I wonder. Is Fire Annie tagging along into the forest, or still stuck to the ceiling?

What about the pituitary gland? (<- Honest question.) The idea is that gender is more of a mental construct than anything to do with a person's biology. Sex is biological, gender is something you decide for yourself. For most people the two coincide, but sometimes they don't, and when they don't the distinction between the two becomes important for a variety of purposes. There are practical, often medical reasons why you might need to know someone's sex. Sex is just an immutable quality that each person has, but gender is the kind of thing where you're supposed to take a person at their word. Unfortunately, misconceptions and the traditional conflation of gender & sex lead to a lot of discrimination against people who have chosen a gender different from their sex, aka trans-people. Unfortunately we live in an imperfect world, so we still get a lot of institutional and personal bias coming from people who don't (or, in my opinion, refuse) to understand the distinction. Embracing the distinction is a small way to give people a basic level of respect. No, I got what the idea was, but how does the phrase 'Sex is between your legs, gender is between your ears' work when the pituitary gland is 'between your ears' but is responsible for, among other things, the development of breast milk (which is another hit to that saying, as breast milk is not something that originates from between your legs but while it can happen in males it is a function of the female sex) stimulates maturation of ovarian follicles in the ovaries in women, stimulates maturation of seminiferous tubules in men, stimulates spermatogenesis in men, stimulates production of androgen-binding protein from Sertoli cells of the testes in men, stimulates ovulation in women, stimulates the formation of corpus luteum in women and stimulates testosterone synthesis from Ledig cells in men? Also I wouldn't describe sex (as you're describing it) as immutable. There are a fair amount of different shades of gray there.

[awkwardness intensifies] Someone let me in on the joke? I'm guessing "O-kay..." meant TMI to some extent. Personally I don't really mind, but your explanation was a little bit franker than anticipated. No big deal either way *crosses fingers and crouches behind a rock, hoping nobody gets out a flamethrower* Ovaries. That's a very funny word for little boys. I guess. are you snappy-one-linering me? Because that looked like a snappy-one-liner. (Also mostly incorrect, it was Speedwell's second post that smjjames reacted to.)

I wasn't familiar with the expression. As so often I meant well ( I thought your and smjjames' reactions were a bit unfair), but that is of no value if it is understood differently. I guess I offended enough people this year. Quite often people I actually like. Really? I wouldn't have guessed. I didn't notice anything odd about it. We probably have different ideas about TMI and how to react (or not).

No flamethrower. I guess I'm destined to be one of those outspoken old bats Having had no idea that the word "speedwell" had any special meaning whatsoever prior to today, let alone a sexual one, I am pretty sure that the sudden exploration of it as either "I want to hit that" or "My body yearns to be made preggers NAO" was full of the potential for awkwardness for some. By way of comparison, if a dude here reacted to a post with Jones in it by saying "I want to hit that" (as opposed to "Eglamore's so lucky" or "wow, she's beautiful" or something else less raw in overt sexuality), it would be kinda awkward. And if a dude reacted to pictures of cute kids or small animals by posting "Dang, now I'm feeling urges to impregnate my wife" ... well, it would be kinda awkward, and might elicit a similar response

A word of explanation... the way I reacted is not different from someone seeing a picture of an especially appealing little baby, and thinking, "gee, that makes me want one", haha. Anyone who sees anything more sexual than that in it needs to recalibrate their sensitivity.

I dunno about that... the level of enthusiasm, gusto, and your particular word choice made it way way more intense than "gee, that makes me want one" ever possibly could. (For the record, I understood it merely as that from the get-go, I just also totally understand why the intensity of the way you worded it might make others feel a tad weirded out).

In my experience, as regards Love, many dudes by default reflexively take the Wise Words of The Prophet Paula Abdul to heart: "I don't mean to make demands / But the Word and the Deed go hand in hand." Having cute wee ones most often requires the Act that creates new cute wee ones. The median dude doesn't find that to be a Two Step Process to walk through, but rather an inherent and entirely pleasurable part of "wanting to have cute wee ones".

Eh, I dunno if it's just a "dude" thing. Or even a sex thing. I showed the convo to my girlfriend after reading you post here, and she described Speedwell's comment as "oddly intense", so... It's just an intense way of saying it, I feel.

I can see that. I think someone going "squeeeekawaiii!!!!11!!!!" is a bit overdone, to be sure.
