On the other hand, I just realized, as lovely as it would be I'm not sure I'm counting on the rest of the kids on board being as accepting of Paz* and Kat's relationship as those we've seen thus far. According to Renard the Court is far more accepting of unconventional people of all types than the society at large. I doubt there's going to be any major drama on that front. You know, I got through this comic (and about two thirds of the thread) before I realized that Annie still doesn't know that Kat and Paz are dating; apparently Paz forgot for a second too! Did anyone else forget this? This is going to get awkward REALLY fast. Huh? Yes she does. There was a whole chapter devoted to that non-debacle.

The "Path" pronunciation is from Tom, on his chapter retrospectives. I believe someone said, at one time, that it was a more "Spain" Spanish pronunciation, as opposed to, say, pronouncing it "Pass" which is how I've been pronouncing it. My exposure to Spain spanish is,sadly, negligible. I think I heard that Tom actually had family in the Galicea region of Spain, from which Paz hails.

I'd say Tom's the Whedon of webcomics, but I'm not sure the body count is high enough, yet. Only one recurring character dead (really dead, written out for good), so the body count definitely isn't that high yet. Of course, if something happens like Zimmy's seasickness unleashing enough etheric horrors that the dance starts to look like a remake of "Carrie"....

No, Annie knows, but think - she has no one else to go to the dance with. Kat is really her only (school) friend at the moment. Plus it's a school dance, it'd be different if they were going clubbing and Annie invited herself along. As long as Annie can give them space when they need it, and everybody stays chill, it should turn out alright. Also, this page. And Annie revealed that she thought Kat was Bi during Year 8: www.gunnerkrigg.com/?p=1290

The top panel, which is probably the least conspicuous, reminded me of something. Just where did the Court get a sea to cruise on? Could it possibly be connected to the etheric collection grid? It's probably the Atlantic, putting the Court somewhere in the western coast of the UK. I don't think even the Court has that big pool around. Maybe the ship uses ether for fuel. Dutch readers: Ik moet nu aan Heer Bommel en de ombrenger denken.. Ga ik niet uitleggen in het engels O....k? Are you arguing with my post or adding onto it? (It's hard to tell with text.) I was writing a reply, and linking to the same page as Jelly Jellybean and suddenly thought: what the hell somebody will be faster anyway.. Three somebody's actually.

Maybe the ship uses ether for fuel. Maybe, the ship runs on "ships", thus the dance. How meta.

...I'm gonna need to watch The Love Boat. According to something I read, that show had one major-character-for-one-episode homosexual. ONE. In like nine years. That's actually kind of sad. Even for the era it was produced in. Is this outfit in character for Kat? She had the hairband of +5 straightness before and tried to look girly. With this outfit I feel like she's actively trying to go the other way. Someone pointed out she's wearing heels (nice catch) and I think the point of that is to be a bit taller than Paz. I always thought her style was just neutral and casual rather than intentionally tom-boy. I think it's pretty close to perfect for her. She is neither trying to be girly (which she is seriously not good at) nor trying to hide that she's female (which would probably be easier for her, this month at least, but still takes study, preparation, and practice - and she has shown no indication of wanting to be male). She's going as a tomboy in formal dress. She IS a tomboy, and she's going to a formal-dress dance. So there may be some room for nitpicking, but she has the basic concept down solid. It also works well alongside her primary date's outfit. Which matters.

This has been noted before and I think today’s panel is the third occurrence, enough to make me believe that Tom is doing this intentionally and probably as a character trait… When Paz dresses up, she wears outfits that are really cute, but are probably more appropriate for someone who is a few years (or more) younger. Examples: - The sailor outfit in Faraway morning. www.gunnerkrigg.com/?p=923- The light blue sun dress in this chapter. www.gunnerkrigg.com/?p=1386- And in today's panel she is wearing a cute dress to the dance, but it does seem a little too cute. When Annie dresses up, she wears adult outfits and looks a few years (or more) older. The contrast between Paz and Annie in today’s panel seems pretty stark to me. I like Paz’s outfits and I like a character with some quirks. It just makes me wonder if the outfits are part of Paz's backstory, or if Tom just puts them on Paz because he wants to include the outfits and can't put them on Annie or Kat.

