Never mind that. Shouldn't Jones be calf deep in the sand, at least? (obviously likes the feel of sand between the toes.) Actually, no she shouldn't. We don't know exactly how much Jones weighs, but it's not an outrageously large amount: she can sit on a coffee table without it collapsing (in panel 4). This makes sense if we take her to be made of something with density comparable to stone ( 2300-2800 kg/m3, compared to the density of human body at 1000 kg/m3). A woman of her proportions would weigh somewhere in the region of 60 kg, which would put Jones in the 140-170 kg range. That's the weight of a professional sumo wrestler, such as these two: you would notice that they barely sink up to their ankles even when wrestling, i.e. pushing hard against the sand. I've BOTE'd it again and got a range of 66-340kg which I think was about what I got last time; I don't think she can possibly be above or below that without etheric shenanigans. The upper limit is me being generous with the loadbearing capacity of furniture and about how much of her weight is actually being supported by the floor so I'd speculate that she's probably in the lower third of that range.

Is That Guy the only human in the running for Annie's crush? I've always thought it might be Donald. Best friend's dad, all-around awesome guy, treats her like her own person instead of a kid. But yeah, I think all the signs point to Eglamore, especially after this page. Let's also keep in mind that when Idra first met everyone, she probably noticed this interaction between Eglamore and Annie.

Oh, another idea, not sure if anyone mentioned it before: perhaps the Court is having Jones do the psych eval to see if Annie should accompany Aata et al when returning the pond water. Although my cookie-bet is still on Tony.

I don't think that is indicative of a crush so much that it is indicative of Annie being a sucker for compliments. Which... is not the point you made, the point you made was that Idra might've interpreted it that way. Which is valid.

Although my cookie-bet is still on Tony. My bet is that she is doing an evaluation on Annie, the fact that people that know her all seem to reach the conclusion that her relationship to her father is something to investigate closer is the point that will eventually cause her to visit him, as we saw in the beginning of the chapter.

Yes, please, don't even joke about that. So did they invite Jones on their cute double-date beach walk or did she just silently insert herself into the activity and start asking questions about the mental state of a teenager(s)? I sure hope so! As for Idra, she rubs me the wrong way completely. This is probably just me reacting to the kind of person who just makes me feel cornered in general I liked Idra initially, but her icky behavior towards the Annies at Egg's house killed off that sympathy as well. And given that he's been basically acting (or trying to act) like a surrogate parent to her since he's been in the comic (which Annie rejects, but still), seeing that was kind of like finding out that your parents are having sex. More like finding out one of your parents is having sex with someone who then promptly proceeds to hold their naked butt in front of your face.

The blush on that page was odd, but since it only came from one Annie, I didn't think it was the crush they were referring to when Cvet was listening in on them. I interpreted it then as just her enjoying a compliment which she rarely gets (although obviously I could be wrong). My money is still on one of the non-humans. Jones, Renard, Ysengrin (ok maybe not that last one) seem more likely than a human to me. Besides Kat, Annie always seems the most open and happy to see those three. She's also the most physically intimate with them. Even in this chapter, Annie grabs Jones by the hands when she says she wants to talk, which she really doesn't do for any of her peers. Not that it couldn't be Eglamore, it's just never struck me in any of her other interactions with him. She's mostly been dismissive or thankful of him.

I mean Annie and Surma are just different vessels for the same endlessly reincarnated soul y'all I dunno why it would be weird for both of them to think Jimmy's hot. They're very different. Upbringing and genetics matter a lot. Jones and Coyote both commented on her being much calmer than her mother, which is because of her father. Annie is much more comfortable with a small group of friends, whereas Surma seemed to very much need validation more in a larger group. I think Annie is also horrified at the way her mom took advantage of Renard. Surma very clearly identified with the human side of her to an almost exclusive degree, whereas Annie really enjoys the fire elemental side of herself and relates to that in a way that Surma never seemed to. They obviously still have things in common, their penchant for mischief and shirking the rules for one. Their insecurities seem to be different too. Surma's were much more physical, whereas Annie's are intellectual. I think if I were to boil it down, Surma was overall kinder and warmer, at least on the surface. Annie is colder, but much more empathetic. There is something about Annie that is incredibly comforting, and I'm thinking specifically of the chapter she takes Mort to the other side. I can't imagine Surma doing that with the kind of thoughtfulness Annie showed. Having been attacked by Jeanne, I can't imagine Surma wanting to ease her suffering. Obviously, we've seen a lot more of Annie than Surma, so I am probably being unfair to her, but that's my impression anyway.

