Name: Speedwell (honestly, I've gone by it online longer than my useless real name) Nicknames: Well... Speedwell, of course. From the plant, not the Watership Down rabbit, though I like him too and he is the most like me. Age: 48. Virgo. Fire Horse. Vrischika under Anuradha. Height: 5 feet 5 inches Weight: Feck off. Gender: I have a sex. Gender is for objects. I happen to be a woman and straight enough for quality control in a yardstick factory, but I have nothing against the innumberable variations. Vive la difference. Favorite Games (board games, card games or videogames): 1000 Blank White Cards; gin rummy Favorite Court character: Reynardine. (No idea why, honest. I think he's just the best and best-written character, and I kind of like the dude.) Jones. (Beautiful inside and out, and so innocent in her all-knowing way.) Kamlen. (Deserves a mention for being a pure-hearted, sane, good, mensch of a young man.) Favorite sport(s): Snarkery. Herding cats. Searching for pretty shells on the shore. Driving a stick shift (which I am learning to do this year). Favorite Podcast: Eh, I don't really listen to many of those. Favorite movie(s): Anything by Studio Ghibli. I just watched The Angel's Share and thought it was wonderful. The Game, the one from 1997. Favorite book(s): Oh bloody. I read everything. But I suppose my favorites are written by Mark Helprin and Dorothy Dunnett. Finally, tell us a little about yourself: I've been on the Internet since 1984 (before it really was what we think of as the Internet), back in the days of the 300-baud modem. I'm the Yank wife of an Irish citizen, currently resident in Sligo (hence the cockleshell sigil I use as my avatar). I used to work as an engineering software trainer in a multinational oil company and was laid off; I am now an engineering student looking for a job. I tutor writers and used to teach classical piano. I am trying to learn the low D Irish whistle and the bodhran. I am a Tarot enthusiast and unabashed atheist. I drink single malt whisky (and also whiskey, depending on where it's from). I relate unusually well to people with Asperger's (to whom I have to protest repeatedly that I am not one, myself). I would like to live in Aberdeen someday.

That's pretty much how I came to it as well. They were horrified that I hadn't discovered it yet - so they gave me a t-shirt, and a thumb drive with the first 10 episodes. Then I was horrified I hadn't discovered it sooner. Now if the live show would just tour Australia. Haha, I have no free time to see it. But I finally got around to watching Dr. Horrible's Sing Along Blog... in 2013. Heh, better late than never, I dare say.

Huh. Apparently I never got around to posting in this thread back when I initially joined in 2010, or when I came back around January this year. Well, time to remedy that. I'll follow the going style. Real Name: Mason Nicknames: Matoyak, Mace. Age: 24 Gender: Male Sex: Male Favorite Games: - Video: Rocksmith 2014, TOTAL WAR: Shogun 2, Perfect Dark 64, Half-Life 2, Persona 4: The Golden, BioShock. Among many others.
- Board: Settlers of Catan, Game of Thrones (In spite of my disliking both the show and the books), Risk Legacy
- Card: Derringer, Texas Hold 'Em
Location: Houston, Texas Favorite sport(s): To play: Tennis. To watch: Formula 1. Favorite book(s): Whew. Tough one. I mostly read genre fiction, so I'm mostly going to be naming series here. Anything and everything by Brandon Sanderson, especially Mistborn. Outside of Sanderson, the first half of the Wheel of Time series. The Dresden Files. Anything from Pratchett. The Justice Keepers Saga by R. S. Penney.*, The Powder Mage Trilogy by Brian McClellan. 1984 and Fahrenheit 451. A bit 'bout m'self: In school part-time for Game and Simulation Programming. Started as an Aerospace Engineering major, changed because I needed something with more ... art or creativity in it. I enjoyed some of the subjects and what seemed like the end goal would be, but not the moment-by-moment projects. More the idea of being an engineer than the actual doing it. Much happier (and more productive!) with programming and even more so with game design. I play guitar, though not all that well. Was in a garage band back in high school that did alright, but I put aside the guitar for a few years when getting my life back in order after a bout with depression before changing my major in 2011 ("Major Depressive Disorder: Moderate" and "Seasonal Affective Disorder. Odd, that one, for a Texan."). Picking it up again over the past month has been great. *Full disclosure: I'm a personal friend of his and did the revised cover art for the first book, and am planned to be the one to do the other covers in the series.[/ul]

