Since the whole plan has been blown up, next chapter we're going to see a Court meeting with the forest about expelling Annie, Kat, the faeries and Parley out of the Court for meddling with classified things. I HOPE NOT. So do I. If the Court does come down that hard on Annie and Kat, I can't see how the comic can continue (short of a new etheric girl and a new sciencewhiz girl coming to Court and taking over where Annie and Kat left off - and I don't think Tom would be able to pull that off). But the way things are going, unless Andrew makes a miraculous recovery, I can't see how such a meeting can be avoided. I'm sure that Tom is too good a writer to lead the story into a corner - but I can't even guess what his solution to the problem will be.

I don't understand why people think that the Court being angry enough at Annie to kick her out would be the end of the story. It would just become the story of what she does after that.

Smitty is lucky. Bet the sword slid between his heart and lung and he's going to come out of this with just a pleuritis.
OR maybe Jeanne stabbed his ethereal heart and he'll lose the ability to love and care... He'll dump Parley, turn into a psychopath and start to use his powers for evil

Personally, I hope that Smitty's wound is purely physical; I think he has a better chance of survival that way.
If Parley can *bip* him directly to an ER within the next 30 seconds, even with purely modern medicine he might live. With whatever the Court has, the odds can only improve from there...

Uh Tom. We may have a problem. Smitty is my favorite character. I fully expect plot twists that make all this okay. Somehow. =(

Can't wait for tomorrow to know what's going on! Maybe the Faeries found a way to mess with Jeanne's head without the convoluted illusion? Like, throw everything of by 1 or 2 meter to the left?

May I submit two items for consideration!
1. Smitty has his super luck lucky luckiness that helps him be super all the time lucky in a lot of ways! Ways which are, to say the least, extremely statistically improbable!
2. Dextrocardia situs inversus is a form of congenital abnormality in which the position of the heart is actually on the right side of the chest instead of the left. Regular, 'incomplete' forms of Dextrocardia where the heart is still on the left side but is simply pointed in the opposite direction from usual is believed to occur in approximately 1 in 12,000 people. 'Complete' Dextrocardia, of the sort that would have Smitty's heart be not where a long offhand dagger is now, would be profoundly rarer, but has been known to exist!

Yeah, and we saw how Katara vs Zuko went down. Was about to say "What are you talking about? Zuko won that fight". Then remembered it was Azula who won. *Sigh* Azula. Best villain of all times. By the way, I feel like the evidence for the elf being a water elemental is... not very strong.

By the way, I feel like the evidence for the elf being a water elemental is... not very strong. I don't think he'll be a water elemental in the sense that Annie is a fire elemental, but with the appearance of his ether-self and his (almost literal) ties to water the entire story, there's a non-zero chance that he'll have water powers. Assuming it even IS Elf Boy. Those green tendons could mean elf, or they could be rotting. Or it could be algae. Oh god there are so many possibilities.

Perhaps Jeanne can't kill anyone without the magic of the arrow, that would explain why there isn't any blood... I'm not too fond of these explanations. If it's turned into a ghost knife, it should've just passed right through him (or at least I think that's how ghosts work in Gunnerkrigg, it might be worth reading some of Mort's chapters), but if we look at the pages we can see that it's stabbed into his shirt and therefore hasn't gone right through him. As for the idea of the knife being able apply pressure but very specifically not kill, frankly I think that would just come off as bad writing. It'd be more sensible if Tom were to make this just another fay trick or have it be something to do with Smitty's luck.

"My name is Antimony Carver and I would like to share with you the strange events that took place while I attended school at Gunnerkrigg Court". www.gunnerkrigg.com/?p=1Not to mention that the Court, if it really became displeased with Annie and Kat, would be more likely to lock them up (where they could be safely watched over) rather than expel them (after which, they'd be out there doing who knows what and the Court would be living in constant fear of that). Though an imprisoned Annie and Kat wouldn't be able to do much, either, which would again raise the question of how to continue the story from there, short of a few hundred pages of them doing homework in their cells. This is what I'm most eager to find out - how Tom's going to continue the story long-range when what's happening now (Smith suffering a serious, probably mortal wound - even if he doesn't die, it'll be all but impossible to conceal this from the Court administration) would most likely result in the main characters being grounded for the remainder of their time in school, with the Court most likely taking a "no more adventures for either of you" tone. I'm sure he's worked out a solution for this problem - the big question is what it is.

I doubt it would be so simple. Coyote wouldn't take it kindly to his medium being locked up. The Court would have to try some kind of measure against Coyote (which would probably fail miserably), not to mention Anthony Carver, Donald and Anja Donlan and Eglamore mounting a rescue mission, Zimmy trying something on her own, the robots declaring a Holy War to release their Angel, the Psychopomps working with the Realm of the Dead to rescue them, or God Machine Elohim Kat releasing her true power and going Old Testament on the Court.

