Also we can't see Tony's feet. In my headcanon I am imagining he still hasn't found his shoes yet. now I'm stuck with the image of his feet in ragged dirty socks with several toes poking out...

All this talk about Annie hiding pain... Gee, I read her enthusiastic double handed handshake as her being in a real good mood.

The people saying that Antimony's body language and expressions are off definitely have a point but I'm withholding judgement on what it means. There's too many possibilities. She could just be stoked that she's reunified, she could be dealing with side effects, she could be genuinely unbalanced, or maybe she just doesn't want Jones to know what she's going off with Kat to do (probably regarding robots) later. Maybe the merger is temporary so she's fighting herself a bit already. Hell, maybe Antimony's learned so much about herself that she's made up her now-singular mind to go somewhere and do something about whoever/whatever she's hinted at being attracted to and, ironically, attempt to stop being single. Whatever the truth is, I'm not sure how much time has passed but I will speculate that Antimony hasn't fully processed her/their experiences yet so it would be weird if she was acting normal.

- Having her sanity questioned makes Annie really uncomfortable (as it would for most people)
Huh. Is that so? Most of the times my sanity was questioned I took it as a compliment. But then those moments might not be comparable with what Annie experienced right now. In any case, I never thought about the possibility that most people would feel uncomfortable then.

I super-duper-hope that we stay with Jones and Tony, and this isn't just a beat. :D Not directly related to today's comic, but I'm also really curious what Loup will think of the merged Annie. He'll do it AGAIN!!! /j

I vote for hoochie coochie. *cues belly dance music* I laughed out loud at this one, the image it presented was just so damn hilarious.
Then I scrolled down through some other comments, and realized, with a slow, creeping, horror, that people were actually taking it seriously.
What the hell, you guys?! Seriously, what the hell?!

In any case, I never thought about the possibility that most people would feel uncomfortable then. I'm not talking about the type of joking questioning of your sanity where it could be considered a compliment. I'm talking about the possibility of somebody with authority diagnosing you with a serious mental illness. That would make me uncomfortable, especially in a world where that authority is nebulous and faceless and has the power to hire and fire me and (nearly) everyone I know, or to exile me to an outside world I know little about, far away from all my friends and family, or to have me committed, possibly to a facility where I'd be experimented on.

As to whether they would make a good couple, it might be a relief for them to find someone who is also having a hard time with emotions, but it seems their romantic interests do not lie that way. (Though with Jones it might be inaccurate to call it romantic) Jones is currently in some relationship with Eggers who is not exactly an example of stoicism and Tony fell for fiery Surma. Eglamore fell for Surma too, though; it's clearly possible for people to be attracted (in whatever sense) to Jones and Surma both. I don't think the fact that Tony fell for Surma 15-whatever years ago means he can only ever be interested in Surma clones. Not that I'm particularly seeing romance here. But I can see Tony being very comfortable with a woman(-shaped being) who is physically and emotionally invulnerable, analytical but non-judgmental, and who views herself as part of the natural environment. And I can see Jones being very interested in a man who is endlessly curious, exceptionally strong-willed, and altruistic to a self-punishing extreme.

Since people are talking about a potential relationship between Jones and Tony(something I simply do not see; if for no other reason she claims not to have emotional capabilities), I want to point to two previous instances which might indicate that they are working together on a secret agenda: When Annie first brought up Jeanne Jones interrupted her train of thought to bring across the message that Annie must investigate this Jeanne person. When the full story was revealed Jones and Tony answered in sync with the final message that there is no need to bring this information up. It might be nothing, but my read is that Jones was trying to keep the story under wraps and that Tony was potentially in on it. Then again, when Annie could end up in trouble Jones made sure to formulate herself in a way that would make sure she would be in less trouble, so it could just be that she was trying to protect Annie in not bringing the story up to the court, without any thoughts given to the Jeanne situation.

In which case, yeah, Jones. What did you think she was gonna say when you asked her about her mental state right in front of her dad? The awkward glance between Annie and Kat is them both thinking, "Why is she asking me/you about this RIGHT HERE??" This was my thought as well. Her reaction makes sense given the added knowledge that Tony is standing right there. He's obviously concerned about Annie and/or Kat, since he's seeing them off, but that doesn't mean Annie is going to be suddenly comfortable talking about her mental health in front of him. I sure as hell wouldn't want an impromptu therapy session in front of my emotionally distant/abusive father, either. Talk about uncomfortable.

Eglamore would flip out if another woman left him for Tony. (Even without that, I doubt it.) See, now, people think this a comic about a girl who loses her hair clip and the zombie that spends 50+ chapters trying to get it back to her, when it's really about all of Eglamore's girlfriends and how they all leave him for that girl's emotionally distant father.

Hmmmmmmm.
Spent all day thinking about this. You know if Jones has brought a lot of people to the Court, and she brought Eglamore, it is also possible she was the one who first got in contact with Tony. It is also quite possible she knows more about Tony's family or background than almost anyone else. Not to mention they both work for the Shadow Men. I don't think they're dating or necessarily would date, but they probably are closer to each other (at least in mutual understanding) than we've thought to suppose previously.