Favorite Games (board games, card games or videogames): ...Civ V... Hit me up for a multiplayer game sometime, you can try a game with our playgroup. Have you tried Portal? Always wanted to learn to play, never got around to it. Bah. Favorite book(s): If I made a list it'd be heavily populated by the works of Kurt Vonnegut, China Mieville, Douglas Adams, Italo Calvino, Mervyn Peake, Neil Gaiman, Terry Pratchett (still mourning), Thomas Ligotti, Chuck Palahniuk, H.P. Lovecraft and Douglas Hofstadter (nod of approval) Finally, tell us a little about yourself:Formerly of dear old London till my parents decided to move the family to the land of sunburn and disappointingly exaggerated threats* of the slithery/creepy crawly kind when I was 16. Am currently a couple of months into my second year of uni studying for a Bachelor of Science (probably eventually majoring in biology) - to what end I've yet to decide. I'm always trying to figure out how to squeeze a few more minutes reading time out of the day. I have a few hobbies, my current passion being trying to learn how to take good pictures. I have a pet snake called Alastair Crawley, even though snakes more slither than crawl. *I've yet to be killed once by a spider or snake. Which land of sunburn and threats of the reptilian kind is this? I'm from Arizona (though I don't live there anymore), so I'm always curious to meet another desert-dweller. Also, that is the best name for a snake. The very best. Anything and everything by Brandon Sanderson, especially Mistborn. Is it better than Name of the Wind? I've read that (and the sequel) and loved it.

Anything and everything by Brandon Sanderson, especially Mistborn. Is it better than Name of the Wind? I've read that (and the sequel) and loved it. They're different beasts. Kind of like comparing, say, Babylon 5 with... well, not Star Trek DS9, but say Star Trek: TNG. Similar genre, but different in nearly every other aspect. I personally prefer Mistborn, but also quite love Patrick Rothfuss' series. I suspect you'd prefer the Kingkiller Chronicles over Mistborn, but I'd still recommend giving the series a shot, with the understanding that it was Sanderson's only second published novel so at times the writing can be a little rough [he grows out of that quickly]. (Patrick Rothfuss is the exception in that matter, not the rule, especially in genre fiction). Nobody builds worlds and magic systems like Sanderson, and you'll see that manifested in Mistborn and the rest of the Cosmere novels*. (Sanderson is to those as Tolkien is to language and lore). *Don't worry about the Cosmere until you've read a series or two of Sanderson's. You'll see why.

I'm going to be moving to the Tempe area in the Summer (in order to attend ASU's law school), do you have any recommendations for new residents? I'd imagine I'm going to see a lot less precipitation compared to my home environs (the D.C. metro area).

Greetings all fellow new initiates to the forums! Favorite Games (board games, card games or videogames): ...Civ V... Hit me up for a multiplayer game sometime, you can try a game with our playgroup. Have you tried Portal? I have, love it as well. I'm terrible at making favs lists. And I may just do that when I have some more free time. I don't claim to be especially good at it, but I find it a most satisfying game to play. It manages to be both deceptively simple, and deceptively hard. Australia, though I've spent most of my time here in Sydney, which is one Australia's less arid areas. In fact it's been terribly humid till recently, which makes me a bit sad. If I must have heat I'd much prefer a dry desert-heat then wet humid-heat (thank goodness I'm not living in Brisbane). And thanks, I was quite proud of it myself.

I actually like the Stormlight Archive over Mistborn. Shortest feeling 1000 page books I've ever read. (I got to the end of the first book and thought That's it? It's over? Nooooo. Same with the second) But a fast intro to his style is (if you don't mind these) a YA book, The Rithmatist. (Or Steelheart, but I actually could not finish that one)

(Or Steelheart, but I actually could not finish that one) I really like Stormlight Archive (Quite possibly more than Mistborn) as well, but I don't feel it's a good place to start people off with Sanderson, especially considering how much it is a Cosmere series and how much effect the Cosmere has on it*. The Rithmatist might be, if one enjoys YA, but that's never a guarantee. So I tend to go with Mistborn. (And I quite enjoy the Reckoners series myself, but I'm just a huge Sanderson fan. The only thing of his I haven't read and enjoyed were his Elementary-kid books,...and that's likely just 'cause I haven't read them). *Actual Stormlight Spoilers follow: What with Vasher and Nightblood showing up, Odium being the ultimate Big Bad, other characters from Mistborn, Elantris, and an as-yet-unwritten novel showing up searching for Hoid...among many other ties. Stormlight is a series I recommend tackling last in the Sanderson list.

