More than a year ago, noted Gunnerkrigg forumite Daedalus ran a poll asking you which person in Gunnerkrigg Court was just the worst! A lot has changed in the Gunnerverse since the original poll, so I think it is time for an updated version. I have included every character from the original version, along with a few others. Your task, oh wise forumites, is simple: decide which resident of Gunnerkrigg Court or Gillitie Forest is the worst.

As has been mentioned a few times, I think Loup is the closest the comic's ever gotten to having an actual do-bad-things-for-no-real-reason villain. Every other character in this poll (that isn't a one-off in that they're offed after one chapter) is in some sort of gray area. The Court has all sorts of moral stains, but those in charge (or at least, some of the founders) feel/felt like they're doing good in the long run. Coyote would mess with people, but it'd all be pretty much planned out beforehand and, other than the incident with Ys in The Great Secret, no real risk or harm seemed to come of it. He even helped Annie out a few times, what with extending the medium invitation, teaching her how to lift things with her mind and getting her into the village at the start of that summer. Meanwhile Loup jumps right to gleefully wrecking shop and starts making demands and death threats at the first opportunity. also you forgot s13

I was all ready to vote for Tony since, as everyone probably knows, I don't like him. But I have to admit, his worst crime is being a jerk dad. C'mon, Diego murdered a woman by proxy and Hetty poisoned an innocent kid. It's gotta be them.

Given what he's done to the Forest himself, that may not be much of a defense - but it does suggest that there's some larger reason behind his attack on the Court, that he sees it as a threat.

Anthony is more tragic than evil, we probably all know people like him; making the wrong choices for (what they think) the right reasons. At least he tries to make amends.
Coyote is a trickster. He does both good and evil for entertainment, ours and his. No choice, he is what he is.
Loup may be an ass, but he has the excuse that he is mad, bonkers, loupy, unstable by (Coyote's?) design. Hetty is an evil spirit in a creepy doll's body, she has no more chance of redemption than Dracula or Cthulhu.
Diego on the other hand is a genius, who uses his talent to condemn the woman he loved (and her lover) to a horrible death and excruciating afterlife, and then, on his deathbed, blames someone else for his crimes. Of course: but Diego comes close.

I am surprised no one voted for Tony, given all the hate he has received on this forum in past times.
Also: Why is there no option to vote for the terrible Enigmarons and their Death Ray?

Their plan was foiled by a few meddling kids, and their death ray never even killed anyone. Clearly, they need remedial classes in villainy.

Given Sir Young was apparently the driving force behind the plot to secure the Annan by killing Jeanne, I'd personally rank him up just behind Diego. Young proooobably would have been open to just about any plan to secure the Annan, and Diego likely didn't say it didn't haaaave to be Jeanne (implied by his statement to her that "it didn't have to be this way"). The Founders who acquiesced to the plan are guilty by complicity in the crime, but it's Sir Young who drove the project along, and Diego who willfully condemned Jeanne. I wonder who it was that came up with the actual plan, Diego, Young, or someone else.

That implies that the specific plan was Diego's idea, although the request to come up with a plan may have come from Sir Young. Diego himself forcefully says, " It must be Jeanne. The plan will work with no one else," which--knowing what we know now--appears to be true; the plan was to shoot and imprison her lover and thereby trap her, so it wouldn't have worked with someone who didn't have a lover that could be shot. The fact that the plan required hurting Jeanne specifically--and Diego being the one who had a reason to want to hurt her--also points to Diego being the one who came up with the plan. Years later, he says of Young, " He forced me to devise the plan," but I don't place much trust in that as an honest description of how things happened.

I think Diego, Hetty and Coyote are the worst. Coyote doesn't seem to ge tany votes but the scene of hi mstealing the memroy from Ysengrin is one of the cruelest things I've seen in this comic, and that's in addition to how he treats Coyote or eve nAnnie all the other times. He laso knew that Ysengrin would most likely attack the Court if he had Coyote's strength, since he asked him multiple times about it. I think Jonathan Carver also counts for never telling Annie where her dad was just to bring him back so he could manipulate her emotionally (though I think even he didn't anticipate what a terrible dad Anthony would be).

