The more I think, the more options open up. Jones isn't exactly an ethereal powerhouse as far as we know, but it'd be even more surprising for her to turn out weak in that area. She'd also be able to get help the most directly given her position. Coyote's the strongest contender and at the same time the weakest, because Coyote's power is near godlike as far as we know... But he's Coyote. There's Red and Blue who we know for a fact to have strong etheric connections. The question with them is whether or not they'd be able to follow directions and take things seriously. But speaking of those two, there's also Green and her bunny friend who may or may not be able to help. Reynardine's abilities are questionable in strength, but I imagine if he had any notable power, he'd be Annie's first choice. Anja's power is also fairly strong, but then there's the question of whether what she does is qualified as "magic". For the sake of this situation, I doubt it. Any and all of the Psychopomps would be excellent choices in the "strong magic user" department and terrible choices in the "expected to actually help" department. On that note, Mort is no longer an option as nice as that would be. Parley and Smitty are probably the best choices. I wish I could evaluate them better, but that's pretty much all there is. They're both completely sane, serious, and Parley's abilities literally run in the family while Smitty's abilities could probably make the stone end up with him even if he wasn't their choice.

Depends where she's from, 'my love' sounds fairly generic to me. if she's from out in the West Country it would be 'Moi Luvver', from Lancashire she'd be calling Annie 'duck'. "My love" feels a little old fashioned, but I could imagine someone saying it with a southern/neutral English accent. A South West/Bristol accent would also work; I am from that area and it isn't uncommon to hear "moi luv", in addition to "luvver", used in local radio call ins. I would be tempted to use "my love" in a similar way to "mother dearest"; in circumstances where I wanted to be sickeningly over formal without actually following protocol. You could add Reynard into the list of recipients. He wouldn't be that useful on his own, but I could imagine Annie thinking of him first. I wonder whether spells are taught to everyone, taught to select students (ones with the talent/in a certain house) or learnt by people in their spare time. It feels like the sort of thing that Annie should learn a little of; at the very least she'd probably understand it more than physics slit experiments.

Anyone knows something about the origin/original purpose of these? (And if Tom did his homework and used it in the correct context here?)

Aside from being able to change from toy wolf body to more deadly wolf body, his only shtick is body possession (a gift from Coyote), which won't work on the ship or the ship's robots (no eyes)...only the robot police guys. And what would we have then, a Reybot? Blech.

Off cores she send it to Smitty with his luck it will have a lot larger chance it will arrive (and he have a one person army to his disposal. Who can bi there in a second and tack robot with them for a non violence resources) She really do not trust the teachers, Jones have no magic and Coyote make it only worse. and why not send it to Smitty? ?

Also, what's with Jack taking over Kat's job? >.> Well Kat's a bit busy. Anyhoo, Jack's always been a dab hand with laser cows and location-hiding-buzzers and that kind of thing. Techie. Nice/interesting to see that Jennie does more than just hang on Jack! I agree, be it said, that Parley and George would probably be the ones to send this to, if not Anja. Still, I wouldn't mind seeing Zimmy go ballistic and really blow the robots' minds. I was never much of a Star Trek Voyager fan but loved the part of an episode where there are these aliens that get off on recording and re-experiencing other people's nightmares; they get way more than they expected when they get into Tuvok's mind. Scaaaaary, a.k.a. "be careful what you wish for."

Not just a pretty face, then. I'm guessing that this is Jenny's special ability, like affinity with machines is Kat's. I guess that the Court is providing her with a lab for occult research on her spare time. And what's happening outside the window in the last panel looks worrisome. The Ether seems to be rising from the sea. I guess we'll soon learn how the sea-ether differs from the rain-ether. Anyone knows something about the origin/original purpose of these? (And if Tom did his homework and used it in the correct context here?) Ars Goetia, the Key of Solomon and the other grimoires from the 16th to 19th century had hundreds of these with more variations than you'd bother to count. Their job was normally to summon and bind angels and demons to the magician's service, or protect him from their influence.

