Yin! You missed the topic starter, causing edzepp and I to post simultaneously!
Yikes, Zimmster. "Cranky" may have been a minor understatement.
Also, Angry Annie is quite a fright (do I get bonus points for alliteration and rhyming?). At least she softens up, but she certainly brooks no nonsense. Is this the first time she's been physically accosted in the comic? I think so.
EDITSIES: Being something of a moron, I forgot to mention the last 2 panels of the comic, which though not particularly surprising do reveal a refreshing side of Zimmy.
EDIT #2: And oh crap, cue a 9.0 on the 4Chan shipper scale.

In before 'shipper validation.
I have to feel sorry for zimmy though, it must be miserable living like that, and now annie is breaking her down further.

I love this.
Wonder if this is leading to Annie questioning Zimmy about her lying to Gamma.

Agreed. I really like the contrasts here. First Annie pulls some ninja moves to take down Z, and then Z throws an outburst like that? As soon as I read that line about her not being alive without Gamma, all I could see was that frame where we see Gamma meeting Z in the middle of BFE, yo. They're tight.

Wow. This is actually really sweet. There are a lotta emotional highs in this page, enough that it may actually be one of my favorites from the comic so far. I'm still wondering whether Annie's extreme martial arts are really the proportionately appropriate response to Zimmy's tantrum, but either she has her reasons, or she's getting pretty emotional herself.

I'd like to know where Annie learnt her combat skills as well. The adults all seem to have martial skills, and the court seems happy to train in some forms of combat, but when did Annie learn to fight?
She seems to have skills, taking down the red eyed daemon girl that Reynardine is scared of and not breaking a sweat.

Love her? I'm not sure about that. Zimmy seems more like an addict to me (addicted to Gamma, since her presence is just about the only thing that makes her feel okay). Then again, love and addiction do have certain things in common. ) As for Annie's martial arts skills, I'd assume she picked up some basics from accompanying the guides, back in Good Hope. She seems to have learned a lot of curious things there, like about half a dozen languages or so. Heh, I don't think it takes Chow Yun Fat-like skillz to take down an angry little girl that's flailing about uncontrollably.

eightyfour: I think she genuinely cares for her. Besides being her anti-reality-warping drug, Gamma is also the only person that has ever accepted her as she is. Probably even her parents, after she has developed her powers (assuming she was not born with them), ran away cowering in horror.

It's not clear to me that Annie had to be taught any fighting skills; she's got natural talent. In an odd way, I don't think she's fighting -- instead, she's just, well, negotiating by using physics.
Also, I don't feel that Zimmy is a terribly formidable opponent. She's wild and uncontrolled, and obviously has a radically different sensorium from most people -- I don't think blindness is quite right.
Somehow, I'm trying to fit these two pieces together to explain what appears to be an uncharacteristically cruel approach on Annie's part. It's almost as if...as if...
...As if Annie had to do this to get Zimmy to say what she's saying. I don't think anyone has ever before gotten Zimmy's attention. Zimmy's not lazy, exactly, it's just that she's in so much pain that anger is the only way she knows how to react.
And it's worked. Just as Zimmy folded immediately before Annie's physical attack, she's also yielding to Annie's emotional attack, bending, even breaking a bit, but in exactly the right way. Like breaking a crooked arm to set it straight again.
This is a moving sequence. Zimmy is one of the most tragic characters I've seen in a very long time.

Hey Ref, fancy seeing you here ;D Annie is not really being violent as such, this move here is probally the best way of stopping Zimmy from either hurting Annie or herself. Annie seems to be worried about Kat too, so she's a little less patient with Zimmy's crap that normal. To be honest I don't think Annie really likes Zimmy very much. She's always polite and inclined to be helpful but I think Zim's rudeness almost certainly rubs her up the wrong way. I doubt she's too impressed with the lying to Gamma either, someone Annie does like. Also, yay for fluffy shippy cuteness

Proclamations of love while one has snot dripping down their face makes it kind of hard to say for sure what she really means here, so I'm desperately trying to stifle calling a point for Team Sappho

After reading some comments on the comic front page I wonder where people get their impression about Annie's fighting skills?
What Annie did: Fend off Zimmy's "attack" (if you can even call it that) and restrain her in order to prevent her from hurting anybody.
What Annie did not do: Go medieval on Zimmy's ass and slap her all around the block.
I mean, comeon! It's not like Annie became a berserking Kunf-Fu master all of a sudden! ;D What Annie did there you can learn in a two-hour crash course about self-defense.

I doubt a nice throw would qualify exactly as having martial skills, but Annie was defending herself. Notice that Zimmy swung her fist towards her.
I really didn't expect this kind of development, so I was pleasently surprised. I somehow doubt this will be the last surprise by the end of this chapter. Zimmy has desperate need for Gamma, in more ways than one. So I have no reason to doubt she speaks the truth. However, I am interested in Gamma's feelings too. What does she think of her filthy friend?
It's also important to notice that in this particular situation we have two dysfunctional girls who both depend on one person (Kat and Gamma). Naturally, both of them want nothing else but to reunite. This is the source of the conflict.

Take downs like that are common self defence meneuvers thought in classes for any member of the public willing to take them.
Theres a nifty thumb grab that hurts like hell and makes the reciever go on their knees.
Annie really isnt being violent here. This is infact a non violent self defensive meneuver.
What annie did was subdues the Zeta. That meneuver restricts a persons movement [if you move you bend and twist your arm, which hurts and if you're stubborn, you'll break something]. Plus if they're still being an ass somehow, you can twist their arm a bit.
Zeta reacts to her stress and sadness through anger and violence, in other words, aggression. Its a mental defence. This can give a person a sense of control and an outlet for the pain. WHen she got subdued her emotions needed another outlet and she broke down and went into a more submissive [or atleast less violent] form of expression.
Now, if Annie wanted to be violent, she would have broken zetas arm in a lot of different ways in a lot of different places.

I don't begrudge anyone saying they'd like to see Gamma and Zimmy as a romantic couple, but I don't think Zimmy's declaration is as strong evidence for that 'ship as everyone's saying. Philos is not Eros.

On a less serious issue: Annie wearing all-black and a trenchcoat? Freaky alternate universe? Martial arts? Right now we're just the ray-bans short of a matrix movie!

The problem is just here: where did she learn them? obviously offscreen. But, where? in Good Hope? Or at some self defense course held by Eglamore? Or better, like me, at the park playing with other kids? ...wait. If we know right, she has very little contact with same-age-people before coming to GC. eightyfour: we also lack bulky black mobile phones.

Much as I enjoy shipping, I think Gamma and Zimmy share sisterly and/or platonic love rather than romantic.
Also, can I just say I love this arc so far and I'm really looking forward to seeing where it goes.

eightyfour:Yes, and i do not like where this is drifting to. Please remember that on the forum was a topic about kat+annie and that even Tom got quite pissed off, and killed it off. Please, people, do not repeat the error. Also, do not get any idea about this kind of thing without a solid evidence.
