LAUGHING ON LINE Robot mafia. That'd be pretty funny. XD After Kat's glare I could almost see it being a reality.
I will admit Annie is pretty lucky in some ways. Multiple times now she has managed to evade death. Almost as if...
No. It's too crazy to be true.
It's too silly to think that Surma is helping her in some way! "I will never send you into danger." I can't remember what the actual quote was. ._.
Edit: I really want to see Eglamore's and Renard's reactions too.

I'm STILL waiting for Anthony to say something like "and now listen carefully, because i don't have much time". I mean... look, he even did everything to make sure no one- even Kat- is listening!

I still don't think this is a nightmare, but now I sorta hope it is. Just 'cause it's kind of a sweet thought that not even in Annie's worst nightmares would Kat turn her back on her. Anywho, I also suspect that Anthony will be making a proposition next page. Or if not that, SOMETHING will end up happening to fix this. Annie's a very lucky girl. Not many people could say "Half the people I know could reverse this decision easily, and the other half are just plainly more powerful than you" regarding their fathers. We really do not know who can reverse this or how powerful Anthony is. Do you think the headmaster is on Annie's side? I don't. Perhaps not, but Annie happens to be the forest medium. If Coyote should decide he doesn't want his medium delayed a year longer than expected, it's going to cause problems. Then there's Jones, whose fondness for Annie is second only to Eglamore out of all the known characters in the comic. If Jones should make a decision, she is unique in that there's really no way to stop her. And speaking of the headmaster, he may not like Annie, but holding Annie back when she has a very stable job waiting for her, especially one that won't likely require any of the knowledge she's missing and is necessary for the relations of the entire Court, will only cause problems. And given what particular job it is, I doubt it's a sacrifice anyone is willing to make. It was already said the Court knew about her cheating but did nothing. Why should they? Why should anyone care if she's cheating or failing? Regardless of Anthony's intentions, whether he's looking to get his daughter back on track or just being a jerk, his decision alone is not going to be enough.

That there is a look that says "you've made a powerful enemy today, Mr. Carver". If I was Anthony's ear in that last panel I'd probably be saying "Ooooo, I have a bad feeling about this". Next time, when geniuses collide.... I really want to see Renard and eglamore's reaction to all this. I want to see everyone's reaction, but those two are definitely high on the list. Especially as Rey knows about the cheating, and they've had words on the subject - he clearly isn't thinking the same thing on it as Anthony.

Come to think of it, Kat could get Anthony killed without even intending to, just by making a random comment to Robot, or seeming distracted by this from her angelic work. That old "it was worth it" thing, y'know. "Who will rid me of this meddlesome man?" While all the other robots are pondering the meaning and implications of the Angel's words, Boxbot doesn't hesitate... Boxbot as the hero, that would be appropriate for April Fool's Day!

Regardless of Anthony's intentions, whether he's looking to get his daughter back on track or just being a jerk, his decision alone is not going to be enough. He said he has "arranged" it. I'm sure he already has the approval of the Court on this one. Jones is unlikely to forcefully interfere with such a decision. She may try to use her influence to protect Annie but she is unlikely to threaten or squash anyone over it. Coyote already has his medium. Why should he care if she's in year 9 and not 10? Won't prevent her to come to the forest. I think he'd probably be amused. The only question for me is what the other adults will do. Possibly Donald might be able to do something, because he's Anthony's friend. But even he hasn't seen him in a long time.

Today's update reminded me how little me mum approved of any of my friends who were any fun k-12 and beyond. I'm guessing that in that last panel ol' Anthony is weighing how much of an obstacle Kat will be to his daughter's rehabilitation... and wondering if he needs to do more than what he already planned.

I wonder if Annie might start absconding to the forest more often out of frustration (there was a reason she decided to cheat) among other things. Like she can't even see Kat that often from here on out, especially if she's moved back to the previous year's dorms.

I doubt that *Tom* will allow the situation to go on for long, since Anthony's sentence means too many problems for the story. Annie would have to be transferred to a class full of new characters who'd need to be given names and characterizations - while the original classmates (including Kat) would now be compelled to be almost always off-stage. Not to mention that, under Anthony's new regime, it's unlikely that Annie will be allowed to do anything other than study - which means that the variety of stories and story-threads will now be unusable.
The only solution, short of undoing this, would be to temporarily drop Annie from "Gunnerkrigg Court" and have Kat be promoted to full-protagonist, with Paz becoming the new etheric girl in the partnership - and even that would be awkward.
Short of Tom not thinking out the implications before he wrote these past few pages (and then realizing that he's written himself into a corner - but too late for that), I think that, from the point of view of story-necessity, this state of affairs won't last.

Kat's expression is Odium. Odium is an interesting emotion. It is the pungent mixture of disgust and hate. It leaves your gut twisted, heart pounding, and your mouth with a foul taste. Like all of the more "irrational" emotions, it can be very dangerous. Yet, sometimes deserved. It's a shame that Tom didn't have done a April fool day. Like Anne doing anything in flam and last strip with what have I doing. Or the robots coming in and attack Anthony. Or Zimmy saying have I slam you again. Or...... If Tom had set up this whole chapter to be an April's Fools joke, I would have laughed till my spleen fell out.

"April Fool's, I'm not Mr. Carver at all!" And then he takes off his costume and it's Mort.

That old "it was worth it" thing, y'know. I'm not sure. Have we ever actually seen any of the robots get violent with an actual human before? I can't remember. To be honest Robot seems like the only potential candidate for this theory ("you gave me a choice.") Yes, we have.

If this doesn't get turned around somehow on the next page, then all hope is lost.
Either way, next page is probably going to be more unfeeling poker face.

