last page: Tom line: "What's the deal?", about the "trouble in paradise" Jack and his date seemed to be having. this page : "I guess this is the deal." My wild suggestion is Jack thinks (and knows via one Zimmy's hidden spider in his head) that Zimmy out of control can summon/fail to stop any monster on this realm/reality, specially the long legged ones (as seen on here and here). So, being ion the sea, Zimmy may... RELEASE THE KRAKEN! I'm pretty sure that's not where you were going... but it sparked something to mind. Lindsey is here. We know (more or less) why every character is here - Jenny to be a faceless Marcy/Zimmy/Boxbot lookalike, Jack to drive plot, Zimmy to drive plot, Annie and Kat to be main babes, Paz is love interest, etc, but Lindsey except to look majestic? We know that she's a very etheric being, (maybe Bud's here as well, but I'm not sure of that), and if we get a hormone-filled angry/betrayed/irked/jealous/seasick Zimmy, who knows what would happen with the giant magical sea chicken-peck-typing crustacean hanging out under the boat? Also, Jack looks unjacklike and old.

Jack's reaction makes little sense considering his character. He has't shown himself to act this angry on or off whitelegs. And if one were to assert that it makes perfect sense for him to act like this because his father did, then I have nothing to respond with but, "Die Eugenist Scum!"

And if one were to assert that it makes perfect sense for him to act like this because his father did, then I have nothing to respond with but, "Die Eugenist Scum!" We haven't seen Jack in awhile. During that time he's developed a relationship, rather than pining after Zimmy. He's been going through some major changes, even though we weren't witness to them. And keep in mind that unrequited love can often turn into spite, especially when dealing with hormonal teenagers. Zimmy did hurt Jack pretty bad and didn't even care until Gamma set her straight. There's room for some major anger, there. But Jack doesn't even have to be a jerk to get angry, here. He knows better than anyone that Zimmy is dangerous to her environment, whether she likes it or not, and usually stays away from other people apart from Gamma because of it. Suddenly finding out without warning that there's a person of mass destruction on board an ocean liner with hundreds of teens far from any rescue can get a person pretty angry, even if they're perfectly decent, otherwise.

Jack's seen The Avengers. He knows what's up (except that this probably takes place a few years before 2012 but whatever).

Could this whole cruise been planned to observe some kind of reaction from Zimmy? Would the Court endanger the rest of the children in Zimmy's year (at least two of whom are the offspring of teachers - one the Headmaster's own daughter) just for the sake of a scientific experiment? It's done some bad things, but I don't think it would stoop that low.

Zimmy's dangerous, yeah, but I don't figure it's any worse than normal. And even if it was, she's still got Gamma, and the restricted space means Annie should always be available inside ten minutes too. Especially in a situation like this where they're both within thirty feet of Zimmy, it should be fine. There's probably nothing to worry about unless Jack does something to provoke her... So yeah, there's definitely going to be a big problem. We don't know what seasickness could do to Zimmy. It could boost her powers to the point where Gamma can't block them.

Am I the only one who thinks the whole chapter is one of Zimmy's illusions? Both her and Gamma have the clothes they normally have in the Zimmingham parts... Gamma's Zimmingham clothes are a bit more colourful. It appears you're right, her shirt is just the same base colour. But then Gamma also wore something rather different in Dobranoc, Gamma. Zimmy however wears exactly the same stuff she did in every single incarnation of Zimmingham we've seen, with the exception of her pants being grey, not green, in Dobranoc, Gamma. Yeah, it's probably just that Gamma likes pink shirts and Zimmy doesn't even own any other clothes. And as to why they change to their civilian clothes when in Zimmingham is a question for a different discussion...

I don't think Zimmy is angry about Gamma being around people. The sequence of panels is: Gamma smiling, boys looking at Gamma, Gamma looking confused, Jack glaring at something, Gamma looking upset and Zimmy glaring/touching Gamma. I interpret this to mean that Jack is openly glaring at Zimmy/Gamma, Gamma sees this and is upset, and Zimmy trying to comfort Gamma and glaring back at Jack. I read it this way the first time as well. But then I thought about it and the other interpretation also makes sense: Gamma is taken by surprise by the attention of RandomGuy. Jack sees that and turns sour at the thought of random people trying to socialize with Gamma (and by extension Zimmy) because a) he knows the danger of a jealous Zimmy and b) he is very protective of Zimmy/Gamma. (I say Zimmy/Gamma, not just Zimmy, because I don't think Jack would ever want to break those two apart.) Next page prediction: Jack stepping in, shoving those random dudes away. (Prediction success rate: 1%) I am inclined to believe this as well. Jack knows full well Zimmy and Gamma are more than just "an item". And it's also quite possible that he feels some of Zimmy's jealousy. Not in a psychic connection kind of way, but in a way that he would empathize with someone he cares for. Admittedly this made more sense in my head. But this does bring up a couple questions: 1. in Faraway Morning he said he's in love with Zimmy. Has this unrequited feeling evolved into resentment (not specifically at anyone, but at the situation)? I think it's very possible, even likely. 2. Has he made or tried to make contact with Zimmy and Gamma since Faraway Morning to try and come to terms-- any terms--with his feelings? My immediate guess is no.