Since it seems Kat and Annie just left Tony (and Annie's) house, the meeting seems a bit too fortuitous. I'm guessing Jones was tracking Annie using the Court's "food tracking devices" and aimed to catch them just after leaving Tony, so she could get an impression from both and talk the findings over with Tony. The possibility that that might be the Carvers' home that Tony's emerging from had simply not occurred to me. I had thought he had just been observing all of this from within a random nearby building. But yes, Annie and Kat either just left Tony and Annie's house or another house exactly like it, because those sure look like the same steps. Excellent observation about the entranceway which does strongly imply that it's Tony's house in both scenes. I notice that the panes in the window to the left of the door look a bit different between the two scenes, but I think it's fair to attribute the inconsistency to "artistic differences" (same for the window or non-window to the right of the door). I don't believe I've seen a window with panes as depicted here in panel 5, and I don't know how such a window would operate, but that's probably a meaningless quibble.

This new page really made me jump to the "The mind cage is about Tony" theory that fia already mentioned here : gunnerkrigg.proboards.com/post/167000/threadTo me it looked like Tony was the one who sent Jones to ask about Annie (Jones did mention in the previous page that curious "people" were the reason she was talking to Annie). And Tony thinking that Jones is a better option than him for social interactions with his daughter would be a very strong symbol about his inability to communicate with her. Tony being the one in mind prison would explain why the notion was introduced by Saslamel, only to be discarded straightaway in the case of Kat. That would be because the chapter was meant to present the possibility, without Kat being the real target. I do also wonder if one of the points of Annie splitting in two was to highlight Tony's strange behaviour with her (and maybe trigger the time travelling tik tok plot as well), which would be why her being shifted could be resolved so easily now that it served its purpose.

My first impression was that Jones, having failed to get much out of Annie, is now going to ask Tony for the inside scoop. (He lives with Annie, so he might know how she's really doing.) I'm probably wrong, but I don't think anybody's posted that theory yet, so I'm putting it out there. See, now, people think this a comic about a girl who loses her hair clip and the zombie that spends 50+ chapters trying to get it back to her, when it's really about all of Eglamore's girlfriends and how they all leave him for that girl's emotionally distant father. Such a window is not uncommon in the British Isles. It's called a casement window. The large pane is hinged on the wall side and opens outward like a door. The medium pane isn't designed to open. The small pane is hinged on the top and opens outward from the bottom. Here's such a window as seen from inside the house: origin-global.com/Media/Default/advice%20centre/_ASP3582%20copy.rt-1600x1600.jpgIt's actually the odd-looking sash window in panel 4 that I've never seen as such in either the Americas or the British Isles.

Since all this romance talk was brought up, my secret (not so secret) ship has always been Annie x Jones. I know the ages are wrong and a million other reasons why it wouldn't work out. But still. My only hope is when Zimmy was looking into Annie's dreams, and Jones shows up naked at the same time as Kamlen.
Anyways, you can get back to your Jones and Tony shipping *sigh*.

It's actually the odd-looking sash window in panel 4 that I've never seen as such in either the Americas or the British Isles. Sash windows were common in the UK: wooden framed, single glazed. My wife grew up in a Victorian terrace house that had them in almost every room. Many have been replaced with UPVC double glazing in recent decades. It seems nobody's come up with a practical double-glazed equivalent. Doubled-up single glazed panels (with optional bug screen in between) are practically unheard of here. (p.s. thanks for the term 'casement': I know those windows, but didn't know the name for them.

She had a crush on Kamlen, her memories went romantic, the next step dreamwise was going naked, so she had "going naked" in her mind at the same time that her memories of Jones coming with her make-up/symbolical mask so "Jones" + "going naked" ended up with Jones in the nude. This in turn lead to her memories of the time she lost her make up and emotional barriers in the cherry room with Kat, of her lowering her guard and letting herself be vulnerable... only the fact that she was copying Kat's homework was something she still had in the back of her mind in regards to "keeping people at a distance" and "Kat".

What connection other than romantic would there be for Jones?

Yes, I also have jumped to the conclusion that the mind cage is Tony's, and probably of a Saslamel-type origin, which can explain why it's so strictly tied to one Annie and not the other. Although Tony clearly has some pre-existing personality problems as well.

I just also wanted to point out that I like the resonance of the door and room colors behind Tony and the Jones' hair and clothes. They match. Could be foreshadowing, could just be nice graphic design, but I like it.

What connection other than romantic would there be for Jones? My interpretation was always that she liked Jones very much, especially admiring how she seems not to express any emotion. Hence Jones wearing a mask, and lending it to Annie - she's showing her how to be a perfect, blank facade. Later in the dream, Annie willingly unmasks only when she's being vulnerable and showing emotion with Kat. Annie's mask motif is used frequently with her fire spirit (literally and figuratively, the fiery anger within her), including here and again here. Annie masking her emotions, learning to deal with her emotions, being overwhelmed with emotion, and masking them again is a long running theme of the comic. We see it happen without an etheric lens (emotionally masking, but we can't see the mask) in the physical space here. Anyway, sorry if I rambled a bit, but I think that dream was Annie secretly seeing Jones as a role model. They've always mutually respected each other and both have even said so aloud. I'm excited about this chapter because I wonder, with Annie growing and changing so much recently, if her dynamic with Jones has changed as well.

I feel like I may be veering into wild spec, but I definitely think most of what you've said makes the Jones being the secret crush theory way stronger. Having tons of respect for and seeing someone as a role model doesn't really mean they can't also be attracted to them in some way, in fact those things are commonly part of why people want someone. Seeing someone as less emotional can also happen while being attracted to them. I don't disagree with your assentment about Jones and Annies dynamic, just that I'd end it with "and thats why part of Annie crushes on Jones." Keep in mind crush doesn't mean "seriously want to date or even presue". Like, I don't think that's where anything is going.
