Let it be known that I too am a believer in the prophecy. As long as it's the mega-showdown one It is the mega-showdown one. How would we convert people to believe in it if we didn't promise a mega-showdown?

Cue Boxbot rule thread update in 3.. 2.. Something to do with this panel? Tom drew it, not our fault.

On a happier note I'm pretty pleased that Annie isn't big nosed bigot. Me too Kind of ironic, though, 'cause that was the main thing that both Reynardine and Kat seemed to be worried about.

Now that Annie's reaction is confirmed, what'll Kat do? She seems boxbotable surprised in the last panel.

How would we convert people to believe in it if we didn't promise a mega-showdown? Heck if I know. It'd be like taking Revelations out of the Bible. Yes it's insane and probably not canonical, but who cares? It's so damn METAL!

Tom got better at drawing profiles. We got better at predicting Tom. (Admittedly this time the answer wasn't "She's turning into a bird!")

Okay, so back to our bets about Annie's reaction, there were other alternatives proposed but they mean nothing now because this was amongst my 6 originals: 1. Annie is her "subtle" self and just tries to vanish "smoothly" to give them time together. Seems reasonable in the light of last time Kat had a crush on someone of her age. 2. Annie has grown into one mischievous teenager and goes to get Renard to celebrate/taunt. 3. Annie is suddenly upset about Kat not having told about her new relationship. This relatively likely option would probably have the most short-living consequences as it would just be solved with a laughter in a page soon to come. 4. Annie is "jealous" of Kat in the "best-friends" manner, running away as she suddenly feels she is no longer the closest person to Kat that she used to be as the best friend, because now Kat is dating someone, and that's even a girl so may feel like taking the best friend place as well.5. Annie is secretly in love with Kat and jealous. In light of the most recent events this no longer seems very likely, but she has a habit of wearing a mask, so this is at least a possibility. I really hope this is not true. A teenage love triangle drama just is not what I want to read about. Ugh, maybe it could have some interesting side effects in the main story line, I guess, but certainly am not enthusiastic about it. 6. Annie is homophobic and runs in disgust. I think this is very much an outside chance unlikely to occur, but had to list it as it could happen. So, if you called 4, please stand up!Well, thank you, can I have some cookies, for from the same post where I started booking bets, I can find this: Okay, the detail might appear a little wrong, but the main thing is, I called no 4, she is upset because Kat is distancing from her. Oh, by the way, this is also a part of the prophecy. Fantastic! Now, Annie's worry about Kat one day leaving her, that reminds us of the bind she seems to be putting on Kat. Shall we see Annie cutting Kat's arm later in this treatise? Also this: These changed a bit afterwards, though, but: cookies to Rymdljus and Basser as well! I think I get a cookie too...

You know, it is kind of satisfying to be able to predict with some accuracy...And of course, the next big prediction is going to come out to be something nobody even guessed, but still... Heh, just had a thought; this is the best place to be wrong on the internet! Also, Annie's face in the last panel is SO SAD! GAH!

At this point I'm thinking the huge showdown won't be Court vs. Forest so much as Anthony apologists vs. Anthony haters. (for the record I have my artillery spot all picked out)

Kat's taken the time to talk about things and try to understand where Annie's coming from, so I think she'll be able to convince Annie that it's possible to care for more than one person and she's not going to leave. Nah, just kidding - she'll build a SPACESHIP! An spaceship of friendship that's symbolically immobile!

Ah, one of those rare occasions where the sensible prediction IS the correct one. Weird! But also good! Because as much as I'd be all for a super girly love triangle, that would be kind of distracting amidst all the magicy and sciency things that are supposed to be happening. At this point I'm thinking the huge showdown won't be Court vs. Forest so much as Anthony apologists vs. Anthony haters. (for the record I have my artillery spot all picked out) Wow! Elaborate! I'm guessing it's by the laser cows. Not because it's defensible at all, but because there are laser cows.

Tom's expressions are the best. Also d'awww. D'awww. However, while Tom expressions are quite good, IMHO they are not the best - when Cassandra draws, it's "oooh, expressions!" on pretty much every page. At drawing body language Tom may be better, though. ...and still so deliciously ambiguous. Did Annie know? (I think so) What ambiguous? Whether she knew they are an item? Making big eyes after her last foot-in-the-mouth moment and "hello ladies" on the bonus page were not enough? Regardless, I still maintain that Tony is secretly awesome. You'll all see. Quite likely. He is secretly awesome only because he used "ability to communicate with [meta-]human beings" as a dump skill, however.

