the side of the river, and that reappeared as "evidence" when Coyote and Ysengrim came to the court to complain. Just about everything in every scene is important, a testament to Tom's dedication and artistry. :)

Now, which of the girls always has the moon on her side of the treatises?

I just realised just how much more sinister Helpful Hetty could actually, especially with those hypodermic needles. Yes, it just hit me just now. I know the spirit was trapped in the Hetty doll, but dang, it was wholly appropriate.

I only just noticed that on this page www.gunnerkrigg.com/?p=220 and the subsequent one, there are three interesting things. First, since Robot says '-oor mommy', he was interrupted in the middle of his internal monologue, meaning that he's been probably constantly thinking about this from the moment that his CPU was under the control of the evil shadow. Second, we still don't know what that blue part marked with the Court symbol is. Thirdly, in the next page, Robot thinks he might be in heaven. Assuming he's being serious (which I would assume, due to how robots are) it means there is indeed a set of robot religious beliefs before Robot's Angel Cult came along.
