Besides Gunnerkrigg: Spinnerette (considering dropping this one) Spinnerette does poorly combine serious story elements with its usually silly universe when it tries to be serious. In its defense, it has recently revealed that the latest plot arc is the result of a new villain's mind-control. Yeah, but for me, having the mind control explanation doesn't really make the harem anime parody turned supervillain battle any better, because I just found the entire thing to be an intolerably unpleasant read. At this point I'm just checking on it to see if the current plot thread has ended yet. Depending on where things go after the current chapter is over I'll either drop the webcomic entirely or write off the harem anime parody as a big lipped alligator moment.

Eh, don't worry, EGS has no buffer whatsoever, so it regularly stalls in it's update schedule. OK, but the reason I have trouble finishing it has more to do with the comic itself. I like the characters, but I'm not to impressed with his storytelling. And I guess I don't really understand the references to high school culture. EGH. I just finished the entire archives of EGS and I have never been more conflicted about a webcomic.

There is so much I dislike; the art is mediocre at best, I don't care about the movies and games, the moralism, the storytelling... but the characters are great. I bookmarked it on my tuesday list, that's a slow day since Nimona finished.

I can't recommend all of these free webcomics to everyone but there should be something here for everyone. If anyone wants particular recommendations PM me with genre and likes/dislikes and I'll get back to you. I'll avoid putting comparative reviews because that would be an apples/oranges situation but I'll put a few key words behind eack link. I've got more but these are the ones that I check regularly-ish. [edit] Some are Not Safe For Work (NSFW) and are marked as such. Read at work or in the presence of your significant other at your own risk. "Scenery pr0n" is not porn but refers to landscapes where more time and effort then necessary to establish the scene was used to make them beautiful, compelling, or fascinating, just in case anyone is not familiar with the term. Some webomics here listed are completed or are otherwise no longer updating but are still worth reading if you like webcomics of those types. Have an archive binge. *sigh*, I used to love Sluggy.
Nowadays I'm down to Gunnerkrigg, xkcd, and Erfworld. And PA, but they're on the knife's edge, and unless there's some drastic change, it's getting dropped soon. Girl Genius is trending that way for me, too.
Love the idea of Erfworld, but I do wish it was more consistent.

*sigh*, I used to love Sluggy. I think Sluggy Freelance passed its prime with the conclusion of the end of the world arc and is now looking for a direction to go... but I have enough involvement with the characters that if Gwyn falls in love with and/or decides to seduce Torg I will laugh my @ss off. Girl Genius is trending that way for me, too. It does seem to be dragging, but maybe it was just at a high point during the battle for Mechanicsburg. Have you read Foglio's older stuff, by the way? It is available through the other comics link here. Buck Godot Zap Gun for Hire is worth a look.

Sluggy lost me during...man, I think bun-bun was on a pirate ship lost in time or something? It's been a looong time. The early stuff was so good though.
For GG, the Battle of Mechanicsburg would have been hard to follow regardless of what Phil did. But to skip forward in time and just basically reset Agatha's power level to that of a lone girl on the run again...it felt like he painted himself into a corner. Using the big reset button will lose me almost every time, and so pressing the button and then not having something really spectacular to follow it up with has kept me around just because no one comic has irked me enough to hit the unsubscribe button in my RSS reader.

If you have not read Sluggy's Years of Yarncraft stand-alone you should check it out. For GG, the Battle of Mechanicsburg would have been hard to follow regardless of what Phil did. He bought two more years (max) before he has to resolve the Mechanicsburg stuff. I think the real reset may have been swapping out Tarvek with his more-menacing cousin which I'm guessing wasn't planned in the original concept as it throws the whole love-triangle thing way out of balance.

I *think* he needed to get her to France, but as things stood, there was no short way of doing it. I stopped reading sometime during Namek/castle and only came back with this reboot. If the story actually progresses and doesn't stall out, I'll stick around.

He may be the foil that's assembling the kingdom for Tarvek to rule later... in which case someone's superfluous once the political alliances are done, even before the town's free.

Even at the relatively fast update speed of three color pages per week anything more than saying "hello" requires a bit of commitment...