This is a sad page. Good to see Renard (and other people) were mistaken when suggesting Ann might be alittle bit of a bigot. I was figuring it would be something to do with fear of abandonment, but it wasn't really until I read Annie's comment in the last line that I really connected it to losing her parents. Note the phrasing, "you will one day leave me." She really does seem to take it as given that people she loves will leave her. ETA: Regarding Tony, she becomes quite angry when people insult him, and his disappearance has very definitely hurt her (see: the last time they visited this room). yes at first it seemed like a jealousy thing (IMO if Ann was feeling jealous it would be good for her) but now it looks like Ann has some abandonment issues which are perfectly justified. It all makes sense why she decided to run to the tree. Kat hopefully realized this awhile ago and knows the perfect thing to say. *insert Katimony ship fantasy quote here*

I don't know, was it supposed to be a last-panel surprise that Annie is concerned about being abandoned rather than "zomg kat is the gays"? I guess the somewhat clunky dialogue with Renard was attempting to misdirect, but I don't think it worked very well. The former is an interesting bit of characterization that to a strong degree builds off of what came before while the latter...doesn't. It was basically a question of this series proceeding as it has been or turning into a middle-school melodrama, a derailment too huge to seriously consider at this point. "You will one day leave me" instead of "You will leave me one day"? same meaning, but words in wrong order? That doesn't seem odd to me. I think it's just an alternate usage.

I, too, think that it would have been a bit out of the blue if she suddenly had got a panic disorder for seeing two girls kiss when nothing has shaken her before - and this even was Tom's original idea about Annie, that she is somehow undisturbed by whatever strange happens around her. Moreover, I still think she might not have been so ignorant of this relationship here. It really seems like she suspects something, at least. I think the next pages will tell us whether she did or not.

Will this be resolved so easily? I can kinda see Annie responding to Kat's efforts with "Well, you say that..." If she's really intensely convinced that everyone she cares about is destined to leave her completely, I'm not sure a few words from Kat will dispel these feelings right away. I feel like it's one of those depression/anxiety things where the only "fix" is Annie developing out of it on her own at some point in the future. It's not something you just talk somebody out of. I feel like the best we can expect from Annie in this scenario is a half-hearted "yeah I guess" after Kat tries to convince her that she's wrong. I'll be kinda amazed if Annie just gets over it here and now and it never comes up again.

Poor, vulnerable, broken little girl. Oh, Annie, friends don't disappear just because they fall in love.
On the topic of Anthony, his absence from Annie's life has been a major theme since very early in the comic. I think those speculating that he has a larger part to play in the future are probably correct.

Wait... what if the reason Tony disappeared is because he's trying to find a way to save Annie from Surma's fate? We've been discussing this before. I think it is very much possible. Clearly he is trying something about Antimony, and clearly he was always brokenhearted near her. But as it has been implied that he has been involved in some serious court manoeuvres and as he makes quite massive moves (come on, a satellite!), it is probable that there are also some court-related reasons. He will come to Annie's rescue in the end. And will, thus, be forced to take side against the Court.

This scene feels as though Tom is driving at some deeper emotional point than just a "yeah I guess," but I can't tell what it is yet. Kat will be able to say the right thing, I think, but I don't know what that thing is. I don't think Annie will ever truly "get over it"; losing your mom and having your dad abandon you is going to leave a lifelong mark. But I do think that there is going to be some deeper catharsis here; just no sure what yet. I'm betting it involves hugs though!

I do understand where Annie is coming from in this. It does seem a bit mature of her (right word?) if she is thinking "big picture" that Kat will one day leave, ie move away.
For example, I remember being in High School and when one of my buddies was the first to get a serious relationship, it was like he just vanished from our circle of friends. He was always spending time with her, sitting with her in class, at lunch, and didn't have time to do stuff with us after school anymore. He wasn't around. That's high school obsessive romance.
But when you are older, you have worries about losing contact with your friends forever. Some go off to college/Uni in a distant city, some get jobs, some get married. Once high school is over, a lot of people just disappear from your life, never to be seen again.

Trying my best I come up with a detailed post about the update. Trying to think of things that haven't been said. Sitting, contemplating. Nothing coming up.
"I-uh... At least she isn't homophobic!..."
God dammit you royally screwed it up. Everyone is going to see you as that awkward guy who just wanted attention.

I registered on these forums just to say that I really love Annie's body language on this page. ...actually, love might be the wrong word. It resonated with me. Seeing her shift her gaze and her position so much in the course of three panels brought to mind some awkward and painful conversations I had with friends and family members, about stuff that pained me... It seems like she's saying things that she'd prefer to keep silent about, just so she can pretend these thoughts and feelings and fears and horrible expectations didn't exist. The way she hugs her knees and looks away in the last panel as she explains her deepest fear just.... touches my feels and makes me write overwrought prose on internet forums :-v Man, no matter how long I read this comic, Tom never ceases to amaze me with his minute portrayals of humans. He brings his characters to life in ways few other artists can. ( The revised version of my first post (Hello Forums!) actually doesn't contain as much overwrought prose, but that is because I mercilessly extinguished its feeble tendrils as the first fire of my exalted passion ebbed and harsh, cruel reality once again bore down on the yoke of my feeble..... god damn it, I already used feeble! Gotta spend some more time with the ol' thesaurus, I guess )
