Interesting. We've seen a number of non-human characters, but I think only one other that's "not exactly" human.

What confuses me is if she isn't human, why does she still look human in the aether? That's the only thing spoiling the phoenix theory for me really. That is a good point, as someone's etheric could be interpreted as their true selves, due to what we have seen in chapter 26 ( www.gunnerkrigg.com/archive_page.php?comicID=687). However, Annie is still mostly human from what Coyote is stating in the last panel. Etheric forms may also alter overtime, reflecting a person's changing nature. On another note, while I am hoping the phoenix theory is correct, I am also hoping it is completely wrong, as Tom has managed to be unpredictable with the plot at times (such as when we learned Annie had to guide her own mother to the afterlife, seen here www.gunnerkrigg.com/archive_page.php?comicID=532), and what he comes up with is better than anything we could imagine.

I've rarely posted... or maybe never, I don't remember, but I thought I'd throw in a guess about why they had to apparently share proximity while Surma still lived.
I figure it's part of whatever strange spirit-transference process took place, connecting them in a way that they couldn't move too far apart or risk both dying. Maybe.
Kind of like in the "War of the Ancients" trilogy, where a dragon travels back in time and instantly becomes sickly, and realizes it's because his past self exists at the same time, and their soul is being sort of split between them; if they stay close together, they stay healthy, but when they move far apart, they get very weak (until he goes back to his own timeline that is). No, I'm not saying I think time travel is involved here! Just a similar concept with the shared-soul thing.
But the most interesting part of this page is Coyote nuzzling Jones, and Jones not saying anything about it at all.
Well, see you all next year!

So, you're saying the phoenix theory makes so much sense it's probably impossible. Which is most likely true.

What I want to know is what's up with Coyote. He's cuddling up to Jonesy at the bottom of the page, but is that just him being dramatic? It seems to me in that panel, he's at his calmest; he almost looks like a regular dog leaning against her. That is, if he IS leaning against her--he might just be standing there shaking his head. Hard to tell.
Curse Tom for his amazing ability to tease us. <3

Not.... human? what But the most interesting part of this page is Coyote nuzzling Jones, and Jones not saying anything about it at all. That doesn't seem like unusual behavior at all for Jones. Or Coyote. Coyote loves to get up close and personal, and Jones is perpetually deadpan, so I don't see how this is out of character for either of them.

This must be the equivalent of Coyote's Best Day Ever. As I pointed out in the last thread, Coyote is being more Coyote than usual. Morphing all over the dang place like he is! I'm pretty sure he's having the best friggin day of his life.

What confuses me is if she isn't human, why does she still look human in the aether? That's the only thing spoiling the phoenix theory for me really. From the moment it was confirmed Annie drained her own mother, I knew this was a, "What is the definition of human?" situation. I just didn't know if the subject would actually come up in the comic. LET THE DEBATE BEGIN.

I'm glad we're getting to see Coyote being a huge dick. I think people like him too much. But that's why I like him.

I have the uneasy suspicion that Monday's page will have something like Coyote saying "Oops! I've said too much!" and disappearing with a grin.

Maybe Annie is... A ROBOT. (or a cyborg if you want to be specific)
Anyway, why is Coyote so eager to reveal stuff today??? Did he think that Annie was just ok w/ the court tricking Reynard in the first place, and didn't say anything? Is he trying to recruit her, and turn her against Jones?
This is probably as far as I'll ever go for "waiting for the Holidays to End"

Wow, this weekend is going to be long as hell. This is pretty damn big. But you know what would be even more amusing? If neither Anthony or Surma are human.
Still, I just hope Coyote spills the beans before Jones interrupts him or the chapter ends. Delicious goodies await us on Monday!

I too shall help stare! You have my eyes! And my sword...eye. Are you sure it wasn't knives?Still, I'm pretty blown away and cannot wait for the next page. karekano Not likely a robot. When Coyote first met and found out Annie was Surma's daughter he exclaimed "Eglamore you hound!" This implies some hounddoggery occured. Unless, Coyote terms the fabrication/cultivation of metalo-organic components in a nutrient bath as "hounddoggery". Figures, Tom has turned off his formspring page. "Taking a nap". He's a wily one, this Siddell character. wise to our internet ways.

What confuses me is if she isn't human, why does she still look human in the aether? That's the only thing spoiling the phoenix theory for me really. The only logical explanation is that Annie is not a phoenix, but her hair is. Annie's female ancestors are women able to enter a simbiotic relationship with a parasitic phoenix that nests in their hair and sucks their lifeforce in exchange for aetheric multipass. Or something. : ducks :

...not entirely human...
I cannot figure out why in all the years that I have been following this comic, that possiblity never occurred to me.
If I have to guess, I'd say she's part psychopomp.

Does anyone else think Coyote's wording is interesting? "Don't tell me no one has told the girl..." Maybe I'm reading too much into it but you could substitute "she's a hippopotamus" and he still technically wouldn't be lying...because as we all know Coyote never lies.
In any case, this was completely unexpected and I am eagerly awaiting Monday...as per usual.
