A doggo! But! Is he a goodboy? I don't think so. Will he need spankies? Perhaps. But then, if we train him to not kill all humans...he gets treats!

Uh huh. This is the first time in the entire comic I've wished I could hear the enunciation to know how he means it. The worst bit is, if Coyote was still around he'd find this Ys-hybrid falling romantically head over heels for Annie completely hilarious. ugh.

It’s astonishing how this is the first time, after two-thousand pages of comic, where her being in the Forest has resulted in an interaction that’s set off my stranger-danger alarms. Surely they should’ve gone off many times by now, all things considered. Killer job on the word choice, Tom. I’m freaked out.

Really though, it's likely Coyote's influence here that's making Ys speak this way. I'm suitably weirded out. Well done, Tom (no sarcasm intended). Edit: what avurai said.

Didn't Jones once say that Ysengrin was on the edge of insanity? Well, seems he's over the edge now. That's a seriously scary look

Looks like the reality of the possibility of something bad happening to her has set in. Well, she thought she was meeting with her friend Ysengrin. He may have been a crazy god, but at least he was a known quantity. She knew what to expect from Ysengrin, the good and the bad. Coyote was also a crazy god, but he'd promised her protection. Whatever else he might plot, she knew he wouldn't hurt her. Now she's got to deal with some new merged creature who is also a crazy god, but not one she knows how to deal with, and all her protectors are gone. That was *so* not the plan.

Maybe this is the result of a warped love for Antimony from Ysengrin?
Either way, get your pepper spray, Annie.

The guy put his nose under Annie's skirt when she was... what? Eleven? And this "Antimony, my love" looks more like a way to unsettle her than a genuine expression of sentiment.

Hmm. Some combination of Ysengrin's high regard for Annie and Coyote's irreverence?

I was thinking more along the lines of a more "family" love than an actual love.
And then it being warped by Coyote's influence and Ysengrin's own decent into madness.

Probably wise. Might provoke a quick withdrawal of "crazed face" and a faux-hurt "aaww, did I scare you? Little ol' me? '.

Crazy is difficult for sane people to understand, young people in particular. Violent crazy is even more difficult to understand. I think she clearly knew he was crazy on an intellectual level. I'm less sure that she understood the ramifications of crazy, perhaps rationalizing what happened when she was attacked as him not being himself. By The Way: Reality is subjective in the Gunnerverse but even In Real Life some people's reality is more subjective than others. For example... Ever been the last person to know you were dating someone? Spent some time hanging out with them, maybe had some good conversations and some fun platonic times, then they get the wrong idea and start telling people that the two of you are a couple?

It's the craziness of Coyote, mixed with the twisted love and powerhunger of Ysengrin! Nothing bad could happen with that! Do the two totems mean Ysengrin managed to pull his own "souls" out of the material realm and purely into the ether? That WAS a trick only Coyote knew...

This "my love" business is more Coyote than Ys, but isn't quite.
There's a suspicion that Coyote was well aware of the likely outcome of his latest trick. I wonder if the old dog threw in a few false, romantic, memories in to the mix for a bit of fun?

By no means should we take this "my love" schtick seriously at first. I mean, the dynamic it presents to Antimony is fraught with danger, but his motivations can't be gleaned from this.
I'm pretty sure he's targeting Antimony for his rhetoric because she's incredibly vulnerable to the prospect that this is all because of her, that her existence is a focal point, a point of obsession that ruins lives. If the god of the forest is going to do what I think he wants to do, use the totems to create a human form to sneak behind enemy lines and wipe them out, masking it as an imitation of Renard's "I'm human now, love me Surma!" scheme would leave grave emotional wounds in Annie.

That would give the look he gave before sending up the forest signal a lot more weight. I think you're onto something here.

a) The forest feels so... dead. I hope the inhabitants are just hiding, and not "reengineered", or something. b) Second half of today's page is the ether. Compared to this Coyote/Ys/whoever-he-is-now looks like an effing clown.

"My pl-"
"Neither!"
(Maybe "my love" is just one of those things with no lewd connotations in the Englands.)

Little ol' me? '. While that would be wise, I thought that's just been the representation of her hair in the ether ever since she reconnected with her fire elemental side. You see it ever so slightly here as she's working with Rey, and it shows more and more later on in the chapter as she's "getting her groove back": www.gunnerkrigg.com/?p=1620'Cause I don't think she's about to pick a fight with the fairies here: www.gunnerkrigg.com/?p=1671

I hadn't noticed that before. Hmmm... comment partly invalidated. So.. she goes into the ether (re: foresterr) to better find Ysen-thing, and he jumps out of the totem to spook her with a "boo!" I'm still betting he will withdraw his "crazed" expression (presented here just for its unsettling effect, and because: fun! ) in the upcoming page. minor puzzle: why does Annie have so much loose hair in panel 4? Its mostly tied back in the bun, with the few strands left on that side bound in a hairclip. Its all back to normal in the next panel...

PS: Whatever the merged thing has become, it extracted both Coyote and Ysengrin souls from itself and became its own being
