Perhaps Surma was given one of Coyote's "imperfect gifts"? (Ref- www.gunnerkrigg.com/archive_page.php?comicID=498 )I suspected as much may be the case. Everyone loved Surma so much, including Coyote. Why wouldn't he give her a "gift" like that?

i think it's been established that coyote has not given her a gift via formspring, but i don't remember and tom's formspring is down.
anyway.
i find it interesting that coyote suddenly goes serious when annie asks why her mother died. i'm not sure if he's simply offended that she'd think he wouldn't know about it, if he's trying to come up with the most cutting coyote answer (a la "you're not even huuuman :DDDD"), or if there's something else there.

People with long red prehensile hair do tend to be Inhuman. Nice. I was out celebrating when I remembered to check. My friend and I promptly had a freak out in public over that last panel. Wow.

I'm glad we're getting to see Coyote being a huge dick. I think people like him too much. Right now we see the opposite: Coyote mildly shocked that no one cared to tell Annie at least who and what she is. If anything, this time he looks the least dickish of all in-the-know (unless they assumed the same). "Not exactly human" as in halfbreed? Anthony looked a bit like one of Those Little Grey Men, but i somehow suspect it wasn't about him. Did Rey attack Annie because, for a moment in his pain and grief, he did blame her for Surma's death? That "INYOURFACE"? Because after he stepped on her sore spot she stepped on his sore spot and jumped on it? His eyes are turning strangely green... I think I should stop before he turns into something terrible. (nodding) If his eyes go up again green, it's a good reason to suspect he turns into something truly terrible, indeed. No, I'm not saying I think time travel is involved here! Just a similar concept with the shared-soul thing. Time-traveling transgendered clones were mentioned, if my memory dudn't fail CRC check. Maybe Annie is... A ROBOT. (or a cyborg if you want to be specific) Not. Again. Is he trying to recruit her, and turn her against Jones? Maybe not "against", but definitely "from". Starting about the moment Jones appeared. Maybe the etheric form is how one sees oneself. Or just because it's how she really looks (not a disguise) and it's enough? On the bright side, if Annie is a phoenix, Kat will be happy. ;D Damn... how i forgot this? ;D Does anyone else think Coyote's wording is interesting? Then again, this whole "discussion" is made of such uncertainty. i find it interesting that coyote suddenly goes serious when annie asks why her mother died. He did the previous two times too. Judging by the phrasing, probably because human mortality is one of the biggest things that steal fun from him.

I'm just so eager to see what will happen next all the time with this comic lately. Tom keeps throwing us some great info week after week. I was so surprised, I did not expect that at all. I know. I'm used to watching Lost and in every episode of that you got more questions than answers.

Coyote is a "Magnificent Bastard". Even when he's being a dick, you can't help but like him. This is true.

This probably counts as a WMG, but what if it's Anthony who's not human? There is zero evidence to support it, but it'd be a kind of "What the heck... Awesome!" kind of twist. Of course, I like Tony, so.
Now that I've gotten some sleep, it really does seem to me that Coyote's having the time of his life. He's being so dramatic. I can just imagine in human form he'd--*fanart inspiration moment.*
And Jones looks like she's seen all of his funny antics before and is vaguely, boredly amused. Hmm...
Darnit I missed the Ustream...

this is awesome wrapped in awesome with a side dish of awesome!!
panel 5 looks clearly like a taunt, as in "oh, you thought you were so clever hiding things from this kids and now she gets to hear it from me..., yeahh, i don't think thats what you wanted to happen"
nnnnnnnnnnow panel 4 is an enigma wrapped in a mystery wrapped in awesome wrapped in creepy, the first non laughing coyote was clearly out of surprise, the second non laughing coyote was out of annoyance, this one he does seem preety mad, i mean, mad that the court didn't tell her this stuff, he looks honestly surprised by that.
so yeah, i don't see any dickery at all here..., as much as i dislike coyote it looks like his day was sort of "lets walk through the forest and read the paper, oh, so firehead girls is here? WHAT? wandering eye? you're making threats now? wanna take her against her will?..., this girl is giving me old news..,. do you want news? i have some news for you...., wait, what? you've never even been told about THAT? i'm supposed to be te trickster!! it's MY job to mess with people!!! are you trying to steal my job you pityful humans?!?!?!!?"
if anything it looks as if he's the one being played, hes giving all sorts of information, being preety straight forward, revealing secrets he had kept from Ys [that i doubt that's a minor part of the plot],
yeah, i'm sure the mistake jones was referring to wasn't annie giving away too much information, was receiving too much information.
[also, branches with no leafs..., is the king naked?]

