+1 for Zimmy. Loup couldn't even go near the star ocean, whereas those two are at what looks like Tony and Annie's house in the oceanside village. That should(?) be inside discomfort range if it was targeted at either of them or just indiscriminate.
But it could be dormant right now, I guess?

Well Kat is asking about other forest denizens.
Honestly I think this is going to come down to either an attempted massacre via draining in number to make up for the lack of power.
Or the comparisons of Zimmy to Coyote and Ether power stations (https://www.gunnerkrigg.com/?p=723) as well as her being referred to as an etheric generator during the Torn Sea is coming back.
I would bet on the latter because the audience has been primed for this chapter as well as before that the Court has switched from not caring to Zimmy being worried.

Looks like Zimmy is their most likely target, especially considering the opening pages of this chapter. Annie is just not powerful enough for the Court's needs.
Another possibility is someone who, while not manipulating the ether is a creation of it and the creation of a massive amount of it. Jones. I think this is unlikely but possible.
The Court gets extremely unscrupulous when it is afraid, and they are panicking now.

Another thing. What is Tony's role in this right now? He is nowhere near as much on the Court's side as they think.
And he has not seen Zimmy but she is the one who saved him from being tricked into harming or killing Annie. And the moment he sees her he will know that. And the Court does not know this. If they try to involve him, they could be in for a nasty surprise.

Okay, did I miss the part where Kat said *where* she got that information? Did the people who tried to convince her to join their idiotic voyage just casually tell her that "oh yes, originally we planned to murder and absorb Coyote to power the Star Ocean, but now we calibrated it to murder someone else, but we're not telling you who, because it's a secret, haha"?
Bonus points if they added "we're also not telling you why we even need the huge power source now, when several people have allegedly already crossed over, but maybe we just like killing Etheric beings".

The Court gets extremely unscrupulous when it is afraid, and they are panicking now. The detail I think that most puts Zimmy ahead of a lot of candidates is that she's by far the individual with least control per pound of power. You could try to make Jones do something. But she's very hard to hurt, is strong, outweighs you and has survived re-entry multiple times. Annie doesn't have the oomph to be a one stop option (though I'm not sure Zimmy is a one stop either, she'd work excellently as a black hole weight for other forest denizens to get murderers around) but is another example of being just straight up harder to capture. With Zimmy's statement at the beginning the problem for everyone not involved with the plot may be the fact that Zimmy no longer trying may be utterly indiscriminate like a hurricane is. Zimmy defaults to bluffs and acting tough. But she was only with Gamma. Who she is willing to admit she's scared to. |

Instead of an Etheric power source, they may have decided to go Eldritch. Perhaps Zimmy is just as "energized" as Loup, but just a different "class" of power.

Zimmy's powers have always had a side-effect that could interest the court even more: People tend to get trapped in her alternate world with her. If the court were to use what they've learned to trigger Zimmy's powers around a large group of other etheric beings, it's possible they could not only drain Zimmy's powers, but also the powers of those trapped with her. They're leaving behind an awfully large group of potential targets.

Kat has just told Annie and Renard that the whole star ocean system's been reconfigured – previously it was calibrated only to draw power from Coyote, assuming they could get him (or Loup, with whom it was also compatible) in range. But now it needs an "enormous" amount of Ether from "a source other than Coyote." The Court's really anxious to leave, because Loup's still at large. Annie asks the obvious question: what source would that be? But Kat doesn't know either, although she's fixated on something in the Forest with that degree of power. Her language is probably geared toward clueing us in: "anything in the Forest that can do anything similar to Coyote." The possibilities that pop into my head are: - Renard. Like Coyote and Ysengrin, he's a cultural figure elevated from story to actual existence by the Ether.
- Zimmy. Kat's "in the Forest" might be an assumption she's making. Loup split Annie into two, and Zimmy recombined her. Seems pretty similar. And Jones told Annie that Zimmy's connected to the Ether in a similar way to Coyote.
- Annie. We still don't know how Zimmy recombined Annie, and this might be why. My theory has been that Zimmy showed Annie what to do, but Annie actually did it. However, I suspect that what Loup did wasn't actually that impressive.
- Jones. She's got no connection to the Ether that she's conscious of, but many theories about her origin point to her being created by it. This billions-of-years-old entity may have tons of Ether in her.
My bet's on Annie. I'll bet they target her. I'm probably wrong. |

This is a very good point; we don't know exactly what they told Kat, and anything they told her might have been to manipulate her – but into doing what exactly, though? Into telling Annie something that would make her assume Zimmy was the target, so she'd go find Zimmy and they could follow her (assuming they don't already know where Zimmy is)? Or, conversely, so she'd go find Zimmy, who they already know the location of, so Annie walks into their trap (but they already know where Annie lives)? Or maybe they want to get both of them together? Maybe it doesn't take that much energy to transport a few people on board a small fishing boat, but the whole ocean liner laden with kilotons of scientific equipment is another matter? |

And Zimmy is extremely good at trapping things. So that would fit with her going for "This is going to be bad" reaction. Because if anyone can successfully trap a Psycho Pomp to be used, Zimmy would be one of the more plausible options. Bonus Points for bringing back a situation where Zimmy going "I'll die here [in Zimmyham] one day." Fits |

Wild spec: when Annie was spying on Tony through the blinker stone, he knew the whole time and was faking his sorrow. He will reveal himself as bargaining away Annie's soul for a chance for a new Surma to be created on Gunnerworld. Essentially, he's been doing an Aizen (from the anime Bleach) the entire time.

Other than Zimmmy the most likely target is a whole group. A whole category of Forest creatures is a possibility. Two that come to mind are the former Forest creatures in the Court and the elves. This is because they are living in the Court and hence easier to target.
I think the Court leadership, being fanatics, have blind spots about other's reactions to their plans, hence their blabbing to Kat. And Zimmy would be angry at an attempt to murder Forest or former Forest creatures.

In light of the opening pages, I suspect it's Zimmy. (though if the Court is planning on using her as the source, it'll probably turn out to be one of its biggest mistakes yet - from what we've seen of Zimmy's power, it'd probably turn the Star Ocean into something out of a Lovecraftian horror story.)

Huh. I'm actually rooting for Annie and Loup to talk now. Agree with the consensus that it's most likely Zimmy they plan to drain. This means that Loup could now approach the ocean without harm, and that the Loup/Zimmy sequence did indeed happen in the order shown. Renard is an outside chance but I really don't think he's got all that much ether stored internally. Annie is another outside chance, but she seems like more of a fire elemental than an ether battery. Remember, neither Annie nor Renard was affected during the cruise, but Zimmy was greatly affected!
Given what we know now, I wonder if they provided the annual cruise to see which kids had a lot of ether? I don't remember seeing anyone other than Zimmy seasick, and I doubt Tom would introduce a new character just for them to be drained by the scammers.
I guess we'll have to wait and see who they lure to the ocean. Or capture and take to the ocean. Time for the nerdbots to fly again?  |

I'm actually a little cold on zimmy as an etheready battery since while powerful, I suspect her abilities don't function similarly enough to how 'normal' etheric beings operate. She might act as a catalyst though, which is equally likely to backfire.
