Is this outfit in character for Kat? She had the hairband of +5 straightness before and tried to look girly. With this outfit I feel like she's actively trying to go the other way. Someone pointed out she's wearing heels (nice catch) and I think the point of that is to be a bit taller than Paz. I always thought her style was just neutral and casual rather than intentionally tom-boy.

Depends. My group of friends (+dates) all dance together in a big circle with any couples going off to do their thing then coming back. Maybe we're weird though. And seeing from whom she could learn to dance... for all we know, it may well be in full 3D.

Also they're fourteen and come from a boarding school in the middle of a vast, desolate wasteland, have they even been to parties, let alone are familiar with the concept of third-wheeling? Teens will figure stuff like that out on their own even if they've never even read of a party, before. And it's not like it's the first party they've had. I guess we'll have to see if teen drama's on the horizon, or if they manage to subvert the expectations. Though I agree, we might suddenly shift into a completely different form of drama. The top panel, which is probably the least conspicuous, reminded me of something. Just where did the Court get a sea to cruise on? Could it possibly be connected to the etheric collection grid? It's probably the Atlantic, putting the Court somewhere in the western coast of the UK. I don't think even the Court has that big pool around.

The Band was at a time when she was still shaken Some by Paz in Faraway Morning and was trying to maintain, perhaps largely to herself an image of some more conventional femininity. While never going all out with a masculine getup, she's neer really been the sort for dresses and makeup. She seems fond of neutral styles, bulky coats, and of course her comfort in boilersuits. I can see the shirt here as within the bounds of her personality, yes.

Yes this is absolutely not going to be awkward. No sir. My group of friends (+dates) all dance together in a big circle with any couples going off to do their thing then coming back. Maybe we're weird though. We do the same, but with us the couples almost never go off to do their thing. The more PDA-y couples sometimes kiss while in the circle, but that's it.

Paz: Say it again! Kat: Donlan, Katrina Donlan. Paz: SQUEEEEEE

Top panel still: the Lunar fingerprint is in shadow. Annie's influence is being eclipsed... EDIT: I realized at work that overshadowed is more accurate. Sorry for the rushed post.I still wonder if the fingerprint is visible outside the Court/Forrest. The Court held a conference on the phenomena, but the only attendee we know about was mythological. Maybe the mundane world can't see the fingerprint.

Pretty normal for young folks to take their fashion choices up a notch for a school dance. Kat looks very dapper in that outfit, adorable! Dapper is an established fashion tradition for lesbian, bi, and queer women. Kat's look would probably fit best into the category of "soft butch" on the butch - femme spectrum. The cut and drape of her outfit is definitely feminine but it emphasizes a clean, elegant aesthetic. I wear very similar clothing to work every day and I am not butch at all. (Accessories can do a lot to push a basic outfit one direction or another. I often wear a necklace and earrings to dress things up a bit.)

Everything's going wonderfully, Jack's got himself a new girlfriend, Annie doesn't mind him being there, Paz and Kat continue to look adorable, Annie looks wonderful in green as always, even Zimmy gets to show a bit of a soft side, everyone's having a good time and it's a nice big cruise ship all for these kids who've definitely earned it.
I detect something absolutely horrible happening very soon.

I think Kat's outfit would be really cute if her sleeves weren't rolled up like that. Or if her sleeves were short. And Paz* needs a union-jack patterned tophat. MAKE IT SO, TOM. About the insane plot twist we're anticipating, I want to believe it's not planned by the court. Lindsey doesn't seem like she'd be inclined to invite the kids on an awesome cruise only to ruin it for them for the sake of some experiment.
*I've already internalized that her name is pronounced Path, but now I almost spelled her name phonetically by accident XP

I don't think even the Court has that big pool around. With Lindsay swimming, I guess we can count out the Court holodeck... I guess? Tom is good at presenting innocuous plot hints in fillers, and I can actually understand the expectation of something interesting happening. I'd say Tom's the Whedon of webcomics, but I'm not sure the body count is high enough, yet.

Well, note the shirt buttons, on the left side as one would expect on women's shirt, also her pants have typical woman's cut. Her shoes, on the other hand are high heels, though the heels are rather wide. She's the dominating one for sure, maybe even intentionally, but still conventionally feminine. If she was trying to make a point, like going to full opposite of "headband of +5 straightness", she would have also worn some entirely different haircut ("taper cut", of course), starched collar with tie and men's shoes. The fact she did not overdo it is a good sight she is relatively OK with her sexuality. The only thing I see that even hints that sort of thing is the rolled sleeves. It is given that in that sort of event a girl would be expected to wear a dress though.

"Torn Ship" has to mean that at least one couple will break up. It's "Torn Sea", not ship. I wouldn't close out teen drama from the set-up, but lets not jump to conclusions.

I can see the shirt here as within the bounds of her personality, yes. As others have noted these are teens, and teens (heck, adults!) are often inspired to try and fit into social roles/niches. Before, Kat was trying to look like a 'straight female' which in her mind meant sticking a flowery headband on top of her regular clothes. Actually, come to think of it, I would likely have done something clueless like that. Now she has accepted that she likes girls as well as boys (Eglamore, Bird-Boy, Muut...) she may just be going at the same thing a different way, albeit as others have commented with quite the flair for a change; maybe Paz even gave her some Date's Eye for the Bi Gal advice/requests? Maybe both of them feel they will stick out less blatantly this way while dancing together, or just find it easier to dance than if both are wearing dresses with - as again someone noted - built in flares like Paz's? *heh* In any case, with the clothes and the arm around the waist, their relationship shouldn't be unknown to anyone after this!

Man, all these insights just from little details that I missed the first time around (the thumb print being in the moons shadow, Kat's high heels, etc) remind me that I need to seriously pay more attention to the artwork of a comic page. My natural inclinations when it comes to viewing art revolve far more around the written (English major), so much so that I often miss the little things like that which are so important. :/ On the other hand, I just realized, as lovely as it would be I'm not sure I'm counting on the rest of the kids on board being as accepting of Paz* and Kat's relationship as those we've seen thus far. To be fair though, I actually feel that it won't be a big deal, perhaps draw some surprise but little more. Nonetheless, if any sort of conflict did occur I could easily imagine Annie's temper flaring. Heaven knows what that would do to her already intense feeling of alienation. Then again, I have no doubt any sort of tension would also somehow involve Gamma and Zimmy, so this is also very unlikely. All in all I'm sure everyone will have a good time and this will be far more like "Faraway Morning" as others have suggested. My real reason for writing this was more to just take note of the fact that until now I hadn't even thought conflict as a result of such relationship details was even possible (within the comic), and to remind myself that unfortunately life does not always work that way. *Is her name really pronounced Path? I had assumed to her speaking Spanish, her kind and gentle demeanor, and her complexion were giveaways that she was of Spanish descent which would mean her name can be translated to "Peace" (from Spanish, and that this pronunciation sounds how it looks) which I thought fit her rather well. EDIT: aaaaand a quick trip to the wiki confirmed all of the above except for the pronunciation issue, of course.

You know, I got through this comic (and about two thirds of the thread) before I realized that Annie still doesn't know that Kat and Paz are dating; apparently Paz forgot for a second too! Did anyone else forget this? This is going to get awkward REALLY fast.

Did anyone else forget this? This is going to get awkward REALLY fast. No, Annie knows, but think - she has no one else to go to the dance with. Kat is really her only (school) friend at the moment. Plus it's a school dance, it'd be different if they were going clubbing and Annie invited herself along. As long as Annie can give them space when they need it, and everybody stays chill, it should turn out alright. Also, this page.
