Hoo boy, things are going to get hot and spicy. I'm loving the confidence That Guy has in Annie, just runs off after a little nod, not even looking back, because she's GOT this.

I’m having trouble deciding whether panel 2 or 3 is my new favorite one of Annie. Leaning towards 2.
Going hot enough to burn away those vines to the point they simply disintegrate within a certain range is… really interesting. Charring them would be one thing, but these things simply burn into nothing the moment they get close enough. I wonder what temperature she’s keeping that space at.

Hopefully, Annie will be able to call upon the full might of her Esper heritage to defeat Kefka.
Oh wait, wrong story...

I expect we're going to get a lot of thrashing that gives way to an anguished, incensed, terrified, and accusatory screed from Loup regarding all of the covert discussions and moves made against him for the entirety of his life and even before it.
To realize that you have been maneuvered and talked around regarding something that is the apple of your eye (in Loup's case, his bid for validated, independent existence) can be, from personal experience, extremely destabilizing*.
The old chestnut "hurt people hurt people" often sounds trite at best or like a dulling of truly heinous histories at worst. But here's an example in which it doesn't feel like an excuse for bad behavior; it, quite matter-of-factly, is what is playing out in front of us.
*And that's not even factoring in his actual destabilization.

That's pretty freaking hot.... like surface-of-the-Sun hot (~5600 C). Annie glows an orange, which is appropriate for a K or early M star, which are a little cooler than our Sun (~4000-5000 C). Sounds reasonable....

I don't know what is going to happen next but I hope Annie doesn't kill Loup. I do approve of Annie taking decisive action though.

Eglamore was in love with Annie's mom, and Jones told Eglamore to "be careful" with Annie, I think he is making sure he is being professional with her. Annie is looking more and more like the Surma Eglamore would remember when he was young as Annie gets older, so he has to guard against becoming creepy teacher that looks lustfully at kids.

See, people, like I said, give Annie a few seconds to focus. I just went back to look through some chapters and it seems like Eglamore always calls Annie "Carver" when talking to her, but calls her "Annie" when talking about her. I wonder if that's a teacher thing? It's not super important, it just struck me when I read this page. In one of the earliest chapters he called her „the Carver girl“ in her absence, and was promptly asked „is that how you think of her?“ When addressing someone directly, I believe it is customary in British schools that students are called by their last name by teachers and other students except their friends. I expect we're going to get a lot of thrashing that gives way to an anguished, incensed, terrified, and accusatory screed from Loup regarding all of the covert discussions and moves made against him for the entirety of his life and even before it. To realize that you have been maneuveredtt and talked around regarding something that is the apple of your eye (in Loup's case, his bid for validated, independent existence) can be, from personal experience, extremely destabilizing*. The old chestnut "hurt people hurt people" often sounds trite at best or like a dulling of truly heinous histories at worst. But here's an example in which it doesn't feel like an excuse for bad behavior; it, quite matter-of-factly, is what is playing out in front of us. * And that's not even factoring in his actual destabilization.Remember how Loup asked „Can you imagine living your life knowing you exist eternally as an allegory for stupidity?“ He found out he was created only as a tool to be used in someone else’s plan and promptly discarded afterwards. It’s like finding out you have been cloned with the sole purpose of having your organs harvested for your original. Bad character or not, I‘d be incredibly angry and lashing out, possibly to the point of not caring if someone gets killed, as well. I’m having trouble deciding whether panel 2 or 3 is my new favorite one of Annie. Leaning towards 2. Going hot enough to burn away those vines to the point they simply disintegrate within a certain range is… really interesting. Hmm, Annie could gradually walk closer to Loup, forcing him to pay more attention to her and eventually, maybe causing him to retreat slowly (to avoid a nasty Annie-sunburn). That would give Eggs and Parley more time to help evacuate the others....

As others have pointed out, she's already atomising tree roots, if Loup is dumb enough to try water he's going to give himself a chernobyl-level sauna. Edit: Which actually might be a good idea from his perspective, because it'd force everyone except himself and Annie out of the fight.

