I can confirm that the IRC is still awesome, though it would be a little easier to maintain its vitality if we tried to schedule something regular, rather than just hoping people spread across the globe will happen to be on at the same time. We tried something like that with the roleplays, and never had very much success. I suppose maybe it's worth trying again, though.

(rolls eyes) It would have worked great had we larger groups of people interested in the RPs.

There are a fair number of people on the IRC right now if you are looking for a page 1589 trauma support group.

Is it just me, or did the IRC just die?

As much as the channel still exists, it's been slowly dying as time goes on. At this point it's just KMar and I, with fwip and destyn popping in and out (and very occasionally one or two other people) with little to no talk. Not sure if it's because IRC is an old thing (™) or not, but in any case, let's see how this goes: (Still unofficial) Gunnerkrigg Court Discord ServerDiscord is a chat platform primarily aimed at gamers, but it works great for simple talking as well. It's been getting steadily more and more popular over the past year or so. Completely free, doesn't need email or anything, just set a username and you're good to go. Works just fine in browser, and if you set up an account there's apps for android, apple and desktop (win7 +/osx10.11+/linux). Paranatural, xkcd, Ava's Demon, Cucumber Quest... quite a few webcomics have servers, so I figured I'd take this for a test run.

We can certainly try it if it proves more popular than IRC. It certainly is looks more cool than the webchat. (by the way, xkcd also has vibrant IRC community, too, if one knows to look for it.)
I'd wager the primary reason is a lack of critical mass of users needed to sustain an active discussion, however, not the looks of client software.

Less about the looks, more about the functionality. One of the things I'm guessing it is is that out of the box, irc has no backlog when you join in. It's easy to pop in to a place for a few minutes and think the place is dead if other people happen to be offline, and then leave and never come back. As we've seen, a lot of people seen to confuse the I for 'instant' instead of 'internet.' But with a platform like this it's possible to see what other people have been saying and that they've been around, even if currently offline. (also xkcd's demographic is very likely to gravitate towards irc, heh)

Are you seeing any participation differences between the IRC and Discord?

I really should visit the IRC more often. Fun conversations are had there, doubly so when there are multiple people, triply so when there are roleplays. But my participation there and here on the forum has waned as my engineering classes have gotten ever more ridiculous. I'm sorry to disappoint all of my many fans
