I am also getting concerned about the fact that Zimmy hasn't been seen since we got here. She was in the ballroom with Kat and Paz so surely should be near them now. Has she somehow fused with Kat/the ship/Zimmingham?

Now swat him around a little! Bad robot ship! Bad! Do you realise how many people could slap a robot this big on the stern and live to tell of it? " Thag Surrender! Thag Surrender!" Now do the giraffe shadow-puppet thing, Kat. Of course.

If that is the case, I predict that the final apotheosis of the comic will somehow involve Antimony bringing about the end of the ability of the AEther to have this sort of effect, finally resulting in her release, along with the demise of all AEther-powered entities like the Psychopomps and even Coyote (perhaps a sort of collective heroic sacrifice...Coyote might even find it funny, somehow...) "The end of the Age of Magic" is often a major element in fantasy stories ("The Lord of the Rings", for example), and I'd wondered myself if Tom would take such a course for the ending of "Gunnerkrigg Court" But we won't know until it reaches its end (which, I hope, won't be for a long while).

Speaking of relation ships and all that, I noticed the other day that I'd been operating under the unfounded assumption that Lyn would either reject the Love Boat or consume him in some sort of mating act as a tragic irony and either way he wouldn't be a factor in further chapters. But really, what do we know about what Lyn would find attractive or what her needs are? Wouldn't it be grand if the plot twist of the chapter is that Lyn decides to have an affair with him? I hope Tom won't take that approach; it would feel like rewarding the ship for causing (or helping to cause - the Seraph robots played a large role in it) all this trouble.

A scary thought: people here have been speculating that those buildings on the ship-creature's back are the nightmare city that Annie, Jack, Jenny, Winsbury, Janet, and the rest of the students are trapped in, and that they're really on the creature speaking to Kat. If so, what happens to them once Kat starts to seriously reshape that creature beyond (inadvertently) giving it human-like arms and hands?
That's assuming that the theory is true, of course (which, if so, also raises the question of what Kat and Paz are standing on - is the ship in two places at once, and now inside itself?) - what we see talking to her might be some smaller image of whatever the ship's become, created for the purpose of talking to Kat, that simply reflects on a smaller scale their surroundings. But even then, Kat's reshaping that image of the ship could reshape the ship around her and Paz as well, and - .
Maybe I shouldn't think over this any more. Everything involving Zimmy's world seems certain to make you fail a Sanity check, especially if you try to figure it out.

A sudden thought: What music was being played before the Seraphs' entrance? Could it have been Billy Idol's 'Flesh for Fantasy'?

It took me a little while to realize, but Paz is totally not used to dealing with all the weird stuff that constitutes a normal Monday for Kat and Annie. They've kinda built up to it slowly, but Paz is being thrown right in the deep end here. I wonder if it's going to put any strain on her relationship with Kat.
There's a ton of stuffyou can do with a giant hand, Kat. Some of it might even be socially acceptable!

But really, what do we know about what Lyn would find attractive or what her needs are? Or if etheric crabs are monogamous. As far as we know, when Love Boat and Bub meet, they may do a claw-bump. Thus starting the most disturbing side-story ever - a crustacean reverse-harem adventure. What would its name be? "Lyndsey Muyo"? "Love Adrift"? "You Have Crabs"? Can you imagine the fan service? *shudder*

Kat hasn't had nearly as much exposure as Annie though, from what I can remember. She's never even been to Zimmingham, she didn't come along when Zimmy went into Annie's dream, she hasn't been with Annie to the forest and spent time with Coyote and Ysengrin, she didn't see Jeanne. Annie's told her about things, but all I can think that she's really done is meet Basil, see Aly turn into a bird, and visit a very boring version of RoTD.

I wonder if it's going to put any strain on her relationship with Kat. I've been wondering about that as well. Paz certainly did not sign up for this. Let's see how this unfolds. There is a lot of holding hands up in ominous magic-casting poses in this chapter: I do not have a problem with that.

The ship-whale entity that is the ship AI is going to look even more hideous with purple veiny skin that is covered with blisters that look like they might contain some sort of diseased ooze.

