Why do I get the feeling this is the last we see of Kat, as such? No, it'd be too dark if she were lost forever. Kat is a kid and the story's second protagonist. But we are heading into a pretty glum and bumpy road, that's for sure. |

On reflection, I think the most interesting thing about this page is Kat's word choice. She says "when it's installed" instead of "implanted" or something similar.

At this point, the 'kid' is 16-17, and we have had premonitionsI still think Kat essentially dying / being lost forever is too dark for the tone of the comic. Plus, I believe the plot so far only makes sense if Annie is meant to prevent such a disaster from happening. Kat saved Annie, broke time and fate to bring her back from the dead. Annie will save Kat too. |

It makes sense that when you successfully design an entirely new type of synthetic lifeform based on human biology it'd affect how you look at humans as well. |

Can the magnetic coil also deactivate it? Will Annie or Paz keep the magnetic coil for the future?
It appears the extra things Paz required are the light, something to hold the tray instead of the table, and a couple things to sit on. |

IS it just me or over the last few pages have there been a lot of comments trying to read the worst possible intentions/meanings into Paz's relatively few and very neutral sounding words. I really don't get the dislike she receives for very minor things.

I really don't get the dislike she receives for very minor things. I agree. Paz has acted out exactly once in the past, with Kat's best interest in mind, and not without some cause. She even expressed regret afterwards (character growth!) Right now she's just being reservedly supportive (a good quality for a SO when you're doing something innovative but potentially dangerous). |

I think for the same reason Paz did, neither look happy about this. The next individuals on Kat's list to ask would be the robots who would do most things Kat would ask them to. Kat doesn't stop with them - she just goes and gets individuals less qualified than them. And they're frankly not qualified in the first place. |

Seriously though. no-one has investigated *how* Zimmy thinks Kat is going to kill her? It could be by accident.

Yeah, paz lookin like she's going to support kat through this but breakup is imminent. Also, I understand this is just an under the skin implant, but why is kat so confident annie really knows what she's doing? Is she trying to turn this into a bonding moment?

Obviously this whole setup feels extremely ominous, but what really stands out to me is Paz' very neutral facial expression throughout. Perhaps a deliberate artistic choice, in order for us to read various positive or negative motives into her behavior? Whatever her motivations may be, Kat is clearly going ahead with this regardless. I just hope Annie isn't going to be the sole person blamed for the negative fallout.

In the first panel we see Kat, leaning forward in a chair, with Paz sitting on a bench facing her and touching her arm and knee, possibly bracing her for stability. Annie stands behind her, wearing white probably latex gloves, apparently prepping something. Kat's back is lit by a lamp that looks a lot like the chapter's title image.
Then we see Annie, still looking rather worried, telling Kat that she'll "feel a little coldness at first." This is probably due to the inevitable alcohol swab or possibly the local anesthetic, but Kat just assents. She then looks over toward a table and says the implant has to be activated using a magnetic coil device, which we see. Kat then gleefully exults about how cool this is going to be, but then we focus on Paz, who isn't smiling at all.
Kat seems very gung-ho about this latest invention of hers, but that's not so unusual; she's often (but not always) enthusiastic about things she's just created. But she's being entirely oblivious to Paz's and Annie's reactions, which are similar if probably slightly different in origin. It looks like Annie's been convinced to not just go along with it but to actually wield the scalpel. I have to wonder whether Kat's already done something to her own brain via drugs, electromagnetic stimulation, or just psyching herself up to this. Kat's behavior is frankly weird, the way she's completely and merrily ignoring her girlfriend's and best friend's reactions and reservations. What if Robot has been doing something to her? What if she's already feeling some "coldness," in the emotionally numb sense?

The part that bugs me is that Kat should be resting her face and neck against somthing for this, this postion isnt a good call for surgery. Seem you could decrease risk and increase comfort by either laying on a massage table, flat or on her side, or in a tattoo chair in a position similar to this. Heck, even just a normal chair backwards would be better then leaning forward on a stool. That's going to be a very awkward cut and sew, and when you're numb it's very easy to move without realizing. I know it's a comic but still this is just a needlessly risky way to do this procedure.
Oh also mecha Kat countdown continues.

I almost didn't post about it because we've had a number of instances where Kat displays a similar tendency... but the more I thought about it the more I wondered if there was more going on. Does this represent progression? I think probably yes though I'd have to reread the comic to confirm it. Come to think of it, why make the chip so that it would need a magnetic field to activate? If it was just an on switch I'd think she could use the soft connection to activate it, so I'll speculate that the chip needs a jumpstart from an external power source that it won't need when the hard link is complete. That they didn't bother with even that is, I think, is to emphasize how minimally invasive this procedure is. Or, maybe I should say, minimally invasive at this stage. Once the chip is in and active it will be maximally invasive. |

Funnily enough, this page reminded me of another page that made me less concerned for Kat's safety. Specifically, this page, where Kat's mother reveal that she had done bodily modifications in the past to increase her technological abilities. That worked out fine, so it makes sense that it would work out fine for Kat as well. |