Oh sure, but I read them before I had any idea about the whole Cosmere thing. Still liked 'em. (The Alcatraz books are goofy fun, especially if you've read other YA books, since he name checks various authors.) As far as spoiler "What with Vasher and Nightblood showing up" Um, who? And who showed up from Mistborn? Must be time to read them again.

(The Alcatraz books are goofy fun, especially if you've read other YA books, since he name checks various authors.) As far as spoiler "What with Vasher and Nightblood showing up" Um, who? And who showed up from Mistborn? Must be time to read them again. Alcatraz books are targeted at a younger than YA audience, and I just haven't yet bothered picking them up. More Stormlight and Cosmere spoilers: Vasher and Nightblood are from Warbreaker, Nightblood being the sword given to Szeth at the end of Words of Radiance. Vasher goes by Zahel (The swordmaster Ardent who always uses color metaphors) while on Roshar. During one of the interludes of Way of Kings three men (Grump/Temoo, Blunt/Vao, and Thinker) visit Roshar in the Purelake searching for Hoid. Grump is Galladon from Elantris, Thinker is Demoux from Mistborn (The captain of Kelsier's rebellion and later general under Elend). Blunt/Vao is from a book that hasn't yet been published. If you're unaware of the Cosmere, here's a primer: The novels, novellas, and series that take place in the Cosmere are Elantris (and its eventual sequel), Mistborn (All three trilogies* and the Wax interquel trilogy/quadrology thing), The Stormlight Archive, Warbreaker (and its sequel), White Sand, Shadows for Silence in the Forests of Hell, The Silence Divine, Sixth of the Dusk, The Emperor's Soul, and the Dragonsteel Series (Hoid's story). The Cosmere itself is the universe these works take place in. ... actually, it'll be easier just linking to the Coppermind. * Mistborn is (or was originally) a trilogy of trilogies. The first being the Final Empire setting you're familiar with, the second being set during 1980s equivalent, and the third being set in the future with spaceflight powered by the Mistborn magic system. Then he added the Wild West ( Alloy of Law) trilogy (maybe quadrology now) to fit in between the first and second trilogies. And all that are JUST the Cosmere novels. His YA (Reckoners, Legion series, Rithmatist series), and Elementary-Grade (Alcatraz) stuff doesn't fall into that, nor do a large number of his novellas and short stories. The man is nothing if not prolific and ambitious in his plans. The point is that while you definitely CAN enjoy the Stormlight Archive without knowing the Cosmere stuff, the "HOLY SHIT" moment of Szeth getting Nightblade and just what that means for everyone involved**, plus the Cosmere as a whole... It really adds to the moment. ** Nightblood is REALLY freaking dangerous. In the hands of Szeth that is terrifying.

When I joined this forum I went straight for the discussions and forgot to actually introduce myself here. So, Hello everyone!
Real name: Karl
Nickname: I've used various disposable ones over the years, here I go by one which is the result of a several-hour long consideration - "karl".
Age: 25
Height: 173 cm
Weight: 73 kg
Gender: Male
Favourite games: Board games: The one which is a race to the moon. That one which has snakes and ladders. Video games: Doom and its mods, old C&C games (especially Tiberium Sun), Quake games (I played Quake 3 Arena online, casually, for quite the long time). Favourite sports: I don't really follow any of them. But I do run and exercise on regular basis. During winter I often go to the gym, in summer I prefer open-air stuff.
Favourite Court character: Ysengrin.
Favourite movies: I think the last movie I saw and liked was "Thank You For Smoking". Haven't really been watching movies in the last 7-8 years though.
Favourite books: All of them. Seriously I like reading a lot. My idea of the best friday evening - listen to some good music and read something good. I kinda steer clear of the fantasy genre, but everything else is a-ok with me (genre-wise). Bringing out exact favourites is difficult, but Hašek's "The Good Soldier Švejk" is definitely there (you can also expect me to quote the book at appropriate and inappropriate places), Heinrich Böll "The Clown", Asimovs Robots trilogy, Habitat trilogy and the short story collection "I Robot" (hate the movie though) are also there amongst many others. Also I've always liked reading textbooks starting from the moment I recieved my first textbook. Nowadays I mostly limit myself to stuff related my subjects but I plan to visit my Universitys library even after I've graduated (which is not that far away).
About myself: Well I am a engineering student (of the thermal kind) and I kind of like to keep to myself but I don't mind occasionally going out. Too often or too high-intensity stuff tires me out rather quickly though. I like music and reading and studying. 8 out of 10 people have told me that my cooking is "more-or-less edible" and no one ever has gotten digestion problems from my cooking. I also have quite the sweet-tooth, the best way to bribe me is to bring me sweets. Oh I also like theatre (also opera, operetta) and I dislike modernized versions of classical plays.

