Anyone still on the 'It's all a dream' train? Because it just hit a full stop, and I worry that someone might've fallen over and hurt themselves.

^Personally abandoned that theory a while back. Glad Tom hasn't used that literary device on something like this... but at the same time, a part of me really wished he had. Hah!

I'm a bit curious of Tom's annotation:
"This has been an important chapter and something that we've been anticipating in the comic for a long time."
Whom're the "we" in the sentence?

Oh lord, I've been fearing what note the last page of the chapter would end on, wondering what the very last page would show.
And now it's going to be the next update, and there are so many things I'm not wanting to see on that page.
Indeed though, this has been a very significant development. How many pages has this one clocked in at?
Also it's kinda heartening, I guess, that some of her classmates had assembled to see her off. Maybe visitors can be a thing, if daddy dearest allows it.

Year 10 biology is going to be SO awkward. I imagine they were going to dislike him as a teacher anyway, but now they'll just hate him.
Still not getting the apple on the chapter's title page. "Doesn't fall far from..." doesn't seem to fit too well. Maybe, the bonus page will enlighten. Or it will be the Joey and Chandler bots grieving over the loss of their new roommate.

The Tree
Symbolism aside, I could think of several different ways to clue in the fact that Annie was about to meet her dad for the first time in... oh, 3 years?

I have a feeling just about every conceivable surface will soon be copiously tack'd with the intent of wreaking wrath on his backside.

If there hadn't been 50 chapters of top-notch storytelling prior to this, this chapter would have been the one where I dropped the comic like a hot rock. As it stands, I am willing to give Tom the time needed to explain to the readers why this sudden change in direction is both warranted and necessary.
And Kat's parents have a lot of explaining to do on their own behalf. There's "tough love" to get a problem child back on course, and then there's what happened here, which doubled-down on the "tough" and completely omitted the "love". If Kat's parents aren't uncomfortable and abashed about how things went down here or if they had anything to do with Antimony being blindsided, they need to have their own reckoning.
I can't imagine Zimmy will stay on the sidelines for too long either, even if it means that she has to face Kat again. Zimmy loves to smash spiders, and Anthony is the perfect human embodiment. And I doubt Coyote will feel too sanguine about his medium being taken away, or his cousin being under the thumb of Anthony Carver.

"This has been an important chapter and something that we've been anticipating in the comic for a long time." I... what? Does he just mean her dad returning? That was specifically going to happen about 2 comic years after the end of the first book, yet it's probably the least important thing that happened this chapter, and I certainly wasn't expecting any of that other stuff. The fact that Annie cheated on homework was a shoe that hadn't dropped yet, but, jeez, I didn't realize it was the size of her lunar fingerprint. I'm just kind of baffled right now. Her dad returns, we find out why we knew so little about him previously (because he's become a terrible person, and his family and friends are apparently in denial). Annie can't really process his ruining everything, so Kat gets upset for her and then... nothing happens? Are they even going to do anything about Reynardine? It doesn't seem like it. So far their sole act of rebellion is a danged walkie-talkie. That's it? End chapter? ...okay. Basically, I can't process this either anymore. Not at standard webcomic-update pace, anyway. Every page is making me feel detached and/or angry, my two least favorite emotions. Unless something crazy happens in the bonus page, I think I'm gonna have to leave for a few months and get caught up after another chapter or two is out. I hate to say that, because even though I don't post too often I've followed the comic pretty continuously since the date of this exact page. I don't have that bookmarked, I remember it. So... y'know. I'll come back, for sure. I just hope something different has happened by then.

And so a sad chapter draws to a close. The saddest chapter. Such a melancholy ending to it. I honestly don't know what to expect from the next (all I know is I want it yesterday). I wonder if the arrival of the others is by chance, or whether they came looking for Annie?* Either way the wall of solidarity is a strong reminder of the progress Annie has made, and is now leaving behind. Without a word. They may not all be besties, but there's respect there. They clearly care about her. *They don't have their backpacks, so I'm thinking it's the latter. I'm a bit curious of Tom's annotation: "This has been an important chapter and something that we've been anticipating in the comic for a long time." Whom're the "we" in the sentence? It'd include me. I know two things I'd been anticipating for a long time - Anthony's return and Annie's cheating issue coming to a head - both occurred. They just occurred in a way that hurt much more than I was anticipating.Course Tom could also be referring to Annie's haircut, which also proved a sad development. I hope that Mr. Carver isn't too attached to the idea of sitting down. I have a feeling just about every conceivable surface will soon be copiously tack'd with the intent of wreaking wrath on his backside. He'll probably be lucky if that's the only thing he has to be on the lookout for. The dangers of getting on the wrong side of an entire class of gifted children. Kat'll going to develop a robot chair with retractable tacks for just that purpose.

They may just be arriving back home after classes. That's what I wondered too, but then I noticed none have backpacks or class stuff with them (unlike Kat when she returned in a hurry). They must have already dropped that stuff off, before heading out again. Which I think makes it more likely they're there intentionally to see Annie off. But then again they didn't know she was being moved either (so word spreads fast if that's the case), so maybe it was just luck.

While I understand the feeling behind the post (I want to see Anthony Carver face Ysengrin for what he did to Annie) I think talking about dropping the comic because of this chapter is a bit too hasty a reaction. While the subject matter of the chapter itself is heartwrenching and difficult to handle it's not by any means down to a soddy work by Tom. I don't think anyone could accusee him of using cheap thrills, moreover the presentation of each page is fully realised with interesting details. So no drop in quality IMO. What bugs me about this chapter is the scarcity of details story wise. We've seen no other adults around. No other powers that can influence the river of happenings. We have no idea whether the Donlans know or not. And the same goes for Zimmy and the others. There have been points in the chapter where I'd go call Jones myself if I could Erm yes. Annie is in a hard spot but I have faith in Tom, making this work out in a well thought way. (Still want Ysengrin explaining to Anthony how you show repec' )

Not the archive image, he means the actual page: www.gunnerkrigg.com/?p=1486Obviously they're always unique images that never specifically appear in the chapter, but is possibly the first time the chapter image has been entirely symbolic.

Had I known this chapter was coming, I would have waited and queued up two chapters to read in an afternoon, it would be much less painful that way. Unless something worse is up ahead.

I said a few pages ago that I thought this would eventually be compelling storytelling, but that it isn't working for me in real-time, with three updates a week. This ending really embodies that. Disappointing close to a disappointing and unsatisfying chapter. Bleh.