I'm not sure why people want to immediately rule out Jimmy as being Annie's crush. There have been hints. I don't have the energy tonight to search out the links, sorry, got some health things going on. Hopefully my memory will be good enough. Way back when she first went to Eglamore's office to get her first detention, she stopped outside to fix her hair. When she found out Idra was sleeping with him, she (both of her) got angry! Not just embarrassed. When she zapped Parley and Jimmy into her room during the Loup attack, Parley teased her about it, and she immediately knew what Parley was talking about - interesting for someone who is so often socially unaware! Idra sees it too, as we saw in the current page. On many occasions, she's been unwilling to let him help her, or carry her, etc. It's been a long time since I've been a teenager, but isn't that sort of a sign of a crush? Pretending you hate the guy when you're really trying to deny your own feelings? Maybe there is some residual feeling from the spirit of her mother inside her? It could be that this isn't really an Annie thing at all in a sense. I dunno, I certainly don't know for sure, but I also don't have another candidate she's had any interactions like any one of many she's had with Jimmy. Methinks the lady doth protest too much. On the bright side, Eglamore has been nothing but adult and professional with her, going all the way back to the incident in the gym with the ball and the judo throw. She, of course, fluffed up at him when they talked - a type of emotional reaction I just can't remember her having with anyone else. Let's hope he sticks with that - I really don't want to see an ugly thing happening and poisoning their future interactions. I agree he's been trying to be more of a parent to her, which is great.

I assumed it was embarrassment at the fact that she'd been snippy earlier in that chapter about being able to take care of herself, followed by her fire not working. She was a bit useless and angry about it. And then Eggers goes out of his way to mention how capable she is - it was like he was making sure she knew he didn't think she was as useless as she felt when they were in the wisp-brain. On a completely different note - what beaches in England actually have sand? I've only been to the rocky ones.

Let's hope he sticks with that - I really don't want to see an ugly thing happening and poisoning their future interactions. I agree he's been trying to be more of a parent to her, which is great. This is interesting, but of course a lot of these are up to interpretation. The Idra moment can be interpreted many ways, but if it is just anger, that came way after the whole interaction. Idra wasn't exactly being kind in that moment, and Annie was much angrier with the Court people than with Idra. I don't interpret the room thing in the same way at all. Annie definitely has moments of being socially unaware, but I think you're overstating it. She has plenty of moments of picking up subtle social things, it's just inconsistent. I will agree that her not letting Eglamore help her or carry her could be a sign of a crush, but it could also just as easily be her not wanting to be condescended to. Eglamore is the person most often shitting on her dad, and Annie has never been a fan of that. Her conversation with Parley about it seemed really dismissive of Eglamore in a way a crush wouldn't make sense. I will also give you the fixing her hair thing. The art was pretty rough back then so I don't know how to take it, but it definitely could be that.

Yeah Annie has blushed before when she was complimented in a context that wasn't meant to be interpreted as a crush. (If I recall correctly, Tom mentioned in one of those youtube chapter commentary videos that Annie sees Ysengrin as a father figure.) People blush when they're embarrassed, or like when they're complimented by people they respect, it is not always indicative of a crush, my god. I'm finding it hilarious that you guys think her fixing her hair means she had a crush or whatever. Most girls are taught to put a lot of effort into their appearance. When I was that age, I was extremely self-conscious and always making sure I looked my best and always adjusting my hair or checking my clothes before going to an important meeting or whatever. It'd be like saying "Oh Annie put her hair in ponytail/put on make up before going to see someone in such-and-such chapter, clearly this means she had a crush on that character!" Overall I agree with your argument, and in any other context I wouldn't put much weight to the fixing her hair, it's just Annie doesn't usually do that, and Tom doesn't usually add details like that for no reason. Also, like I said, it's up to interpretation. I wasn't saying it is indicative of anything, just that it is a possibility, as so many things are in the comic.

Actually, no she shouldn't. I love that panel, but I always wondered whether she actually sits on the coffee table, or just squats such that she doesn't put her full weight on it. That would be a silly explanation of course and I should just take it as given, but it would be hilarious. Note how the coffee table creaks as Jones sits on it? Also, we don't know how much special reinforcing her furniture has. The table does look pretty sturdy. Still, good point about sumo wrestlers.

