Poor Annie. I want to give her a hug.
I guess Kat was thinking the same thing most of us were. But, in hindsight, Annie already had so much experience with the psychopomps that her mother being taken by one of them might not have resulted in as much outward anger as she displays, even if it did stir resentment under the surface.
But this...I wouldn't expect many adults — much less a child — to handle such a task calmly.

I guess we should have seen this one coming. To mediate between 'pomps a medium would have to be neutral and belong to none of them. I bet it must be a tradition among mediums, to guide one's mentor.

So, now the question is, did they not come for Surma...?
...Or did they force Annie to perform that duty herself...?
...Or did they let Annie perform that duty herself?
...Not, mind, that at the time Young Annie would have realized they were doing her a favor, by their lights.
And the next question is, how far did Annie herself have to go to perform that duty?

Well, that IS a reason to be angry, I mean if no one really came and Surma told Annie to do that. Who could really lead to her mother to the afterlife and be okay after that?

Did you notice that you can see Surma's arm and the outline of her body in the lower right corner of the last panel? That just about doubled the emotional wallop of this page, for me.

Who could really lead to her mother to the afterlife and be okay after that? See, that's the thing: Annie knows there is an afterlife. She knows her Mom is there, waiting for her. She knows she will go there herself one day. Annie knows. And Shovel18, yes, I noticed...and again, Annie now knows that she was turning away from an empty husk, and that her Mom went somewhere. I have a worry that the Other Side was not all cotton candy clouds and unicorns....

That was a gut-punch. I am absolutely gobsmacked. One again, Tom completely subverts our expectations and delivers something NO ONE could've seen coming. That is grade A What-the-effin' hell material.
Kudos, man. I'm still absorbing it.

Great twist,it certainly shows why Annie harbored such hurt and anger.Performing such a task will never be easy on anyone...especially for a 11-12 year old.

The last time I felt like this was when Dumbledore died. I can almost hear the collective gasps from everyone who reads this comic all over the world.
This is without a doubt, the most shocking page Tom has delivered us.

It also might show why Annie has been so much more civil towards Ketrak than towards Muut. Ketrak doesn't come for humans, so he couldn't have been expected to show up for Surma.

......Wow. Okay, I was so sure Annie was just mad because one of the psychopomps took her mother. I am both shocked and impressed by this sudden subversion of expectations. This also makes me see Annie in a new light- we had no idea she had to go through something like this just before coming to the Court.

This mental scarring would tell us why Annie is so cold most of the time.

I have a pretty good theory: What if mediums are the only people who can escort other mediums into the afterlife? This means that the Guides are unable to do it themselves and why no one came for Surma as well as to why Annie had to escort Surma herself to the afterlife. Without another medium to carry them into the next life, they would be stuck in some sort of limbo like Jeanne.
Which brings me to another theory: What if Jeanne was a medium in her former life? Then, assuming she fell of the bridge to her demise, there was no other medium to escort her to the afterlife, rendering her trapped in the ravine. Since the other psychopomps can't escort her, they tried to get Annie, a medium, to help her.
I know I'm probably off on this but I'd still like to hear what you guys think.

Maybe Surma was very conflicted that she had to leave her daughter so young. So Annie had to "solve" the conundrum first, like she had to do with the fire boy in the hospital. I'd say that would mean Annie knows why Surma died, though I can't remember if something opposite to that has been said in the comic.
However, even at that, when Annie helped the fire boy, there were psychopomps there to take him afterwards. It's really strange that she could do the psychopomp's duty.
What the hell does this mean about Annie? Ugh my brain.

...Leaving the obvious emotional scarring this would cause aside, doesn't this mean that ANNIE is a psychopomp herself? I mean, if she does the job...

Man. I know Annie has had to learn how to be self-reliant but this is just flat out ridiculous. Damn. The full weight of the final panel is finally hitting me.

I have a pretty good theory: What if mediums are the only people who can escort other mediums into the afterlife? That's kinda what I was trying to say before, I don't think a medium can belong to the jurisdiction of any psychopomp and still be able to mediate disputes between them. We've seen them get touchy about who gets to guide random people before; presumably a medium would be more important than just plain folk. So, it'd make sense if mediums are supposed to guide their relations or mentors when the time comes. If it's not a tradition in the GC universe it should be. (edit) I don't mean they should guide all their relatives, just those who are mediums and therefore don't belong to psychopomps. Since it runs in families the person who trained a medium would normally be an older relative.(/edit) Dunno if your theory about Jeanne being a medium is right or not but it could be true since she died on forbidden ground. It seems that to guide someone you have to go to where they're haunting.
