Well.
Ouch.
I don't know how either of them could reconcile after this... at least, not without a heckuva lot of soul-searching and talking it out.

I like how the background represents how Annie must be feeling. Nice work, Tom!

I'm half-expecting her to throw up in the next panel.
And I didn't expect to also be told why the Guides couldn't come for her. Tom, you are spoiling us!

Can't say I'm too surprised seeing how so many people called it. But the rest? How everyone knew it would happen, why the guides didn't come? Wow. We need to know more about what Surma had and how she caught it.

I'll bet Annie regrets her harsh words from the last two pages.
"Pride goeth before destruction, and a haughty spirit before a fall."

Maybe it just came with her talents. One cannot live with another living, or something of that nature.

And that's when Rey lost any moral high ground he could have taken over Annie's "she never loved you"... Well, now that they are both broken and miserable, I guess they can claim down... it's been quite the night

So, I'm curious, did they all know it would happen before she was conceived, in which case that would justify some of the anger toward Anthony, or did the realize this would happen after Annie's birth?

I think the real message that Tom is trying to send here is:
Cheating on your homework is wrong, and leads to an animated stuffed plushie telling you that you were the cause of your beloved mother's death.

Now the question is if this was something unique to Antimony or a repeating event each generation. I am currently leaning toward the latter since they "ALL knew it would happen."

Might it have happened with Surma's mother?

Wow. We need to know more about what Surma had and how she caught it. Sigh... Well, see, when a daddy loves a mommy... Also, WOW! Shocking revelation there! Why is Gunnerkrigg Court so made of awesome when stuff happens?

Who thinks that both of them will break down, blubbering into one another's arms before the chapter's up?

I find the toss of emotions in this chapter interesting. Clearly, it's been shown Renard was going to break the news to Annie a few times before, but it's tragically poetic for it to be done this way, I think.
Renard set out to try and get Annie to act like a young adult, but she didn't, and she wanted to justify herself in not listening to Renard, so she belittles him in the only way she knows how, by distancing him from her mother and making herself believe that he never cared about her and that he was just trying to fulfill a role in life that he wanted. Which is partly true, but he probably cares a lot about Annie too.
Renard seemed to hold back the best he could, but Annie just pushed him to break the news to her in the worse possible way, and break her heart. So now Annie has a lot of guilt to deal with, "we all knew" may make Annie believe as though everyone blames Surma's death on Annie, and if not Annie, and if there was some other malicious thing between Anthony and Surma involved, then everyone could blame it on him. Hence why he disappeared.
Considering I don't see Surma as being heartless enough to trap Renard in the court, I have to wonder what else isn't being said, and that there are many more dirty secrets that will come about because of this. :/ Because when asked on formspring about whether or not Surma actually cared about Renard the only answer was "remains to be seen," along with some other similar questions.
Honestly, I can only think that if Anthony really cared about Surma he wouldn't ditch her kid, THEIR kid, for two years. And since no one else has anything nice to say about him, it just makes you wonder. This kind of reminds me of Jeanne and Diego, and I'm starting to wonder if there's any similarities between Anthony and Surma.

Whoooo. And now the Burly Brawl is finished. I suppose the question now is... will Rey keep going on the attack, or will things start to simmer down?

Daaaaamn. I knew Reynardine was going to hit Annie with something, but no one expected this. Who thinks that both of them will break down, blubbering into one another's arms before the chapter's up? No one?

I'd assume they knew it would happen before. I do not think she was conceived when Rey last saw Surma... when he saw Annie at the court that's when Rey realized that Surma was dead. If Annie was already conceived/ born, the realization of Surma's death would be nothing new to him. Also it's probably the best way for Annie to salvage herself from this... If Surma knew she would die after giving birth to a child than that means that Surma loved Annie more than her own life; It's not that Annie killed her mother so that she could live, its that her mother sacrificed herself so that Annie could live.