As another root thing bounces off James' shield, there appears to be time enough for a bit of conversation. Annie hasn't done much since her talk with Coyote but fall backward onto the ground and get up to a crouching position – of course, it's probably been only seconds in real time. James says "Carver ..." either to get her attention or to make sure she's all right. He doesn't know about the talk she had with Coyote, but we do, and she might well not be all right. Then, well, we've been waiting for her to use her abilities, and she lights them up. It seems she's going into flame form, starting with her eyes. She claims to be OK. The fire-crown Antimony Regulus symbol appears near her eyes, but now it has a couple more points in between the three that it usually has. Does this signify the extra power she's obtained by being split and recombined? Standing up, she's gone all fiery. Her hair is loose, and some of her clothes look like they're on fire. Does this mean that her hairclips have been destroyed, and will she have burns in her clothes (or burn them off) by the time this is over? Or will these things survive because Ether? She tells James that she thinks she can hold Loup back and that he should help the others. James looks concerned, but he nods. I'm remembering that this is the guy who berated Anthony for even contemplating letting Annie go talk to Loup. But now ... I guess he hasn't seen her turn into fire before, although he has seen her throw a gigantic fireball at him. I guess now that he sees her in full elemental mode, he trusts her judgement, at least while she's close enough that he could still leap to protect her if he has to. Then he actually turns away from her to run and help the others as Annie walks toward Loup. Apparently the aura around her is so intense it simply disintegrates Loup's roots on contact. Her stance looks as if she's doing a slow, deliberate walk, which makes sense. And we finally see what Loup looks like now. He's a mass of red and white fur with root tendrils lashing out of it at random, and his head, with the blue and gray fur around it, seems to be flailing around limply as if it's another root. His teeth and eye have lost definition; we can still see his single Coyote ear, but it's also out of shape. There are some white lines in the air against the dark green background, but it's hard to say whether those are motion lines or more of the lightning we've seen around Loup's head throughout this chapter. I know there was some speculation yesterday that Loup may perhaps not be fully out of control and that he was pursuing some sort of strategy, but I'm not sure how much in control he can be, with his physical form so distorted. But one thing we don't see is how near Annie is to Loup right now. Loup was once able to easily counter her fire abilities, but that was when he was in full possession of his faculties, and Annie's had a power-up since then – and even then, he had to actively do something. It looks like what Annie's about to do is not to attack Loup directly with her fire, but to block his attacks, which appear to be wood-based and are thus weak against fire. If he switches to another type of attack, that could be bad, but I'm not sure he's rational enough to think of that. She might indeed be able to buy Parley, James, and Cvet enough time to get the others away. Of course, what happens then? Since she doesn't even have the dagger, I'm still thinking that we're going to see a retreat, probably at a cost, and then the final confrontation will happen later. I am worried about James.

That face makes me wonder if Coyote has made Loup lose control of his body and powers and he is flailing around uncontrolably rather than attacking... if he were attacking seriously everybody should be dead already...like, he could incinerate them all with an giant fireball, save Annie, who she could deep freeze or send her to space...

I can't get ysengrins warning to annie that the Court was planning to take her away out of my head. Aata doesn't seem to have expected this but could the warning plus this unpleasant visit be related? Did ysengrin know this was going to happen and what the courts reaction might be? Loup seemed to know something about the warning and shut him up, so it could also be an unrelated plot point.

As for James...yeah ok, he's been kind of overprotective of her in the past, but he's mellowed out since then, seen Annie go full fire elemental, and even shown some pretty deep respect for her combat abilities. Besides, James berating Anthony for something is, well...I think he really just needs an excuse to do so, not a legitimate reason. His motivation in that scene was partly "protect Surma's daughter" but even more than that I think it was just "Anthony wants this to happen so it must be bad."

Sounds reasonable.... Just in terms of blackbody radiation, ideal objects hot enough for their thermal radiation peak to shift all the way from infrared to orange are probably in the 1500-2500 C range. But a wood fire burns around 600 C at its core and still looks red/orange, though a good bonfire can get above 1000 C. We see red, orange, and yellow in the flames at lower temperatures because the radiation peak doesn't have to shift into the visible in order for some of the radiation to still be in the visible – in a campfire most of it's still infrared, which of course we can't see. We only see the photons from the hotter parts, but there are lots more that are invisible. We can feel those, though. There's also the fact that the roots are being generated by Loup's powers, so Annie's fire aura might just be disrupting the etheric energy that's making them. Evidence for this is the fact that we're not seeing any smoke or flames. When molten lava, hot enough to glow red, comes in contact with wood, there's plenty of smoke and flames, because of course not all the wood is in direct contact with the lava; some of it starts to burn before the lava even touches it (the heat can vaporize some of the volatile materials in the wood, too, and then ignite them, which can cause explosions). If this were just heat, bits of the roots not in direct contact with Annie's aura would still be getting charred or smoking (or even exploding) because of their proximity, and we don't see that. So I think we're in the realm of etheric physics, which the Court probably teaches classes on, but I haven't taken them, lazy me. With that in mind it's a bit difficult to really say how hot Annie's fire is right now.

Annie's ability to burn some things and not others has been well established, though I suppose the actual explanation for it is pretty well summed up by "because Ether", so I guess you had the right of it. Yes, that's basically what I meant – she somehow has the power to not burn her clothes or hair clip, and somehow carry the clip with her despite the fact that it's obviously not holding any of her hair together. Maybe she caught and pocketed it between frames. This is probably a ridiculous detail to worry about, but I can't help it. I hate losing my stuff, and that clip's one of the only things she brought with her from her childhood in the hospital.Hmm that's true, he has seen her go all fiery before. The casual comment after the battle suggests that he's been Watching Her Career With Great Interest. As Court Protector, he's probably always watching the students' talents develop, with an eye to choosing who should succeed him or at least whose talents would be useful in assisting him in different situations he might find himself in. ("Hmm, we're dealing with lots of wood. We need someone who can use fire, Carver for example." Or, "Hmm, we'll need to hit that target with great accuracy. The Llanwellyn girl might be an asset here.") And I think you may be right about his hostility in Evac; James was just looking for any fault to find with Tony's parenting, because he's had a long-standing bias against him. Yes, it seems I'd forgotten about that incident. Oops. But ... what I said above. His attitude toward Annie has evolved.
