Hey all, new to the forums Welcome to the forum! The newest reason: Jack isn't cool any more, because of looks. Before that: people ship Annie with someone else (usually Kat), and think he is the competition. And some anger from when he killed the robot-guard and hurt Rey, spiders or not

Hey all, new to the forums, but I just have this nagging question: Why do people seem to hate Jack? Most of the time we've seen him he was under the control of the spiders and the little we've seen him on his own he seems alright. Dating Jenny seems like a jerky thing to do, but we don't even know the full story there yet. I dunno, maybe I'll be proven wrong later, but at the moment I just don't see why there are so many comments that Jack is bad. In addition to what keef said... He's a Hyland, from a long line of jerks. Okay maybe we've only seen his father, but that's enough for the haters. www.gunnerkrigg.com/?p=540I admit that I am quick to assume that Jack is a jerk. But Tom has a way of making readers think a character is a jerk before revealing that there were reasons behind the behavior. It can leave the reader feeling like the jerk for thinking poorly of the character without knowing enough about him. I really detest Anthony because he abandoned Annie. I know there will be big reveals concerning Anthony and will I probably end up feeling bad for detesting him so much. But until then, I want see Zimmy punch him in the face again! www.gunnerkrigg.com/?p=1044

It just occurred to me - what's with Margo's hair? Both times we've seen her she's been growing out out a burgundy dye job. Wildspec: She's like Isaac in Paranatural, her hair is an outward manifestation of a spirit feeding off her spectral energy and giving her... special powers.

]Yup, my guess is that Jack is upset because Jenny dressed up for the dance and looks less like Zimmy. Looks to me that he's looking at something to the left of the panel. I don't think that he's mad at Jenny, but at some third party, and Jenny is trying to calm him down. If I had to guess, someone made a snide comment about dating a Zimmy-lookalike. My guess is that Zimmy called him out on his choice of date. I can just see it now: Zimmy: [To Jack] I didn't believe Carver until I saw your "girlfriend". [To Jenny] Looking like me is going to attract a lot of slimeballs to you. [...] Also, Matt & Becky together in the background? WHA? Was not expecting that. Who's Becky?
I can't comment for other people but I think that the main reason that I think he's a jerk is because of the way he behaved when we first met him in Residential and then subsequently in Spring Healed. Yes, I know that he was being mind controlled at the time and I am trying to reassess him but there is evidence that we are bad at correcting erroneous information (listen from about 13:20).

Becky Ground, the yellow-haired girl who shows up in various pictures of the class kids, starting here. The name is a little Tom Siddell joke for a particular background character.

I can only assume she dyes it like that on purpose. Strictly speaking, it isn't actually compulsory to use the dye all the way down to your roots is it?

People here are nice. ^_^ Quite pleasant (unless debates, then things get... eventful, lively). Anyway, yeah, Jack used to be quite likable/decent before Whitelegs. Perhaps they/it has more lasting influence on Jack than (any)one might like. Such as his mature appearance, I speculate, might be because of what happened during the stints with the spiders. Or maybe just contact with Zimmingham. Or maybe he just has those genes. Anyway, I'm sympathetic of Jack currently. I'm just gonna witness what shall happen in the coming pages and chapters. (Poor Jack, if all of this and what may come are due to Whitelegs)

Anyone who hates Jack needs to reread Faraway Morning. He is actually a really cool guy.

Wait, were there people who had sympathy for Jack in the first place? He always seemed to be kind of a jerk to me... Give me five! I already thought I was the only one! Well you spent time there too, so you already did your penance so, what you're saying is like, if I got syphilis and was aware of it, but transmitted it to other people via sex without protection, it would be okay, because I suffer from the disease too?

Thankee for the welcomes and thoughts! The question just bugs me because I really like Jack. And obviously I can't know what Tom is thinking or planning, but that would be pretty sucky if he plans on Jack being, at the very least, meant for people to like and the fanbase is like NOOOOOO!

Seriously, after rereading Faraway Morning I can't see why anyone would dislike Jack. I think it's just because everyone loves Kat.

Don't understand that reasoning at all. Jack has seemed like a selfish jerk to me from the beginning and Faraway Morning was no different.

Such a nice boy, although maybe a bit misguided.. TvTropes as a venereal disease, nice comparison. Of course in the end all metaphors bite there own tails

I still like Jack. I really don't think he's a dick, I think he's just just suffering from the common teen affliction of "figuring out just who the hell you are and just what the hell you want out of life." And, yeah, we did see that one time where his dad was a dick, but from Jack's comment about Dad Hyland saying Surma "was nice." I dunno, but that seems to me like, at some point, he made up with the Old Gang for being such a tool, at least enough to remember them fondly. Now, it's entirely possible that he was just trying to save face when he told Jack that, but why would he do that if, on some level at least, he was not remorseful? Besides, you really can't blame the child for their parent's failings, unless you can explicitly point to where said failings negatively influenced said child, which you cannot in this case. After all, have we ever seen Jack show an inkling of xenophobia that his father possessed all those years ago?

Seriously, after rereading Faraway Morning I can't see why anyone would dislike Jack. I think it's just because everyone loves Kat. That's it! Kat is my favorite character and my attitude towards Jack follows hers. If Kat says Jack must die, then he must be killed. Killed with FIRE! Seriously though, I have noticed that my opinion of Jack does seem to coincide with Kat's and I don't think it is entirely a coincidence.

And Jack just sort of seemed like a very tolerant easygoing guy in faraway morning. He seems like a dank-ass bro to me.

Oh, come on now, that's a bit of an unfair analogy, isn't it? I mean, TV Tropes is way more contagious than syphilis.

That All in the Mind episode was very informative - and should be better understood by the general populace. But, the BBC radio 4 website sure does hate me - without Flash it's a struggle to find the episode from their downloadable archives. Anyway, for others like me, eventually I found this direct link: downloads.bbc.co.uk/podcasts/radio4/medmatters/medmatters_20121204-2132a.mp3 That link was listed on this page: www.bbc.co.uk/podcasts/series/medmatters/all and was titled "Alzheimer’s Disease; Misinformation; PTSD" dated Tue, 4 Dec 12, Duration: 28 mins. An alternative podcast source, the BBC's RSS archive for All in the Mind, only goes back to 2013 April.

Also, Residential wasn't the first time we met Jack, it was Power Station.

Yup, haters are going to hate. ; ) What "haters"? I doubt that anyone specifically have it for Jack. It's simply an entirely expectable turn... for a work on the level of L.C.D.: everyone is either copycat or misunderstood TM rebel, no variants. The problem lies entirely in ability to see the difference between things high and low. It may correlate with ability to learn that "expectable" and "Tom" rarely go hand in hand, of course...