It does raise the question: which is worse, doing something bad for selfish and mean reasons like jealousy and revenge (like Diego), or doing something bad for "good" reasons (like Sir Young and the other Founders, to protect the Court from the Forest)? And also: who had the worse deathbed scene, Diego, who was tormented by guilt but took the coward's way out and blamed Sir Young, or Sir Young, who showed no sign of recognition that he'd done anything wrong?

Man, for me it's a tough call between Diego and Hetty. I agree that Tony is probably more tragic than terrible. and he's getting better. I think Coyote and Loup fall under "I yam what I yam" category. I can't really fault them for being what they are. I don't know nearly enough about Llanwellyn to make that call. Not sure why Muut is on there unless to represent all the psychopomps who manipulated a girl into selling her soul. And yeah, Sir Young did something terrible with good intentions, so the road to Hell and all...so he is up there. but it seems to me Diego chose Jeanne out of spite and Hetty hurt (and implied lead to the death of) children. Children. Hetty gets my vote.

Hmm, looking at the previous poll I voted Tony last time, but I don't feel that way anymore, perhaps due to how much we have learned about him since then. He is still a horrible father, but at least we see some of the reasons behind his actions and just see him as a sad figure now.
Loup seems the most destructive character so far, but I still believe that Loup's whole existance and aims are fed by Coyote's original plan. Coyote was forcing Ysengrin to do horrible things and then stealing his memories for a reason, and I still think that that reason was Loup, or at least some sort of aim in that direction. Coyote didn't want Renard back because he was his "friend", he just wanted his body stealing powers back, the same as Loup does. Loup is just a means to an end for Coyote.
Coyote is the worst by far, laughing in your face while stabbing you in the back, and face, and your friends too.

Children. Hetty gets my vote. I have to admit, considering just the facts, Hetty really does seem like the worst. She attempted to murder and torture small children for purely selfish reasons, enthusiastically gave a rationalization for it that somehow managed to be EVEN MORE out of touch with reality than Diego's "She died and we did nothing", and never showed the slightest hint of regret for her crimes (at least Diego seemed kind of sad about it at the end). Finally, the sole redeeming quality she had was being friends with Renardine, and unintentionally helping him confront his guilt and shame. In contrast, Diego actually created and fostered the entire community of Gunnerkrigg robots, and made incredible advances in etheric technology that continue to inspire people like Kat today. I'm not sure he really gets enough credit for that!
The only reason Hetty's in third place right now is because she only showed up for one chapter, and died in a very satisfying way at the end of it. That makes for a lot less of an emotional impact for us, but it doesn't actually change how downright nasty her character is. I'm going with Hetty.

Also: Why is there no option to vote for the terrible Enigmarons and their Death Ray? The Enigmarons, alas, fall far short of the superlative standard we expect from "the worst." Their plan was foiled by a few meddling kids, and their death ray never even killed anyone. Clearly, they need remedial classes in villainy. Hm. Fair enough. But, speaking of terrible, what about Boxbot?

Really, this poll should be titled "Who is the second-worst?" I find this poll's lack of Boxbot... disturbing. Well if I included him no one would select any other option. That clearly would be sub-optimal. On the other hand, if we're measuring villainy, then Boxbot has never killed anyone either... ... as far as we know...

If Hetty had been more fleshed out I might have voted for her. As dangerous as she was to that one family she was haunting (or whatever you'd call it) she simply didn't have much significance to the overall plot. She was just a bug, driven by instinct and shallow motives. I suspect she had little understanding of the impact of what she was doing or why she was doing it.

The only reason I didn't choose Hetty is because she was a monster of the week that had little relevance to the overall plot. We still haven't seen what Loup's true motives are, so I'm withholding judgment on him as The Worst™. Diego, on the other hand, reacted out of bitterness and rage. And it wasn't a spur of the moment decision--he spent weeks, possibly months, planning to bind Jeanne to river. The woman he supposedly loved. Sure, he was repentant on his deathbed, but that does not excuse his actions. (See also: Severus Snape) Diego continues to be the most reprehensible character in the comic.
There's a whole essay about men feeling obligated to own women as a possession somewhere in Diego's character

Sure, he was repentant on his deathbed, but that does not excuse his actions. And I still wonder if it's true repentance if you blame it all on someone else rather than accepting responsibility for your crimes.

Diego was bitter and cruel, Young just flat cold.