I previously posted in this thread five years ago, but I'm going to re-introduce myself and you can't stop me.
Real Name: [redacted]
Nicknames: I have many names, but the most relevant one to mention would probably be Yumi, as that's what I comment under for most web series I read.
Age: 20
Height: 5'8"
Weight: I don't know. Some?
Gender: Agender
Favorite Games (board games, card games or videogames): Settlers of Catan, Fluxx, and The Sims 3.
Favorite Court character: Kat, then Zimmy, Annie, Gamma, Rey, Mort
Favorite sport(s): Does frantically searching for my phone count
Favorite movie(s): I like the movies in the Marvel Cinematic Universe. I'm really not that into movies; I prefer TV shows. (My favorite show is Avatar: The Last Airbender; I am really not into that movie.)
Favorite book(s): The Harry Potter series, the Legend series by Marie Lu, Annie On My Mind by Nancy Garden, others that I cannot currently think of
Finally, tell us a little about yourself: I'm currently watching a Parks and Rec marathon. I really want a peanut butter banana smoothie right now. I'm a college undergrad getting a major in English with minors in Psychology and Teaching English to Speakers of Other Languages. I like video editing, frogs, and purple. I shaved my head back in September, but before that I would regularly dye my hair; I've been trying to look more "professional" by not dying it, but it's killing me.

It has suddenly occurred to me that I've never actually introduced myself. WELP, TIME TO FIX THAT CONUNDRUM!! Nicknames: In real life, none; on the internet, I'll go with either CalPal, CalPal_The_Great, or ANuttyDutchman Age: 22, 23 in July 2015 Height: ~ 5'9" Weight: ~ 155 - 165 lb Gender: Male Favorite Games (board games, card games or videogames): Crusader Kings 2 and Europa Universalis 4 (I have committed 900+ hours to those two games along), Mass Effect series (all-time favourite, no questions asked), Skyrim, Mount and Blade: Warband, and this fun little game called Kenshi. Also an aspiring D&D player (with one-time experience as a DM), played GURPS; would love to play funky board games like Settlers of Catan. Favorite Court character: Tied between Coyote and Katerina Favorite sport(s): Karate, if that counts (not much of a sports guy at all). Favorite movie(s): Picking a favourite movie is like picking a favourite band / song, for me: it does a complete disservice to all the other movies that are currently out there. Favorite book(s): Dune, LotR series (yet to read the third book... lost that ages ago!), Harry Potter, A Song of Ice and Fire (or Game of Thrones, for the less familiar)... might need to expand this list in the future. Finally, tell us a little about yourself: I work full time at a parts distribution centre; I completed my bachelors in Political Science with a minor in Public Administration; I consider myself a hobbyist brewer - in other words, I make my own beer; and I am currently saving money to pay off student loans, buy a new car and - hopefully - buy a new house!