Another random though: So far we seem to assume that Zimmy might be a danger to those stuck on a boat with her. Did we stop and think if maybe being stuck on a boat might be a danger to Zimmy?

What if, this is less of a vacation for the kids and more of a vacation for Lindsey, including full buffet. A cruise full of hormone-riding teens, plus Zimmy, could equal an Etheric Bug Smorgasbord (awesome band name, incidentally). Would the Court have her and Bud's necessary diet available? And worse, if she happens to be pregnant. Maybe, the Court thinks Lindsey is a greater threat than Zimmy. Especially, if there's a risk of her eating first years.

Pity, I had really started to like the Zimmy+Gamma->Jenny thing. Yes, I'd been coaxing that idea along in my mind for awhile now even though it was getting pretty unlikely. But this page firmly shoots down the theory. So now I'm wondering about Jenny -- what's with her? I hope she's not just plot kindling to be thrown into this flammable little mix. I would be more than a little disappointed if she ended up having some power that ends up saving the day or somesuch, but if she's at the Court now there must be something special about her. I'm confident that as always, Tom will provide a way for her story to make sense in an interesting and creative way. I'm just curious what that will be! Jenny is wearing a red shirt (blouse). I guess plot kindling is another way of putting it. And John is also wearing a red shirt. Why won't kids learn from all the sacrificed red shirts in earlier generations?

What if, this is less of a vacation for the kids and more of a vacation for Lindsey, including full buffet. Annie: You - you're trying to invite Lindsey? But it's very dangerous! Student #1: Ah, don't worry! Student #2: She prob'ly looks hungry but turns out ta be a nice gal! Student #3: Yeah, that always hap- (Lindsey's giant can-opener claw tears open the roof with a terrible GROOONK. Students proceed to run from her while Zimmy picks her nose.)

I'm worried that events of this chapter might lead Gamma to split from Zimmy.
...
I don't like that idea and I'm not sure where I'm getting it, other than the picture ripping in two --> a couple, a past, a memory ripping in two. But the idea's not going away.

I think it's been implied that most people at the Court have some sort of special ability. I wonder what Jenny's is? Most students don't flaunt theirs - I wonder why? It would seem like an elephant in the room if I were there.
(I wonder if Jack can still fly, or if that was a whitelegs manipulating his etheric power?)

I'd forgotten about the time Zimmy said she would kill everyone in the world and then herself if Gamma wanted her to.
I wonder if Zimmy is the juvenile form of something much greater, like say a new Chthonian goddess of death or madness.

About the fact we haven't seen adults on board yet; doesn't a dance like this usually start with a boring speech by a teacher?

Zimmy may... RELEASE THE KRAKEN! Far too stereotypical for Tom, and no fancy song reference. Now, say... Last night, I watched the moon drink the tides 'Til a whale rose from the hole in the sea. She breathed in the clouds like an opium ride, Smiled, and devoured me. We know that she's a very etheric being Exactly. And almost certainly much more powerful than Annie-in-training was when she managed to keep in check Zimmy's fount of crazy to let Gamma sleep.

At this point I don't have enough clues to get an idea of whats going on, but I am sure of that it has to do with rain and etheric abilities.

I'm just confused as to Jack's reaction and sentence. He seems to be angry at both Zimmy and Gamma (maybe just Zimmy) but what he said registers in my head as him being worried for Zimmy being on the boat and his face looking like he's angry at Gamma. ... Could it be that, instead of anger, it could be desperation?

He knows what must be done. Kill the boy!Zimmy's about to lose her shit, and attack Random-Friendly-Guy for being too friendly towards Gamma. Jack realizes this, and is going to rush in a break up the fight. Zimmy's gonna get even more pissed and lose control, which will only be amplified by her intolerance of boats on the open ocean. Shit will then hit the fan. I so predict it. yes this will be great, then Ann will have to give zimmey the slap down. The greatest thing to ever happen in fanfictionville. Zimmy throwing blasts of pure darkness and Ann turning the whole boat into a magical fire realm.

I'm getting quite convinced that what Zimmy reacts angrily to is not what Gamma does. She's like moving pas Gamma to protect her or something, she's angry to anybody but Gamma. Not sure who, however. Jack or those other boys. I guess all three.

Though I don't think "being etheric" is enough to be a " heat sink" for Zimmy. Renard is a strong etheric being but treats Zimmy like a monster. I would even guess that it's dangerrous for pure etheric beings to be around Zimmy when she has one of her episodes. This is just speculation though.