Ok but like I'm confused why all this gotta be a big debate and everything? Eggers is a big ole sexy boi. Annie and Surma are only different people going by our mortal concept of what a person is. Etherically she's the same exact soul just inhabiting different mortal forms - the whole deal about how Renard acts different in wolf vs plush mode is a reflection of that theme, yeah? Also how fire can take many forms depending on the fuel, etc etc.
So yeah obviously Annie and Surma are different due to various factors and all that, but even so they're fundamentally the same being. Just like how Renard's the same no matter what body he's in or how he's behaving. On a meta level I reckon it's a bit of a question about how much of our parents do we carry with us and what does it mean to be an individual and so on.
All that to say dang y'all ain't no law says you gotta want to get with a dude just cause you think he's smokin hot. Dude can just be a big ole awkward distraction. And I imagine it'd be a real severe flavor of awkward if you're aware on some level that from a certain perspective you have in fact got with that dude... aaand then cheated on him with a guy whose personality crashes past the first process request.
Also typing this made me wonder if the Fire Spirit might have more of an interest in big hunky men than your average campfire - far as we know she's the only one of her kind to ever decide getting frisky with a human would be a great idea. Girl knows what she's about.

Girl knows what she's about. 100 percent agree. You don't even have to have your mom essentially downloaded into you to fall for the same kind of guys she did. Girls and women (and boys and men) do it all the time IRL. I would have been shocked if she didn't think James was powerfully attractive. As someone who had a crush on a boss for a couple years (as far as I could tell he never had a clue, or else we were each as professional about it as the other), I can high-five that "just because you think a dude is smokin' doesn't mean you want to get with him". Oh, what a mess that would have been if we had.

I always got the impression that Annie doesn't like Eglamore much, though that doesn't preclude her having a crush of course...
As for Surma and Annie essentially being the same person, though, that strikes me as off in a way. But hasn't this been one of the themes of this comic? (As is often the case with stories where the MC is a reincarnation) Whether Annie is her own person or not. Of course, what makes a person who they are can become quite a philosophical debate.

And I am not sure why some people want to twist all the hostile interactions she's had with Eglamore into hints of her being attracted to him. From "I don't think your advice is very appropriate!" to "Leave me alone! I don't need anything!" to "Absolutely not!" to all the times Eggers has been badmouthing her dad (which we know she doesn't like). And in "Annie in the Forest" she thinks about which of the guys she knows she actually likes and Eggman's mug is specifically crossed out.
About not wanting to be carried etc. by him. Kat was depicted as having a crush on Eggers very openly and those were exactly the things she dreamed about. Pretending not to like the guy you like is what Annie tried out with Jack, and it failed spectacularly.
Ok but like I'm confused why all this gotta be a big debate and everything? Eggers is a big ole sexy boi. Annie and Surma are only different people going by our mortal concept of what a person is. The comic has shown her to have a very different personality, and even if she were 100% Surma... Well, 5-year-old me and current (32-year-old) me are also the same person and yet very, very different. So I doubt she is bound to like the same guys her mother did. Of course many people fall for the same kind of person their mother or father did, I'm not denying this! But remember also that Surma fell for two guys who are basically polar opposites. So, if you keep it with "Annie will like the same kind of guys her mom liked" then she could just as well fall for a very stoic person, like Jones. Although the only boy we know for sure she did have romantic feelings for (Kamlen) was again totally different from both.

I want to believe she jumped from far away and fell right in the middle of them and started asking the Annie questions right away.

Whats up with that steadman characters beard? Why he got 3 colors of hair This isn't uncommon in men as grey hair starts coming in. In his case it looks like there's no grey on his head yet, so it's still black. His beard has grey in it, so parts of it appear grey, but other parts look brown due to the mixture of grey hairs with the black causing them to appear lighter. It's also possible he colors his hair, but didn't bother trying to color his beard.

I have a similar hair color pattern as egalmore. WHen I was younger, my hair was a lighter shade of brow hair, that got darker as I got old. Since I shave often, my beard would be lighter in shade, and it has gotten to the point i have grey hair spots on it too. I still feel his beard would be a much darker shade of brown tho.

I think we're all agreed that she had a thing for Kamlen, but it's also the case that he was really the first boy to show any interest in her. She didn't crush on him the way Kat crushed on Eglamore over many years. He was nice to her, she thought he was (at least physically) attractive, and her crush seems to have stemmed from there. I don't know that Kamlen can be used for anything except establishing that Annie is not asexual, which was a running idea in the forum before Annie in the Forest came out.
