The more I think on this, the more aggravated I'm getting at Kat. Setting someone up with someone else without warning one of them is already a major no-no. (Heck, I myself am annoyed any time someone tries doing it with me even when both me and the lady are informed beforehand. It creates a seriously awkward situation and expectations). Doing it while she KNOWS Annie's mental state is seriously messed up? Potentially putting her on the spot in front of her entire friend group the FIRST time she's been able to see them since start of term? Gahhh. Seriously, what the *fuck*, Kat? No need for language, but I agree. I am assuming Kat's plan at least makes a bit of sense, so there must be an aspect we're missing Point on the language. This kind of thing just riles me up. Past experience with (somewhat) similar situations. Kat may be punking Reynard and William. . . She knows Reynard has a dad streak a mile wide, and she and Winsbury seem to have the kind of relationship where they one-up each other. . . notice that Winsury has no idea that Rey is giving him the death glare. . . you'd think he'd know enough to get on Rey's good side if he were going to ask Annie to be his girlfriend. . . . ~FS Also, on the previous page, we see that Janet came along too. Unless something really odd is going on, William's not going to ask Annie out if he's still in a relationship, so if W+J's ship has already sank, the parting was amicable enough that Janet's still willing to hang around him. Whatever the plan is, Paz is in on it and supportive of it, from that look. And whether it's a prank on Rey's still a pretty terrible idea due to how serious Rey takes Annie's well-being. Triply so due to the current situation. Unless there's a LOT more to it, and every aspect of that is Einstein levels of brilliant, nothing about this is a good idea.

Hmmmmmmm. . . .just reread page 1597. . . When Kat annd Paz talks about everyone in class missing Annie, Paz says: "Even William, he talks about her often." Eeeeeeeee. . . Whatever is happening here will be awkward. . .

Kat may be thinking it would be good for Annie to know that there are people out there thinking of her that way, even is she has no interest in the relationship. In a normal case, a friend would be poking gently with the information and watch out for the reaction, but when Kat tried that, Annie didn't believe her. I didin't believe her myself, so...
I'm not quite sure how she might react. Maybe she'll just go "oh". I certainly hope Winsbury is not planning on a public declaration. But then again, we're talking about the emotional intelligence of a bunch of 15 years old. Yeah, this has the potential of exploding, and Kat seem totally oblivious to that eventuality.
I have no idea where Tom is going with this.

I'd say there is some ulterior motive here, by someone (either Kat's, for whatever reason, or Winsbury's, to throw off further suspicion). No idea what it is, but Winsbury and Janet looked way too comfortable with each other on the previous page to have broken up, for my taste. Let's wait and see, and Tom'll elucidate us, as always. Also: new avatar! That flashback to Winsbury's and Janet's fabrications was just too tempting, and I had to get rid of that bland Peanuts one at some point.

In those Victorian novels Janet reads, this is a setup for "No one must know about our secret marriage, but the young Master of Whatzit is being harassed by his father and mother Lord and Lady Whatzit to show more interest in debutantes than in [pick one: horses, dogs, gambling, "bookish pursuits"], and highly-perfumed, mincing Prince Bloggs is showing an unhealthy interest in him, and my father the Squire is beginning to wonder why I spend so much time with Lady Whatzit, so we are desperate to throw them all off the scent, so my lover will show a false interest in bluestocking Miss Unlikely, knowing she'll have none of him". I think this is starting to give me bad flashbacks to the scene where the young Valkyrie "asks out" Anthony. I really hope we get a good dose of "not clones of our parents" in this chapter. When I read this page I was absolutely sure it was this. ↑ The headmaster is starting to catch on to Winsbury and Janet spending time together. The whole group of friends must know they like each other by now, so they got together and decided that Annie as the only non-attached girl must be publicly declared Winsbury's girlfriend so that all the parents are thrown off track. I really don't see any other possibility given the people involved.

The young Valkyrie refrained to ask Tony outright, settling for insistent flirting instead, out of some gender based misconception that saying the actual words is a guys' job. Winsbury I'm sure will be more straightforward. When I read this page I was absolutely sure it was this. ↑ The headmaster is starting to catch on to Winsbury and Janet spending time together. I really don't see any other possibility given the people involved. That theroy I do not believe for one minute. Using Annie that way would be very cruel even if she wasn't aleady in the middle of an emotional breakdown, and those guys aren't cruel.