So, are KatPaz *out* now? It's one thing when things aren't "a secret secret", it's another to attend a school dance together. Kat continues to nicely pull off the slightly butch look. I have been wondering this too. We saw Annie find out, but do any of the other students or staff know yet? Hopefully this won't cause drama. It could be that in between times, the others already found out and it's no big deal any more, or never was. Then again, this is The Torn Sea. Something is going to happen. No knowing what will trigger the coming storm.

Someone pointed out she's wearing heels (nice catch) and I think the point of that is to be a bit taller than Paz. I always thought her style was just neutral and casual rather than intentionally tom-boy. Nah. Neutral and casual is all very well and good up until you have to to some sort of event you're expected to dress up a little for. Neutral and casual is in fact my preferred style, and I'm always at something of a loss when I have to dress up. Dressier clothes tend to be more gendered. It's not really easy to dress up without making a statement either way. For family events, my mother would always expect me to wear a dress, but I never had any, since I don't actually like them, so I'd usually be forced into one of my sisters'. It was a miserable affair. At one point I had the idea of wearing just a simple collared button-down and pants, similar to Kat's outfit, except my mom pointed out it would be too businessy, not *fun* enough for a Christmas party. (Kat's shirt has a little more flair though.) Women's dress shirts tend to have all of these patterns and frills I feel so awkward in. Men's dress clothes, on the other hand, aren't cut to fit me, and I don't want to look like a man, anyway. It's very stressful! I still haven't found a solution, but I would be pretty close to comfortable in the outfit that Kat is wearing. I wonder if she's gone through any of the angst that I have. My mom really likes it when I look like a girl, though. Maybe Anja would be more understanding. Just curious, what sort of outfit do you see as more in-character for her?

Oh, it may well! And then we could see Annie raging about others messing with her main babe! Burn, mo******cker, burn!

I'm glad someone pointed this out, because I had missed that pronunciation note. I heard it said somewhere that once upon a time there was a prince or such in Spain who spoke with a lisp, and so the rest of the upper crust(*) started doing it too...but only thereabouts, not in the rest of the Spanish speaking world. Kind of like how, because Queen Victoria felt the need to stretch her back during the Hallelujah Chorus everyone's still bouncing to their feet during it today. True or not? Your guess, or research I suppose but I'm too lazy today. (*Only been to Spain once, and as near as I could tell with my execrable abilities, some lithped their s's but many others did not. Never heard it done this way by people with roots in Mexico, Puerto Rico, Cuba and such.)

Now she has accepted that she likes girls as well as boys (Eglamore, Bird-Boy, Muut...) she may just be going at the same thing a different way, albeit as others have commented with quite the flair for a change; maybe Paz even gave her some Date's Eye for the Bi Gal advice/requests? Maybe both of them feel they will stick out less blatantly this way while dancing together, or just find it easier to dance than if both are wearing dresses with - as again someone noted - built in flares like Paz's? *heh* In any case, with the clothes and the arm around the waist, their relationship shouldn't be unknown to anyone after this! I feel the need to point out that there isn't any substantial evidence for Kat being Bi. Many gay people have crushes on the opposite sex when they're really young like that, before figuring out their sexuality. I remember several posters saying that Kat's experiences matched theirs when they were that age.

Kat looks like a dude... Whatever. I came here to say the complete opposite of this. This is the first time we've seen hints of feminine curves starting to develop on Kat. Given her mother's lithe figure, it is not surprising that it has taken this long.

Given her mother's lithe figure, it is not surprising that it has taken this long. I don't think there really are any more hints than before. Even less, because her last outfit showed some curve at her hips/bum. All I see in this page is the collar shirt bent and popping out where she's stuffed it into her trousers, like collar shirts tend to do, (sorry for being so unable to say this in English) and maybe the slightest hint of bosom, so slight that a guy with a little chest muscle could look like that. Is there any more of it than when she was wearing the stripy shirt. Hardly.