- Card: Magic [don't play anymore but it was fun], Chez Geek [and all the expansions], Navel War [This is so fun - pizza boats XD ], Cards Against Humanity, Apples to Apples [because we can have fun with the kids] and various assortments of cards I picked up or inherited from those who "matured"
- Toys: LEGO, Master Grade Models [no time any more], Miniature painting [no time or patience anymore]
Location: Somewhere just outside Toronto Favorite sport(s): Biking, Hiking, Fishing, Canoeing though do like to watch the occasional football game [soccer to the 'mericans] Favorite book(s): I have pretty much misspent my youth reading every scifi and fantasy book that was in print at the time. Some really good, a lot mediocre, and some really bad yet "award winning". In person I find Ed Greenwood a passionate writer and just ahead of Cook and Hickman. I also have been known to Binge read Manga series at times. A bit 'bout m'self: Long out of school and did a stint as a night school college instructor. Completed diplomas and degrees in Physics, Electronics, Quality Assurance and Metrology. I have worked in small scale publishing, light manufacturing in the toy industry, Metrology in the pharmaceutical and aerospace industries and now find myself doing contract Engineering and validation services. If something is listed as being part of the geek culture then I have a basic knowledge of the subject are participated at some point in my life or its so weird that even I havent touched it. When it comes to online sequential art, I am a cross between a bee and a butterfly. I am a diligent follower of anything I find interesting BUT will wander away for any variety of reasons, including extended down times or life-interuptus.

Hey folks, figure I should probably chime in here as well. Real Name: Chris/Christopher Nicknames: Online? I've been known to go by DonQuixote since I became a fan of Cervantes' book in high school. Age: 36 Height: 5'8" Weight: More than I'd like. Hoping to start losing a few pounds once the weather improves and I can start going on regular 2-6 mile hikes again. Gender: Male Favorite Games (board games, card games or videogames): ....variable depending on my mood. Some of the games I've played most recently have probably been Sunless Sea, Skyrim, The Long Dark, Civ5 Favorite Court character: Hmm, difficult choice... Of course I always like seeing Coyote's antics... Favorite sport(s): Not really a fan of team sports, sorry. I mean, my reaction to hearing a con I work is doing a baseball theme was "Hey, I wonder if I can make an 1899 Cleveland Spiders uniform..." (for those not from Cleveland, or not baseball fans: The 1899 Spiders were pretty much the worst team in the sport's history owing to the owners transferring away all the good players to "punish the city for low attendance") Favorite movie(s): Another difficult to pick category. In recent films? The Marvel Cinematic Universe has been pretty consistently good. Generally most of my viewing tends to fall into sci-fi/fantasy genre, with the occasional comedy or animation -- for current films, that is. Older films...I tend to gravitate towards mysteries (Basil Rathbone's performance as Holmes, for example) or horror (Universal's early monster movies; pretty much anything with Vincent Price, Peter Cushing, or Christopher Lee; etc.) Favorite book(s): With Pratchett's recent, and all too soon, departure, I'm left with three series that I follow regularly at present: Dresden Files (Jim Butcher), Mercedes Thompson (and Alpha & Omega spinoff; both by Patricia Briggs), and Kitty Norville (Carrie Vaughn). Definitely a fan of Neil Gaiman's American Gods, though. And, of course, Good Omens. Finally, tell us a little about yourself: Hmm... Masters in International Business, undergrad degrees in computer science and business. Spent some time working as a paralegal in a far too stressful environment. And these days I'm trying to get my own business going doing custom costumes and the occasional plush toy. Sometimes life leads us into unexpected directions. A friend has joked regarding my father and me, "Your dad bakes and you sew. Take that, gender stereotypes!" My most recently completed piece for myself is a 1939 Basil Rathbone "Hound of the Baskervilles" Inverness and deerstalker for myself (and already have an order to make one for a customer) and I'm now working on a Viking outfit. My most recently completed large project for a customer was a Jon Pertwee/Third Doctor style cloak; most recent small project was making someone a fleece deerstalker with their college logo on it; and I'm currently working on a Game of Thrones/Petyr Baelish robe set that the customer wants to wear to a mutual friend's wedding. (Yes, we've heard all the GoT/wedding/"are you sure that's a good idea?" jokes ) I'm a fan of steampunk, but most of my writing has been horror/urban fantasy (two short stories I was paid for; a number of novels I'm still working up the courage to someday submit somewhere). I've been on the Internet since around '98, and was on local BBS from probably '92 until the 'net started killing them off (yes, I remember the 1200 baud days...). I work four or five sci-fi/fantasy/gaming/whatever conventions a year, doing volunteer work in their art shows or as con security, which is how I started getting into costuming, since I'd make stuff to wear while working the events, and then a couple people started asking, "Hey, can we pay you to make that for us too?" Next con on my schedule is Marcon, which at 50 years old this May, can safely be said to be one of the older sci-fi cons out there.
