It seems, in the rest of that talk not much interesting happened. Now, Annie can have some words with Jones, and Mort.

Can someone explain why Smit and Mortimer glare at each other whenever they're shaking hands?

because they are guys and that is how guys shake hands: firm, manly, and with spite and ire

I think Mort is also poking fun at Smith's serious expression as well.

Can someone explain why Smit and Mortimer glare at each other whenever they're shaking hands? They're not. Seriously, watch any two blokes who don't know each other being introduced. This is it. Though Headwired may be right in saying Mort is taking the piss. (",) Also: Mort in the last panel. "Shucks, that'd be neat"? That boy's no Englishman, to speak in such a way! (Well, neither am I, so... ",)

So Mort's full name is Mortimer. (That means he isn't Martin after all. One wild speculation of mine exploded.)
I continue to feel sorry for Smith, being pushed around by Parley like that. (Though, with Parley on her way, Annie's likely to learn more from Jones without all those interruptions. Parley reminds me of a passage in Tolstoy's "War and Peace" about a nut that has somehow gotten into a machine and rattles about in it, making a lot of noise and drawing a great deal of attention to itself, but doing nothing to help the machine's processes and much to hinder them.)

I can't say for sure how Andrew feels, but when I was his age, I would have died to have that kind of attention from a girl. Way to go Smitty!

Is it just me, or does it look like the chapter is ending?
Also, I'm with Mezzaphor, at Smitty's age I would to have killed for (hah, small difference) that kind of attention from a girl. They kinda look cute together.

I don't think smith's that bothered by Parley pushing him around, i don't think he takes it too seriously, and i think he kinda enjoys it. Not just in a "attention from a girl" kinda way, but he seems pretty nonchalant about most things, so i think Parely taking charge gives him some direction.

They are friends now. Annie must have smoothed over any differences they might have had. She should get some sort of job doing that...

I wonder if there is a job that involves helping relationships between the court and being from the ether.

I like how Mort mimics the expression of whoever he says goodbye to.

Shucks. Mort, you have made me love you all over again. XD
Is... Parley purposely stealing Smit to give Jones and Annie some private time? Hm...

This hallway looks a LOT like the hallway we originally met Mort in. That, the writing on the door, and certain comments made by characters here and in the past, suggest to me that every time we have seen Mort it has been near this room, and that he is in fact confined to that area. Perhaps Mort died in that classroom?

I think Parley is trying to mimic Mort's expression, not the other way around.
And if Parley is like any other female I know (including myself), she a. Likes food, and b. Wants somebody to accompany her basically everywhere.

Perhaps Mort died in that classroom? Interesting theory. I do agree that this is almost certainly the same hallway from ch 4 (and the same room from ch 9). However, Tom has said that Mort wasn't a Gunnerkrigg student, and that he's in the Court because that's where he's stationed.

You need not be a student in a particular school to die in one of their classrooms (granted, being a student makes it easier).
I wonder who decides where ghosts are stationed, and how.

Jones and Mort seem to speak on a peer basis. Or at least acquantance. He refers to her as Jones casually. Not as an underling or as someone would refer to a senior or elder. So they'e had past dealing before and the relations are about the same as between any other staff member of court.

Or maybe Jones just asked him to call her that.

Throughout this chapter, Jones has been amazingly tolerant of Parley's behavior. Parley frequently interrupts the class (even delays its beginning by urging Eglamore and Jones to have a practice match), and yet Jones never chides or disciplines her for it - or even shows a hint of disapproval. It's certainly unusual for a teacher (a clearly capable and orderly teacher) to respond towards a disruptive student that way. I wonder if this is one more facet of the mysteries surrounding her - that she has some hidden reason at work here.

Or maybe Jones just asked him to call her that. that seems a little more likely, since Jones asked Annie to also just call her Jones, rather than Miss Jones.

Seeing how there was very little talk, what was the purpose of the meeting, do you think? To expose Parley and Smith to Ethereal creatures? To see how they would interact with such creatures? I don't think Anny gained anything from the meeting, nor did Jones learn anything new about her through the meeting. (Except maybe that she is friends with Mort, but she already knew that Anny is friendly with many ethereal beings)

well, just because we didn't see them talking doesn't mean that they didn't. Its probably likely that they were in there talking for awhile, and we just didn't see all of what went on, because really, that would have just taken way to much time. From what we can see, something did happen, considering they all pretty much walked away from the meeting as friends (well, Parley and Smith, since Annie was already friends with Mort, and Jones is pretty much neutral.)

unlikely that jones asked, even then it implies a casual peer type relation