I hope she continues eavesdropping. I'm not sure. Have we ever actually seen any of the robots get violent with an actual human before? I can't remember. To be honest Robot seems like the only potential candidate for this theory ("you gave me a choice.") Oo, you are likely right about the other robots having limits that would prevent them actually hurting a human, but Robot potentially not. Maybe I should say rather than 'killed' (other than by Robot, and then only in extremity - though who knows what that means to him anymore) that Anthony could be undermined, evicted, harassed, or caused all kinds of other problems in various surreptitious or overt ways. Can you live in the Court if no robot will do anything for you, or does it wrong, or does the opposite of what you asked? It might be difficult! though Anthony may be such a tough/embittered/pain-wracked/hate-filled/egocentric/objective-driven nut at this point that nothing at all will phase or swerve him short of being physically prevented from doing what he wants. Anthony will have plenty of robots to service him! And they will ALL be Boxbots.

Hello, everyone. First post. I wonder if the Court allows classes to be taken by Challenge Exam ? 'Cause that's what I would be pushing for if I were Kat. Okay, so Antimony failed every class she cheated in. That's fair. But since she's already sat those classes once, she should already know most of the material. So why sit the entire year if she can prove she knows the material well enough to pass? And she will, oh she will. Because Kat would (in my world) be sitting with her every night drilling her until it came out of her ears. Then she would challenge those classes, pass them, and move up to the next grade with her friends. There are a number of other things I would do as well, were I Kat. 1) Ask Antimony politely NEVER to do that again. Please. It hurts her more than anyone else, and it gives her father the right to give her grief. 2) See a lawyer and discover Antimony's options for a change of guardian, on the charges of child abandonment, neglect, verbal abuse, emotional abuse, and in general being a terrible human being. Foster parents would be a step up. I don't like these ideas of violence against Carver. The thing is, Carver appears to me to be totally convinced of his own self-righteousness and superiority to all other human beings. Killing him, no matter how painfully, will allow him to die with that sense of righteousness intact. I don't want him to die. I want Cat and Antimony to be BETTER than he is. To work together to be better students, better achievers, to do it all within the law. To beat and humiliate him at his own game so that he would see that what he was doing was not "for Antimony's own good" or whatever rationalization he uses. I want his life and everything built on it to be exposed for the shabby, cruel lie it is. And, by the way, where exactly is the Court faculty in all this? Does Professor Carver get to make these decisions all by himself? Is no one of age going to call him out for first neglecting his child for years, then coming back and doing nothing but humiliate her?

Plot hole, to me at least: this chapter has established that Mr. Carver has obtained access to all of Antimony's schoolwork from the past several years and has had sufficient time to review and compare the work to that of many other students. This implies that in compiling this evidence AND arranging for Antimony to repeat year 9, he has been at the court for longer than just the morning of this first class. If he has been at the court for even one day, I would expect at least one of the following people to have known about it and informed Antimony: Mr. Donlan; Mrs. Donlan; Eglamore; Reynard; Jones (maybe).
Further disorganized observations: Anthony Carver has been described as being "devoid of emotion" by Jones; Reynard said he was "incapable of feeling anything other than disdain". He is not simply a logical vulcan-esque person, though. I believe he cares about Antimony's schoolwork integrity because he feels it reflects poorly on him. He refers to Kat as "Ms. Donlan", but calls Antimony by her first name - both in the class environment and after class. This separates her out as being less respected (not to mention his unnecessary description of her makeup as "ridiculous"). The Donlans mention years back that he has arranged for all of Antimony's needs to be provided for (i.e. tuition, boarding fees, books, etc) so he is not without a sense of responsibility towards her, but it is a responsibility that ends sharply at physical needs. He does not comprehend emotional needs, as established with his [lack of] relationship with Brinnie. He may even understand that Antimony wants a relationship with him, but he doesn't see anything in it for himself and it would waste his time, taking him away from his work. The argument that she would benefit from the relationship - that perhaps she wouldn't even have been cheating if he had been present in her life - is totally irrelevant/incomprehensible to him. In his eyes she has a responsibility to work hard and succeed and that should be totally unaffected by any other factors in her life; his presence or lack of it should not affect her the same way that her lack of presence does not affect him. He singled out her work for review and acknowledged that he cared about her integrity where the court did not. All of his effort is devoted to judging her, however, rather than encouraging or helping her in any way. Her success or failure reflects on him, so it is therefore important. When Reynard confronts Antimony about her cheating she rejects him as trying to be her father. Perhaps she kept doing it not because she needed to but in the same way a child acts out to get the attention of a neglectful parent.
On the other hand, it is no accident or coincidence that he has come back to the school to teach. Everything he does is on purpose. This chapter is winding me up. =P

If there is some kind of conspiracy going on, some of the higher ups at the court could've had Anthony studying the situation and waiting in the wings for a long time while they kept his involvement a secret from Eglamore, the Donlans and anybody else they didn't want to know about it. (Remember that even Jones didn't seem to know who the headmaster's pick for medium was going to be before he announced it.) After all, the Court apparently had an idea about Annie's cheating long before this, so it makes it at least possible that this is just a move in a longer game. I suppose we won't know until further along in the chapter.

Edit: I see this was your first post. Welcome to the forum! It is a nice and friendly spot in internet, although currently somewhat in a state of war, or approaching it. Notice the irony that Userbars for both sides are provided by the same person... do we have a warmonger who provides weaponry for both sides to see them destroy each other?

He wouldn't be the first parent to demand that form of address. That is true. We have barely seen Antimony interact with him verbally before now, so it is possible that he always expects that. But she also almost calls him "father" in class (pausing out of perhaps a mix of uncertainty, shock, and embarrassment) and does call him "father" when he calls her at the end of chapter 36; if it was his expectation that she call him "sir", I doubt she would have gotten it 'wrong' both times.
