So my understanding of this panel - Kat makes the original, sends it back in time. Fast forward to the present, she sends it back in time again, so now there are two in the past. When they reach the present, she can send them both back so she has four. Tic-tocs ad infinitum. Each time she does this, she's creating a new timeline. To be honest, I'm surprised this was so immediate. I figured Kat would show Annie the tic-tocs, learn that they already existed, and reason that she must have sent them to the past - so she then would know it was possible. I'm glad this was so straightforward instead. EDIT: So this would mean that the Annie that was saved by the tic-tocs is from an alternate timeline, leaving open the possibility that one of the Annies is the "original" one.
welcome to the forum, Ellies! You certainly lept in it an interesting time (or times?)....

Oh. Of course. They even have the Alistair-inspired white crest.
This is... actually really cool. Wow. Looking back and seeing just how much foreshadowing has been planted for so long. I keep having to reread the comic after major revelations like this, looks like I'm due for another archive binge soon, haha!

Woah, a second page of comments already!
In the last panel, Kat looks like she had so much weight lifted off her sholders that the sudden lack of it makes her feel empty inside. Words just flow out of her. What's the Friday mini-cliffhanger, I wonder?

And also it may elevate Kat above Diego from the robots' perspective.

Interestingly, Tom changed that line in the print edition. Instead, Kat says "They were right! They said you'd be okay!" As I recall, he said that the change was made because he realized that if Annie had died, her contract of ownership over Renard would have ended, and Anja would have been able to sense that, as he had established in Chapter 7. So Anja would have known that Annie was still alive.

Heh. That would be fitting. And also it may elevate Kat above Diego from the robots' perspective. Yeah, but they are also similiar in a certain way. Diego couldn't bear Jeanne going away, and Kat couldn't do that either for Annie. Now, obviously, there is a huge moral difference between ehtherically imprisoning someone because they wanted to flee the court and didn't love you, and saving someone from death because you don't want to see them die. I am not saying Kat is selfish and destructive like Diego was. But both acted out of an affection, constructed an object that did prevent someone from (fully) dying, and their loved ones died and met each other in the ravine. Love makes you act in strange ways, indeed.

The cute pixel game Tom made of Year 7 Annie and Mort running around the empty halls of the Court (in her year 7 dorm with the ladders!) is some master class "the Annie from this timeline died" imagery. Would you like to play a little game with Mort and Annie?

My guess is that the "original" Annie fell from the bridge and died. Since chapter 8 Annie we know is actually Annie from the alternate timeline. MY guess is Annie died, yes, on that timeline/dimension. Then Ethernal Kat said: "Unacceptable", and created the TicTocs to save her from the fall, on another timeline. THEN, Annie still died from Jeanneitis-to-the-face, so, she created the antigrav and gave it to herself as kid to make sure she saved Annie from that one, too.

I guess Muut saying that "someone who is 'just fine' would not be in this place" has a new meaning, now.
Either way, that's pretty incredible, and I've been loving the whole discussion this relevation has brought to the board.
Additionally, why is Kat so bummed?
Her best friend is "alive", give or take, and Kat herself is now able to create/destroy life, timelines and space.
What's not to love about that?

I think that was just hope or intuition.
She doesn't know what the birds are, yet.

So does this have implications for Jones as well? Or because she isn't a robot she probably won't be involved in Kat's time travel shenanigans?

My guess: Kat is well aware of the darker implications (and complications) of this whole thing, and isn't at all pleased. She's clearly overwhelmed by what she's doing.

It is still a heck of responsibility to bear: to be able to manipulate time. Also, from her view I think it is less "saving" Annie, and more doing what your older self did to save Annie (except she is now that older self, time travel is complicated) and Annie has already been saved. I think that must be a weird feeling to realize you already did something huge without knowing you did.

She's never lost anyone she cares for.
The tic tocs have been watching over the court for centuries.
Temporal Affairs isn't gonna be happy.

I think that must be a weird feeling to realize you already did something huge without knowing you did. Or she probably already did it and has to bear the guilt of seeing Annie die 5 times before she got to loop the bird enough times to get the necessary lift to save her (she needed 6 birds). But then we will miss all the other stuff she would have already done with it since the beginning of the Court because that was where the Tic-Toc died (isn't it weird referring to it as a single bird?) so she probably didn't "save" Annie yet but know that at some point she will have to. Knowing that they're all the same bird we have to bear in mind that every time we see the Tic-Toc after Annie is saved is in the past of the bird's point of view.

Kat's been pushing through the pain, Peloton style, and one day that's going to push her straight through to robot godhood. From not being able to do enough to being able to do damn near anything she chooses
... Now, every story is not a trope, but usually apotheosis is a crucible or at the very least a trade that starts with someone not being enough. Apotheosis thoroughly activated. Also, if an illustration could cough loudly, this one would be positively pertussal.

You know, all Kat's desperate actions to save Annie from death really put Coyote's wish to experience death in perspective.

I count 6 of them in the panel 6 cutback. Given she specifically said 'they are all this same robot' would that mean there are at least 5 alternate timelines open? Or just one looping back on itself. Bird A calls the alarm and B-F appear. When Annie is safe, A-E go back in time to become B-F, and F dies.

I'm kinda hoping that it'll turn out that either the Tic-Toc or (perhaps more likely) Kat's own etheric form will turn out to have been Diego's inspiration for giving the Seraph robots wings.

Do we know for sure that *this* timeline's Kat made the Tic-Toc, and that she isn't talking about some other version of herself from another timeline? In www.gunnerkrigg.com/?p=2308, Kat said "I made a discovery..." followed by "I've been building something..." It seems plausible to me that the fact that she built it might *be* the discovery: she caught the Tic Toc, disassembled it, and realized from how it was made that she must have been the person who built it.