Another idea: If Smitty really does suffer some damage from this (*knocks on wood*) could the Court spin this as the Forest medium directly endangering the Court medium (and his protector)? Could they interpret this as Forest aggression, of course ignoring completely that the Forest has nothing to do with this? This is not just some collapsed building and it's not any Court student but a diplomat basically.

Perhaps Jeanne can't kill anyone without the magic of the arrow, that would explain why there isn't any blood... Are those muscles growing on the bones of Elf-Man's hand? What if he's coming back from the dead? I wonder what that would mean for Jeanne if he does.... yes, (at top of page) I thought so too. Very unclear what sort of frame of mind he will be in once he's fully back... but what sort of nasty etheric/magic has Diego whupped on him?? His body literally rotted away while he was still alive (I doubt that Diego can actually resurrect the dead, and his etheric self remaining intact in the arrow suggests he was still alive at some level). The mind boggles... I wouldn't be surprised if Elfy was in a rather bad mood....

So according to your ghost sword theory, Smitty is ...etherically dead? That can't be good either, even if the body survives. Maybe he doesn't have a soul in some sense, rendering him immune to Jeanne's spirit blade. Or hey, maybe we can use that green arrow thing to trap him as a rage ghost. That would be cool.

I think I see what's coming up, at least for this whole skeleton deal. Each time we've seen the skeleton, either its right hand has been obscured, or it looks more like a small lump than its other hand--rather, a closed fist (reference: 1, 2 ). Compare this to how the green elf is holding something in his right hand, and in today's page, it's the left hand that's opened and reaching for Annie's boot. So where's the right skeleton-hand in today's strip? Probably still holding something; by my guess and several others', it's Jeanne's heart, which he's here to give back personally. Objection, look at panel 2 in the first link you posted.

I'm sure he's worked out a solution for this problem - the big question is what it is. "You went out on a mission under which our court medium perished?!? This is ground enough to be expelled, not to mention bringing in the police! What I... what? They were removing Jeanne from her guardian position? ...that's impossible. No I'm not commenting on their abilities, I'm saying it is literally impossible for them to have removed an arrow with which a member of the Gillitie forest was being kept in place after death, because there HAS NEVER been any such protection in place on this school. The mere notion that the court would've ever used one of the Gillities unwillingly is absurd, such an action would end all possibilities of cooperation between the two entities, not to mention be a legitimate ground for warfare. ...As is well known, there are no records of any Jeanne in the court's records. If you look at the records this Monday I'm sure you'll see there has never been an Andrew Smith enrolled here either. No records. And I'm sure that most students will be mostly unable to recall any such person ever having studied here, so you'll get away scot-free, Ms. Carver. You think you recall such a person, you say? Enjoy your school lunch, I answer." --- I don't think it will happen, but that would be one way to keep the protagonists out of trouble. If publicly admitting to what was going on down the ravine would be too great a catastrophe to the court to consider then they must cover it up. Covering it up would mean not being able to punish our heroes either.

What if Jeanne and Lettuce Elf aren't able to recognize each other and they fight and destroy each other? could happen.... we don't know yet how completely Mr Green will "recompose"... he could end up looking kinda zombie-like/half decayed. And Jeanne is rather changed as well. And if both are in non-thinking rage mode... but actually, I think Jeanne, as a ghostly sentinel, probably has heightened senses for detecting other beings in her vicinity. We've already seen she could "see" Parley's gleaming heart. So I suspect her enhanced ghost senses could detect His Green-ness and who he is/was even is he looks a bit worse for wear....

The prospect of the two lovers our heroes are trying to save mutually killing each other is of course tragic. But the alternative, a psycho rage ghost of hate passionately making out with a half recomposed wood elf zombie, would be terrifying.

If Smitty lives, then the gang can tell the Court...
Smitty and Parley were sparring. Smitty got in a lucy slash that cut Parley and Parley's newly aquired Dragon Slayer abilities made her react by stabbing Smitty where his heart should be. Luckily he survived long enough for Parley to BIP him to medical care. Parley is really sorry and promises to develop more self control. Smitty backs her up and all the Court does is make Parley work on her self control (maybe with Anthony as her instructor).
This isn't very believable, but the Court doesn't know about Jeanne or her boyfried, so it may be more believable than some wild tale about centuries old rage ghosts and zombie elves. EDIT: and Mecha Angels. Now that I've said it, it would be hilarious to see Annie tell the truth and see the Court's incredulous reaction.
