So simple! And yet so devious. I suppose we should have guessed that it might possibly be Jeanne given it's position opposite the gear (Tictoc), but I personally never twigged. Pretty sneaky, Tom I'm confused as to why she looks like a seed/eye, but I'll put it down to stylistic choice.

I'm referring to the white round thing above Annie's head.

Wait, I never really thought about it before, but why is Jeanne stuck on the Court side of the river? And why does that prevent the guides from getting to her? (what I mean is, if the guides can show up on the Court side of the waters out of the ravine, and on the forest side of the waters in the ravine, why on earth can't they just show up where Jeanne is?)

Not the thread for it, but I assumed that they can't reach her because of some problems with her, not with her location. I hope that people in the court do get psychopomps to visit them.

I believe that Muut meant "reach" more in the metaphysical sense.

Wait, I never really thought about it before, but why is Jeanne stuck on the Court side of the river? Presumably because the Court was where she lived and/or died. Recall that the only physical evidence of her existence--her portrait, in Diego's shrine dedicated to her memory--was found in the Court. EDIT: Although there is always room for other factors to be at work. Tom did say that Mort was not a Court student, and he's only haunting it because he was stationed there. Of course, Jeanne (like Martin from ch 16) hasn't crossed over yet; Mort strikes me as someone who did cross over, then crossed back for some reason.

So I was re-reading S1 after Tom did that drawing of Jeanne in a recent ustream and spotted that on page 410 the shape Shadow 2 takes on in panel 4 looks just like the shadow men in the video game Ico. I am surprised I never made the connection before, I love that game.

Damn, I knew he looked familiar in that panel, I could just never place exactly why...

On 338, Annie almost calls Anthony her dad, before correcting herself and saying father. Interesting little hint towards her relationship with him. Maybe he told her to call him father, not dad? www.gunnerkrigg.com/archive_page.php?comicID=338On the same page, panel 2, she nearly says 'mum' then corrects it to 'mother'. Read 'mom' if you are of a nationality that spells it that way. It's basically the same pronounciation.

Until today, I don't think I've ever realized how truly pissed of Janet looks on this page. I mean, I think her death stare is scaring Blondie there more than the collapsed roof and the sirens. Panel 4 is now possibly my all time favorite in the entire comic. Plus: When did Reynardine come out of the closet to Smits and Parley? And on the next page, in the sixth panel, "SLAM AGAIN"

wynne, what do you mean about Rey coming "out of the closet"?

I think wynne means when did they find out about Rey being in the wolf toy/under Annie's control. And to answer that, during the meeting with Coyote and Ysengrin, I believe.

Exactly! I mean, it's not every day you meet a possessed stuffed wolf.

In this case, it's more of a "coming out of the box".

that's a really cool catch. do you think it could have something to do with the humans who used to live on the other side? is it possible there's an old, overgrown mini-Court on the other side filled with all sorts of wild and fantastic plot devices? I'll stop here before I have to move into Wild Speculation , but that sure is interesting...

wynne, the chapter we first meet Parley and Smith (The Fangs of Summertime) is at the meeting between Coyote, Ysengrin and the Court staff. Reynardine was there too, so they have known about him at least as long as they have known Annie. See here : www.gunnerkrigg.com/archive_page.php?comicID=281They may have even been told about him before the meeting, as they already knew about Annie falling off the bridge.

No doubt a Dr. Danger reference! But didn't Tom also say the Court had it's own space program?

Is the symbol above Kat's head related to her, just like Antimony's alchemical symbol above hers?

Probably. The same symbol was on her jacket in the third treatise.

There probably ought to be a ladder somewhere that you would prop up and go to another level of the library. I guess somebody else is using it at that point. Seems pretty inefficient but the Court does have laser cows, so efficiency is probably sacrificed for oddness all the time there.

Well... the Court is where, throughout her first year, Annie had to climb up 30 floors up on a ladder every evening, and 30 floors down every morning... The Court loves irrationality in its architecture. :-)