Anyone knows something about the origin/original purpose of these? (And if Tom did his homework and used it in the correct context here?) Sleepy Hollow had something that looked very similar. I cannot find a picture of it, but there were wards carved under Johnny Depp's bed. Finding the origin of these rune circles would be pretty difficult; a lot of civilisations have had similar ideas. Mostly these were to protect against evil spirits; the Tudor House in Southampton has some small symbols carved into the walls to protect the house (I cannot remember what they were - possibly daisy symbols) and those wouldn't be the starting point in England. A quick look shows something called Babylonian Demon Bowls, which could be linked. Edit- I probably over-analysed what was meant by "origin". The circle thing with similar symbols looks like it is based on the grimoire things that were mentioned earlier. I think that those in turn were based on research done on older protective magic, with some of it being combined. Most civilisations have some basis on performing tasks to prevent bad things from happening.

Jones can't use blinker stones, so I doubt Annie could communicate with her through the ether. Jones would have to guess what this flying contraption with someones bliker stone was all about. My money is on Anja. Where did Jenny find chalk or a pen with a colour that conveniently matches her own... lipstick... waaaait a minute!

This wink is curious. Parley and Smitty are probably the best choices. I wish I could evaluate them better, but that's pretty much all there is. They're both completely sane, serious, and Parley's abilities literally run in the family while Smitty's abilities could probably make the stone end up with him even if he wasn't their choice. It's simpler than this. What matters is ability to handle the problem and minimal time to respond. Thus, all signs point to Parley (with Smitty in tow). On the second place is Anja, thanks to the fun door. But while Antimony knows Donlans are a serious force... she also is rather vindictive, if you didn't notice yet - and in cases far less worthy of this than "her main babe" being shanghaied for something that smells ten sea miles upwind of a catastrophe. Annie was already thinking in terms of "best defense is good offense" 4 pages ago - and after seeing Parley and Giggleblade in action, that's about what she wants to happen now. See just about any Witchblade AMV for extreme graphical representation.

I think you might be interested in these links: en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Key_of_Solomonarchive.org/details/greaterkeyofsolo00soloI'm being strongly reminded of these sorts of circles, whose originally purpose was to summon and constrain different spirits. The art style is at least pretty similar. edit: Lightice beat me to it. I should go to bed. xD Keeping the links up though in case people are interested in them.

Ah, thanks for the infos, guys.
I'd agree that directly contacting Jones would be impossible. Getting Anja would be the most rational thing to do, but I'd put my money on George and Smitty.

"My love" sounds so awkward. Isn't "love" or "luv" supposed to be the proper Britishism? Not sure what part of england he hailed from, but a pom tailor where I am had a habit of calling everyone 'luvlies'. I suspect it's a regionally-variant thing. More importantly: ALLELUIA! THE CARDBOARD IS A REAL GIRL NOW. Thanks Geppetto Tom!

I mean, not that goths performing Hermetic Magic is an overused trope or anything BUT STILL.
When a personality in the character rings, a soul from purgatory springs.
Or something like that.

They should call Robot. As high priest of Kat, he's the best person to properly defuse this situation, without having to resort to violence. But then, they don't really know that. :/

Let's hope that the Seraph robots didn't anticipate this by having more of their members stage a coup back at the Court and place their tags on everyone with etheric abilities back there. (Though that would probably be too melodramatic.)
As I've mentioned before, I think that Lindsey is the best choice for outside intervention from a storytelling point of view; she's already been featured in chis chapter, and the reason for this takeover is the cruise ship's obsession with her. (Though calling her would better fit Paz than Annie - assuming that Paz has telepathic abilities and doesn't need to have the animal in front of her to talk face-to-face with it.) None of the candidates people have mentioned (Anja, Jones, Parley and Smith, etc.) have been alluded to in this chapter, so their arrival would feel too "deus ex machina".
I do think that Annie needs to let the Court know about this, despite her usual caution about confiding in it; the robots' actions are serious enough that the Court needs to be informed. (If with the danger that, based on its track record, it might take so ruthless a response as to come down hard on the entire robot community, whether innocent or guilty. At the least, probably nailing the remains of the Seraph robots up in the open to be exposed to the elements until they rust, as a warning to all other would-be rebellious robots.) Of course, the Court officials may also start asking a lot of questions about how the "Creator Kat" business got started....