I think this moment proves that she's not a phoenix. If she was (and coyote thought she knew about her origin), why wouldn't he have let that slip? Wouldn't he have said "there are many students who originated from the forest, just like you"? it doesn't seem natural not to say anything about her being a phoenix since he was already on the subject...

Is Coyote nuzzling Jones? Come to think of it, didn't Tom say that Coyote had a child. Could that mean Jones and Coyote were... Wow. Maybe there is something to that 'opposites attract' theory to a relationship. dante Shouldn't the phrase be 'also not a robot'?

Is Coyote nuzzling Jones? Come to think of it, didn't Tom say that Coyote had a child. Could that mean Jones and Coyote were... It could be a more paternal thing. Coyote's creations are the Glass Eyed Men, so could Jones possibly be the Eye that went wandering? (i.e. out of the forest, gaining a ROBOT BODY!!! along the way xD). This would explain a lot - she isn't technically a robot (hence the t-shirt); her robotic exoskeleton has poor facial expressions (explaining the general lack of visible emotion); and, having cut all ties to the forest, she is neither of court nor forest! I'm starting to digress into wild speculation now, so I'd better stop. I think this moment proves that she's not a phoenix. If she was (and coyote thought she knew about her origin), why wouldn't he have let that slip? Hmm... I understood this page the other way 'round, and took it as support for the theory (or one similar). Coyote states that some humans stayed in the forest, and that many of the creatures there today are their descendants. On the other hand, he also says that there were creatures living in the court, and he doesn't say what happened to them. It's possible that Annie and Surma are descended from one such creature that stayed in the court. Whether this is indeed a phoenix or something else entirely remains to be seen. Of course, I'm really looking to the next page, but Coyote probably won't even explain what he's talking about. Darn trickster! >:[

Maybe she is a glass eyed (wo?)man that came to the court. Hell, her humanoid body may not even be a robot in the common sense, maybe something more akin to the wooden arm from chapter 7 and the wooden dogs from chapter 22 (biological android? Wouldn't be too surprised if the court had the technology).

Actually, he's clearly having the time of his life being the one that gets to reveal everything to Annie. He's a dick, and he loves a good trick. This is one hell of a trick now that he knows no one else told Annie. He has to know how much it'll upset her by now. Best of all, he gets off totally blameless for it! It wasn't HIS place to tell Annie that sort of important information, and he had assumed she knew anyway. He'll be rolling around about this for weeks, I bet. Hey.. HEY! Maybe that was a reason why Surma was put in Chesterton at first? That makes sense. Apparently all of the students who were very recently non-human go into Foley (like Red), and if Gamma is anything to go by, Chester is where they put the ones who are "for all intents and purposes" human but are still decidedly weird. I imagine the descendant of a human who had once been a forest creature and who had passed along some very strange traits could fall into the latter category.

Also makes sense why they never put Annie into Chester. Even the other students have been overheard wondering why they didn't put her in there, "with all the other weirdos," or something to that effect. No, I don't remember the exact page number.
FIND IT YERSELF.
BAH.
LAZY KIDS.
Er, anyway. It would be a tipoff to Annie that something was wrong.. or that the adults thought something was wrong. Put her in a normal house and just act like nothing is up.
I just gotta wonder.. what was their long term plan for Annie? Did they REALLY think they could keep this from her for her whole life or what? [edit:] Did they hope she'd just never manifest her powers at all if she was kept from the weirdos? I don't think they thought this through very well.

Well, whatever Annie is, it's not something that puts the forest creatures at ease, although that of course doesn't rule out the possibility of a forest creature ancestor who is regarded as a traitor. If Surma was in Chester because she wasn't 100% human, that could raise some interesting questions about Kat's biology as well...

I think Ysengrin is implying that they're afraid of her because she comes from the Court, not because she isn't entirely human. Remember, Coyote made reference to the fact that all of the creatures of the forest liked Surma.
