On the topic of potential Annie pairings and side characters we haven't seen in a while, let's not forget about Matt. The last time we heard from him, he was pining over some moon girl, mostly as a plot device to nudge Paz and Kat together. Since then, he's pretty much disappeared. 1 Maybe he went to an exchange program in China for a year or two. But it's still possible that he'll stroll in one of these fine days, tall and buff and sporting totally-not-ridiculous facial hair, saying, "Hey, ladies. Miss me?" And since he isn't likely to see Chang'e again, I'd say he's rather available. (Okay, yeah, probably not. I'll stick with Annie X Jack for the time being.) 1 I guess this does look like him in The Torn Sea. So apparently he's still around. As soon as I read this, I thought, "oh come on. we saw him with the rest of Annie's circle of friends in Chapter 57...didn't we?" Turns out we didn't. Now I'm wondering if he actually left on an exchange program or something like you said, or if something happened so he's just not friends with them anymore.

On the subject of other romantic relationships, I like a lot of the noncontroversial canon ships: Anja X Donald, Margo X John, William X Janet (if a little absurd, haha!), and Lindsey X Bud (mainly for the look on Annie's face). On a stranger note, while I don't think it's likely to happen, I definitely see some potential in Jack X Gamma. And last but not least, there's Mort X Betty--the tragically cute ship that never sailed.

I just had a though. So far it's not really possible/sensible to ship Annie with anyone, which is, I think, by Tom's design. So if she is to fall in love at some point it will probably be with a character not yet introduced.
Now, at the end of Jeanne's arc, some people were prognosticating the imminent ending of the story. And while I still think it's to early to see the end on the horizon, we are wrapping up some major threads and there are not many left.
And here is my idea: what if the story actually ends with Annie falling in love? Like, all mysteries are solved as far as possible, everyone is happy, the story is wrapping up. And on the last pages Annie notices a boy, and he notices her and smiles. She smiles back and blushes. End chapter. End story. And we are left to our own imaginations.
Haha, too trite?

Ever since "The Other Shore", with Annie's deal with the Guides, I've suspected that the most likely ending for Annie's story will be her becoming one of the Guides - an apotheosis. (Which could solve the problem of the cycle that's plagued her family tree all the way back to the initial union between the human and fire elemental - Annie, instead of bearing a child who'll receive her life force while she falls ill and burns out, like Surma and those before her, becomes one of the Guides, thus breaking the cycle.) Which most likely means, no boy-friend or falling in love. (I always found it difficult to imagine Annie seriously in love - though some of the other things she's done in the comic, such as going wild after that summer she spent in the forest, I also hadn't imagined before she did them.)
