[Edit: other than Jones, Loup has also said that Coyote never lies but he also doesn't tell the truth. So it sounds like Coyote is capable of lying but doesn't find it as amusing as saying things that are technically true but are not really.] Robert Heinlein wrote that the two best ways to lie are: 1) Tell the truth, nothing but the truth, but not the whole truth; 2) Tell the truth, the whole truth, and nothing but the truth, in such a way that nobody believes you.

My thoughts:
1. The animals that join the court become male. 2. Coyote calls Reynardine cousin. 3. Coyote has given his power away to others. 4. Aata is bitter.
I think we are looking at a forest spirit in the vein of Coyote and Reynardine who joined the court due to some combination of being entranced by the court's science-y power and a falling out with Coyote, and becomes a male human. He rises in rank and is driven by his desire to take Coyote's power.

Eeeee. Who was chatting with me at one point about C.S. Lewis's That Hideous Strength? Aata sounds just like one of the baddies playing around with Logres and drawing on demonic powers instead. As Anthony did, more or less innocently, I think.

"Loup will attack you in rage and it is all your fault..." Loup attacks court right when he is born, but it isn't from rage but to show off/establish dominance. www.gunnerkrigg.com/?p=2487 Loup: "Lets say I keep you alive, does that extend to the people you surround yourself with?" "I... I had no choice in their coming..." "then this will not be your fault"... Loup acting as if he will kill the rest of the people to show off. ... Coyote previously manipulated Ysengrin including taking memories away from him to create Loup the way he is now. "it is all your fault..." Aata could say it is all Coyote and Loups fault as honestly as Coyote is being right now... "From a certain point of view"- Obi wan in star wars about Luke's dad being killed by Vader. Aata can say "self defense" against Loups attempt to murder them.

Aata sounds just like one of the baddies playing around with Logres and drawing on demonic powers instead. Compared to Loup... first gets power and goes on rampage, and minutes ago in story was racing to perhaps kill the rest of the humans surrounding Annie. And Coyote setup Loup to become what he is now. ... Annie asked what is Gunnerkrigg court? (long ago) Coyote answered it was about men trying to get power of gods. The people running court are getting physically old and weak, in relatively short time their minds will be failing if they live that long. Not very surprising that they would want be forever young and strong and powerful... Kat is creating nice new bodies and transferring robot minds into them. I suspect old humans would also love to have their minds transferred into better bodies (over and over again if required) to live forever young and strong. When people die they are recycled to "make the world keep spinning", potentially serve as a fuel for psycopomps... Rest of the Dead kind of disagreed with that, liked at least some people after death to have some fun We may be in a story about power corrupts and absolute power corrupts absolutely, but if so I don't think Aata and the humans are alone with that risk, others with power potentially abuse that power.

I thought it appropriate you mentioned Aata in connection with "That Hideous Strength"; he reminded me of the description of Filostrato as "fat to that degree which is comic on the stage, but the effect was not funny in real life".

For (emphasis) sure. Well spotted.
