Is there any sort of on or off-site IRC or other sort of instant messaging chat for the forums? And if not, why can't one be set up? It'd be awesome and easier to be able to talk in real time and not have to resort to using PMs or the like. WE NOW HAVE A CHAT: webchat.quakenet.org/?channels=gunnerkrigg

I think I saw someone mention one once, wow, I haven't used mIRC in years...

Once upon a time....the thing died. Some form of live chat that works and doesn't auto-kick every twenty minutes would be nice to have.

Jeez, that is ancient. I wish we had like a chatbox integrated into the site. I know some forums use that.

Personally I'll put in a vote for a good ol' IRC channel, so it's not restricted to the forums. Plenty of readers out there that I'm guessing aren't going to want to set up an account just for a thing like this. A shoutbox hooked up to one would be awesome though, providing it's written well enough to handle shaky connections and whatnot. I think there's a few that can even use forum accounts, but I'm pretty sure they wouldn't work with Proboards. Can Proboards be modded, anyway? I was under the impression that it's some sort of pre-made, ready-to-use forum designed for the masses that maybe lets you change the theme and that's pretty much it.

I am pretty sure it can. I moderate for three boards, two Invisionfree and one Proboard like this one. They do have chatboxes, but it's not really the same as IRC, it's more like a guestbook. You have to keep refreshing to get new messages to appear, which is annoying. I've seen other boards with IRC built in, but I've never run it myself and know almost nothing about it. Usually the limit of my worries is skins, permission masks and applying the ban hammer.

Should we keep using the new channel or should I set up a new one, run on the powerful elixir of LIQUID SCHWARTZ a new thread?

I wonder if there are any bookmarklets that would set up a little floating minimisable irc chat window within any browser window so that you could click it while you're on here to connect to the channel and use it simultaneously with forum

Not that I've looked much, but I've never seen an irc client entirely in javascript before, and especially not one small enough to be fitted into a bookmarklet (unless it loaded from a url or something?) Then there's all the joins and quits..I dunno most of the technicalities of how irc works but I'm not sure how likely it is :/ There's browser addons though..Firefox has Chatzilla, I don't use Chrom* but CIRC seems to be the most popular, for IE good luck have fun (does that thing even have addons besides bloatware and toolbars ), and Opera pre-v15 has a client built-in. (OT but it's kind of sad Opera basically killed themselves with 15.. 12.15 did so much stuff right, and that's coming from a die-hard fx user) And then there's sites like Mibbit where you just have it run in a browser tab. Probably the simplest way to do it. Personally I just use a desktop client so its connection doesn't depend on the browser not closing/restarting/whatever (not that it doesn't die every half-hour anyways..stupid wifi). Also it kinda meshes with the system better, especially with a good dockbar (and in Windows too, highlights should make the icon do the yellow blinking thing and there might be notifications, depending on the program?) (Macs I have no idea, never used them outside of one class) (← uses Hexchat)

What about Kiwi IRC, specifically this?

Ooh should look into Kiwi tomorrow! Would google hangout or plus community work for people? Another alternative which I am personally fond of but requires signing up to a new account is patter for app.net - patter-app.net/App.net has three tiers of membership- free (where you can have up to 40 'followers'- mostly relevant for alpha.app.net which is a bit like twitter, but is a 'proof of concept' for the platform), paid ($36/year I think, unlimited followers etc), dev ($100/year, create unlimited apps). Patter is quite a lot like IRC, but I like the interface better and it saves the history so you can just pop in and see what's been said whenever you feel like.

Well, I know a simple crude way to chat. Someone make a google docs and invite everyone onto it. Would put probably cause a lot of complications though, so I'm just throwing it out there.

There is at least one other G+ community for Gunnerkrigg, but those people don't seem to be aware of the forums, or be very active.

Also, as a relatively new user of online forums, what are IM chats usually used for?

Also, as a relatively new user of online forums, what are IM chats usually used for? In the context of this site, it's just an easier way for us to talk to each other instead of the inconvenience of just sending everyone PMs.

Why don't we create a channel on IRC and see how it goes? Make mods and stuff for if it actually takes off.

The old one is: irc.villageirc.net with channel #gunnerkrigg Does it always autokick after 20min? Do all IRC channels do that? (I didn't think they did unless configured that way?) Just for an option here is a channel on EFNet: chat.efnet.org/?channels=gunnerkrigg&uio=d4 (webchat interface) or any of the following with channel #gunnerkrigg efnet.cs.hut.fi efnet.multiplay.co.uk efnet.port80.se efnet.portlane.se efnet.xs4all.nl irc.ac.za irc.du.se irc.efnet.fr irc.efnet.pl irc.homelien.no irc.inet.tele.dk irc.inter.net.il irc.swepipe.se irc.underworld.no irc.arcti.ca irc.choopa.net irc.colosolutions.net irc.eversible.com irc.mzima.net irc.paraphysics.net irc.Prison.NET irc.servercentral.net irc.SHOUTcast.com irc.teksavvy.ca irc.umich.edu

If someone can find me an actually nice IRC client I'm also definitely in Hexchat. Multiplatform, 100% free. Works pretty well for me The old one is: irc.villageirc.net with channel #gunnerkrigg Does it always autokick after 20min? Do all IRC channels do that? (I didn't think they did unless configured that way?) Just for an option here is a channel on EFNet: chat.efnet.org/?channels=gunnerkrigg&uio=d4 (webchat interface) or any of the following with channel #gunnerkrigg [EFNet server list] The 20 min autokick definitely isn't normal. I'm guessing it's a shaky server or something, unless it's configured to do that for some odd reason. * Gotolei commences idler modeEdit: looks like it auto-ops the first person to join if nobody's on, and judging by what happened to the World of Text that's not a good thing. Usually this is solved by having a bot or something always in the channel..is anybody be able to do that? Edit2: or invite-only mode, that might work too. Edit3: or a server with services, like Quakenet or something, so there's a built-in protection method?

Just so everyone's aware, we've set up an IRC on efnet. Just put "#gunnerkrigg" in the channel section of the login, put in your nickname, and log in. Join the fun!
