I agree. At this point Anthony is crossing Coyote twice at once. First, removing Annie as the forest medium, which will not please Coyote nor Ysengrim. And at the same time trying to take control of Renard. And it's not like the court has plausible deniability. He explicitly works for them now. Actually, I think Coyote is in a bit of a difficult position here. If Anthony claims his daughter is not competent to serve as medium and this news makes Coyote angry, then to anyone Anthony has convinced (remember, the court already denied her the job of court medium. They'd be leaning toward Anthony's assessment anyway), it will appear that Coyote is angry about not being able to manipulate her to do his bidding. So a better (and more appropriate) response from him would be to act delighted and amused by this revelation, and then declare that Ysengrin will get his old job back, knowing full well that this will piss off the court. But if the court is in agreement with Anthony, it's still a very weak bargaining chip, since I think they'd be willing to eat their losses with Ysengrin if it meant preventing a potential catastrophe with Annie. And on top of that, he can't really negotiate on behalf of Reynardine, since he is an agreed-upon prisoner of the court. All he can do there is issue a complaint, and even then there's no indication that being under Anthony's control would be worse for him. Anthony could even argue that it would be better. It's pretty much a dead end. As far as outwitting a trickster god goes, he could do worse. This sounds a lot like strategy. I don't do strategy. You're thinking way too hard on my behalf. Here's what I'm thinking: - This changes everything, but not in a ooooh-this-could-be-interesting! way.
- So I'm opposed to this, and displeased. A displeased Coyote is an angry Coyote.
- I spent lots of time finding a medium I can mess with. Not gonna give that up just ten chapters later.
But I'm still flattered that you think I'm subtle enough to submit one of your fancy-pantsy "complaints". |

My guess (just a guess and speculation, "Because Coyote, Who Knows") is that although he was willing - he says - to let Reynardine be trapped by The Court as a whole largely in the persons of people like Eglamore, Anja and Donald, he is NOT going to be willing to have Reynardine and the powers Reynardine holds used as a tool by Anthony for heaven knows what, including potentially an attack on The Forest in some way. No no no no, you have it all wrong!!! Silly human fools. I care nothing for the Forest, except as sycophants. Of course. But I AM entirely a creature of chaos. I love to keep things interesting, to roll the dice, as it were. It was fun to have my dear cousin trapped in the Court. It was fun to force him to be bound to a human he'd inevitable fall in love with - just look at his entertaining angst over his attack on his beloved Annie! But that game is over now, and I'm booooored. I didn't think it through well enough, as usual - with my dear cousin gone, there is no one who appreciates my wit left around. Ysengrin acts like Annie on this page: his suffering isn't the entertaining kind of suffering, and so I'm not interested in it! I need my fox back. So I've been working to steal my favorite cousin back from those silly bureaucrats across the river. But if our dear Mr. Carver gets his grubby hands on my cousin, that'll be no fun, since he'll be locked up forever! It's time for a new gambit, but I need Renard to not be locked away Coyote knows where. |

Who mercifully let them leave my domain when they so chose, to pursue their own desires in the Court? Even though they know that being mean to my subjects is my favorite leisure activity*? Certainly not a nigh-omnipotent being who made them all into Manchurian Candidates when he harvested their essences from their bodies. I'm preeeety certain they don't remember that.

That doesn't change the fact that they endangered Kat's entire class - and should be thankful that none of the students were killed or injured. More terrible Boxbot nonsense? Fact: Seraphs had situation under control, with syphons and tools to keep everyone safe. Fact: The reckless kids endangered themselves just as they endangered the ship and seraphs. Oh man, Coyote needs Black. Ultimately, everything he does is in his own interests only and solely. He has both Rakdos (chaotic, hedonistic, extremely independent, hierarchy hating) and Dimir (manipulating, scheming) qualities, besides his creativity. He mostly does things to guarantee his existence, his position of power and for his own amusement - for the laughs, really. I'd probably make him Grixis (and, funnily, he displays all of the colors on his body). Hes quite like Nicol Bolas, but with more of the Red showing. That old, stuffy dragon? Pah! Trying to get more power, for the sake of having more power. If he was leader of the Forest, he'd have wiped out the Court already with some etheric death wave, then he'd have no one to play with! To be "scheming" or "ambitious", as you say, one must plan ahead. I do everything because it amuses me in that moment, without any real long-term intent. Because thinking about consequences of my actions is hard. And boring. I don't believe that the ends justify the means, because I rarely even have ends at all. The lulz justify the means. Hedonism and chaos are great (but also both classically red). I don't need to try to amass more power bargaining with demons, or sucking the energy of worlds dry, or wearing chain-mail fashion accessories, because I'm already omnipotent. I'm so cocky with my power that I'm willing to give it away! I don't need any youth magic, because I'm a shapeshifter and also eternally sexy. I also don't stay in the background, or work to maintain my position of power. I more try to make sure that everyone knows how awesome I am, because otherwise I wouldn't have as much of a cult of personality. And without a cult of personality, no one would follow my orders! And that would be awful. |