Exposure should have been tagged NSFW. I think it tried to justify its name about every other page - and that is NOT including the tendency of female characters to wear skimpy swimsuits on any excuse.
And my review of it on another forum was "the plots and characters are even weaker than the costumes."

Balderdash! Or, A tale of Two Witches is one I noticed pretty recently, and I adore the artist's style. Updates (at the latest word from the creator) once a week. The story is nothing particularly intense so far, nor does it give much of an indication that things will ramp up into high gears any time soon. Two main characters are empathizable, but still seem to have most of their development and story arcs still ahead of them. Safe for work, and I don't see that changing either. In case anyone else has read it Compared to Anthony so far, Master Fausto is a soft, welcoming, weirdly pink-haired man. [\spoiler]

I've given it a reasonably complete scan and must disagree; the cheesecake is pushed to the limit but all naughty bits are covered by cloth, bubbles, steam or whatever. I have added "upskirt" so that hopefully anyone who might get in trouble at the workplace will avoid that one while there. And my review of it on another forum was "the plots and characters are even weaker than the costumes." True, but I found it late in its life when it was doing a parody of Scooby Doo so here it is. Too bad they didn't focus on the over-the-top funny all the way through.

I read a few - some I just binge occasionally, while others I follow pretty closely (or read the lot quickly in the case of a couple of the concluded ones). These are the latter: Still running: Gunnerkrigg Court - Naturally Order Of the StickErfworldDarths & DroidsBad Machinery (aka Scary Go Round)Hark! A Vagrant!Girl GeniusxkcdQuestionable ContentIndexedGo Get A RoomieSandra and WooDresden CodakConcluded, alas:Nimona - A techno-fantasy story of a villain and his complicated sidekick. What can I say but: my feels. My feels, and it was amazing. Finished only recently, and unfortunately you can't see the full run online anymore (just the first 3 chapters). The book is on way though (already pre-ordered mine, plus a couple for gifts). Achewood -Well, it stopped updating, and I do miss. Concerned: The Half-Life and Death of Morgan Frohman - Silly and fun comic created in Gmod. Stars Morgan Frohman, an idiot average joe who just wants to be oppressed by the Combine, and his tendency to obliviously causes chaos and destruction wherever he goes. The Last Days of FOXHOUND - Comedy/tragedy/parody about MGS3 mini-boss squad. Not the prettiest comic, but I think it grew into its style. And while jokey it developed a lot of heart during its run, and could get quite serious at times. Platinum Grit Less concluded, and more "just stopped in 2009". Which is a shame, as it had potential. Follows the surreal adventures of a trio of oddballs (NSFW adventures in the case of Nils) as they encounter mysteries, conspiracies and assorted weird stuff. Scary Go Round - Spiritual predicessor to Bad Machinery. I always liked the description of "postmodern Brit horror" it was given. Makes me think of things like Shaun of the Dead & Hot Fuzz.

Spinnerette does poorly combine serious story elements with its usually silly universe when it tries to be serious. Do you like more a combo of mind control, harem anime parody and supervillain battle work better the way it's done in Magick Chicks? I'm not saying it's pleasant, but it's cool, and also an interesting mystery. Yeah, once everyone turns into ponies you might as well be reading Fallout:Equestria or something. Or "My Little Fortress: Friendship is Magma"? For GG, the Battle of Mechanicsburg would have been hard to follow regardless of what Phil did. But to skip forward in time and just basically reset Agatha's power level to that of a lone girl on the run again...it felt like he painted himself into a corner. Using the big reset button will lose me almost every time, and so pressing the button and then not having something really spectacular to follow it up with has kept me around just because no one comic has irked me enough to hit the unsubscribe button in my RSS reader. I dunno, the present plotline is pretty cool IMO. As were two (or three? all those dances with changing partners...) last battles.

My problem with the spinnerette thing was mostly with it's execution, since spinnerette's harem anime parody was pretty bog-standard and boring, and in service to a confrontation with an out of nowhere antagonist who probably won't show up again. The unicorn gored the earth pony with it's horn in the chest, breaking the sternum and puncturing the left lung! The Earth Pony has trouble breathing.