Oh, I don't think it's funny at all, despite my sarcastic sendup of Victorian novels I feel sure that if young William was really that interested in Annie, Kat would have broached the subject to Annie in private by now. The only possible upside to this is the far-fetched idea that the plan will serve the double purpose of diverting attention from William/Janet and giving Annie an excuse to "get out of the house". A perfect scheme, except for the fact that next to Anthony's inevitable stroke/having kittens/calling forth Cthulhu reaction, the Headmaster's disapproval will seem like a mild, "are you really sure about this". Eh, even Kat's not that dim. I think she's taking the piss out of Rey.

I think Winsbury has genuine feelings for Antimony. You can see it in his expressions, e.g. his outrage at Anthony's treatment of Antimony in class; the very tender look on page 1628. It's been at least a few months in-comic since Tony returned, yes? I think Winsbury must have broken things off with Janet when he realized he felt something for Antimony, or something similar.
I wouldn't be surprised if Antimony was trepidatious about dating, but accepted - it's a perfect way to reclaim some personal autonomy. A boyfriend would be good for Annie, as long as she doesn't submit to him or use him completely selfishly to strike back at her father. A balanced, positive and potentially loving relationship that offered her an opportunity to take control over her life would be perfect.
If anyone's going to be a problem (at least right now), I think it'll be Renard.

Wasn't there an ongoing joke about no one knowing about Winsbury and Janet dating? I'm like 40% sure this is either Kat joking around or mistaking what Winsbury said sometime earlier off-panel.

But you know, I didn't really see this idea as cruel. If everybody asks Annie to help them out for the sake of true love. I wasnt imagining anyone using Annie as a ignorant pawn.

Eh, even Kat's not that dim. I think she's taking the piss out of Rey. Which would in turn, make her that dim. Poking Rey on this subject at this time would be really incredibly dumb. Oh, I still think you're crazy. It's just that apparently you and Kat are on the same drugs, is all.

Also 8 minutes in and no topic? Tsk! sorry, i was busy bingeing Darker than Black... Of all the updates to sleep through.. though that the dental pain is going away enough that I'm actually able to fall asleep again is nice I guessI've only skimmed the thread so far after waking up ~15m ago, but I'm going with what was said first page about this seeming fishy. Completely out of the blue, almost feels like taking advantage of a moment/time of weakness. And what of Janet, secret-ish relationship with the headmaster's daughter? Is this a coverup, or will we get updates on off-panel activity (breakup?) in the next few pages? Could this be something planned by old head Johnathan to keep an eye on Annie or something? I don't doubt that Winsbury's cleaned up his act re: bullying, and it does seem like he's been going above and beyond with the card and stuff, it's just.. iunno.

Here she realises they are being nice again, if Winsbury asks her out she is just going to think it is all one big joke they are playing on here again... Then again, that scene at the end of Love Boat when she is alone and everyone else is hugging a partner... maybe she would be interested in something. I'm recalling a forum thread from back in Microsat 5 where the "it's basically a disaster when a cute girl likes you" line was ripped apart when thrown around casually. It makes sense that that interpretation/situation would be able to go both ways, especially for someone with Annie's psyche and situation. She herself does seem to have improved a long way from "they think I'm an idiot" as well, but it still feels iffy. *wonders if Lindsey's still available to Annie for counseling services

Why all those conspiracy theories? How many of you are still with your first love? I think Winsbury has genuine feelings for Antimony. You can see it in his expressions, e.g. his outrage at Anthony's treatment of Antimony in class; the very tender look on page 1628. I guess you are right, and maybe he always had a soft spot for Annie. Here is the undeniable proof. Now compare: (comic book logic) Somehow I can't believe that anger from the chapter icon will be directed at Winsbury. Lots of cookies!

My ad hoc theory is... this is some kind of a ruse, to get Annie adopted, or get citizenship, or something. To get her out from her dad's impassive grasp. Makes sense, right guys? Right? ?!?

I suspect Kat is just punking Rey.
Or this is the latest stage of Winsbury and Janet's cover story and they want Annie involved thinking it will get her out of her shell. Given what we now know of the Court surveillance, it is pretty obvious that this relationship could not actually possibly still be secret from Janet's dad Frankenstein's Headmonster.

People who don't really think the other kids don't know, don't know Gunnerkrigg's humor. All this is going to be is a humorous setup for Renard acting pissed at Winsbury and Winsbury not knowing what the heck is going on.

does this lead to: Rey loses another red-haired fire-lady to the love of someone else? (*maybe* in a fatherly way this time, but still?) Annie begins to parallel Jeanne - and falls for a "child of the forest"? (from previous speculation on Winsbury's origins..) the chapter gets quite interesting...