What do you mean? Those hands are not connected to the ship. I'm also wondering what daedalus means there. I assumed that the hands would soon be incorporated into the Ship's new body. Which is funny, because if we continue in this direction, the template from which its body is constructed will be Kat, the goddess of the robots. Hence, at this moment the robots are being 'made' in the image of their goddess. I just thought that was interesting (shrug)

What do you mean? Those hands are not connected to the ship. It seems like they will be shortly, no? Ah, I think what he's saying is that instead of Kat using these kands to sculpt a body for the ship, the hands will be part of the body that she ship will be. Is that right, daedalus? If that theory is correct, though, we'll end up with some sort of weird, whale-headed, armed beast in the sea. Will it have legs? Will it stand or swim, or both? What will happen to all of the current passengers? I'm picturing some weird freakish Titan of some sort -- like Oceanus perhaps, but with a whale's head (given the skull we see now.) That would fit; we've already seen Basil, Muut, and Ysengrin. One more animal-headed, human-shaped creature wouldn't be too surprising!

Hm, how far in are we into the story? Are we only 1/5 way there? I mean I have no problems with that, certainly. Lots more GC to read! If that theory is correct, though, we'll end up with some sort of weird, whale-headed, armed beast in the sea. Will it have legs? Will it stand or swim, or both? What will happen to all of the current passengers? It doesn't necessarily become an arm whale. It is more probable that it acts like playdoh. But then, like playdoh, you still can make all those stuff anyway. Maybe it'll be shapable? Only Tom will tell.

What do you mean? Those hands are not connected to the ship. It seems like they will be shortly, no? Ah well, since the hands seem to be dissolving towards the ship in the second to last panel I assumed the "flesh" would shape itself more... "naturally" around the whale-like body.

What do you think the ship is "seeing" right now? Do things look as bizarre to it as to the kids? Do things always look like this to it? Furthermore, how did it even end up in the ether in the first place?? Aren't the Court's robots (at, least, the contemporary ones) supposed to be cold, lifeless machines, from an etheric standpoint? That's what I had concluded, partially due to Muut's "we do not deal in electronics" comment, and the fact that the Court looks colorless when Annie projects herself. So, if it's not just a normal robot, what is the ship??? Is it some poor creature that the court has mutated to its own ends; a sort of sick combination of the theory used on the "sterilized" bound dogs and the repurposed underwater dorms? Something that may have been noted before: due the heavy usage of eye symbolism in the comic, I can't help but find it significant that the ship doesn't appear to have any, and neither did Kat, when seen by Zimmy. Contrastingly, the Tic Tocs, which have been hypothesized by many readers to be an eventual result of Kat's sciencing, have been described as having "a thousand eyes". I'm not really sure what any of that means, but I thought I'd point it out! There is a lot of holding hands up in ominous magic-casting poses in this chapter: I do not have a problem with that. Haha, I noticed that similarity as well! My first thought was that Annie needs to show up soon and give Kat a crash course in "Intro to Being a Teenager with Weird and Unsettling Magic Powers".

I've been wondering about that as well. Paz certainly did not sign up for this. Depends on where Kat's responce will be on the scale from "shiny!" to "safety first", perhaps. Then again, Paz gave her that speech, so she can act as Kat's handler, if she's not too freaked out to remember this. There is a lot of holding hands up in ominous magic-casting poses in this chapter: I do not have a problem with that. Kat probably mockingly fit Annie's dramatic gesture on herself. My first thought was that Annie needs to show up soon and give Kat a crash course in "Intro to Being a Teenager with Weird and Unsettling Magic Powers". Annie does not know the difference all that well. But the first time Paz gave her a nice pep-talk, can as well do it again, this time on purpose.

You know what would be hilarious? If Kat says "sure, I can do that. Presto-Chango!" and transformed the ship into a camel. Or a bird. Or an orangutan. Or anything else that doesn't live in the ocean and/or can't swim.

the robots now always refer to Kat as "Creator" rather than "Angel", I wonder why? Quite strange.