To think that everyone (me included) assumed it would be a laid back Faraway morning 2.0... Oi! I agree, and it's gonna be at least two chapters, don't you think? So. What magic-user, of the ones she's AWARE of, is Annie going to send that to? Anja (sorta predictable choice)? ParSmit (at least they'd arrive quickly *bip*)? Coyote (godly powers count as magic, right?)? Jones (she's not really a magic-USER, is she?)? zimmyzims Poll? "My love" sounds so awkward. Isn't "love" or "luv" supposed to be the proper Britishism? No more awkward than that old camel-smoking lady at the diner calling you "honey child" or "sugar" when she asks you how you want your grits. One of the reasons I want to be a girl in my next life, saying those things as a middle-aged guy is not done, but women always get away with it.

But then, they don't really know that. :/ Interesting idea, but I think it would play out like... - The blinker stone will end up with Smitty, one way or another, and Parley will *bip* them onto the ship. - After further plot development, Smitty will pull Robot out of his pocket and say "I wondered what that robot was for, had it in my pocket for a week." - Parley will close with "So that really was a robot in your pocket?"

Anja seems the obvious choice, but especially if Annie thinks the Court may be compromised...my long-shot would be on Ysengrin.
Edit: Or go for the comic-ending apocalyptic option and send it to Jeanne Edit2: Yeah, I know it's not summoning an individual, but sending the stone...but it's funny to think about. Kinda...

I'm wondering at the significance of the wink Jennie gave Annie. It seems to mean a little more than 'what do you think?' in response to Annie asking 'You did this?'
On that note, though, where has this accomplished young lady been hiding?

Also, what's with Jack taking over Kat's job? >.> Well Kat's a bit busy. It was also established rather early that Jack is pretty savvy about technology. Not on Kat's "hypergenius" level, but pretty darn good all the same. His more recent growth of magical abilities has somewhat overshadowed it, flying is pretty cool after all, but from the start he's been presented as gifted in the tech area. What I find interesting is that these abilities don't seem to be tracked by the robots, and that they don't seem to be considered a threat, when they most certainly are. At least if used smartly. Then again, they didn't thingk Paz's ability to communicate with animals was any trouble, whilst being on a ship, an enviroment legendary for its huge number of stowaway animal passengers. We also don't know how far her powers extend. Is there any kind of "commanding" aspect to it. Can she talk to bugs?

Hrm, now I feel like we were SUPPOSED to be inclined to write Jenny off as nothing at first, so we could be surprised by this page.
Still I feel a bit cruddy having jumped to conclusions about her being some bobblehead solely based on her association with Jack. On the other hand, hey, maybe Jack actually legit likes her. At least I hope so. If he's just using her as some kind of weird rebound/replacement girl, that'll suck even harder since she'll seem like she deserves it even less. Not that anyone deserves that at all...
Anyway lets not alchemy anybody's limbs off.

I know I've seen the alchemical rune circle thingies before, but all googling mostly turns up references to full metal alchemist, which is not what I'm looking for. Anyone knows something about the origin/original purpose of these? (And if Tom did his homework and used it in the correct context here?) What Tom used here is actually the human transmutation circle from Fullmetal Alchemist (with different symbols). Being a huge fan of the anime/manga, I noticed it immediately. It was a very pleasant surprise when I saw it.

The circle's used in FMA are based of this, Alchemical symbols in magick circle arrangment, so its no wonder that they would look similar to the ones Jenny is using if she is a Wiccan style witch who uses European magick.

As I said, most of what google spew out this morning was about FMA, but I thought I had seen it in some other contexts. The symbol must just have permeated the internet to a degree that it became recognizable even to those who don't know the show. It's a really neat design and a nice Easter Egg.
