Cutting the Gordian knot. I approve. Though I like the Mexican pronunciation better than the Spainish* one, personally. The 'th' sound that shows up all the time in Castelian spanish sounds odd to me. *yes, Spainish is a word now.

But if you listen, the 'o' in 'cot'...nowait, I have the cot-caught merger and I don't know which version of 'cot' they're using. Dagnabit. But still, that 'o' has an 'a' sound. Well colour me surprised, indeed it sounds as if non British people (excepting Bostonians) pronounce that with an "a" sound! Check the sound files on this page: en.wiktionary.org/wiki/cotThe Australian version is closest to how I pronounce cot Compare cat: en.wiktionary.org/wiki/cat

And another confirmation that those paintings won't be making a reappearence!
Also WHAT IS THIIII... I had never noticed robot's other arm there before, heh. And also the fact that the changing of stories over time had come into the comic much earlier than I remembered.

Tom also states that Kat's a sort of "joint-protagonist" with Annie rather than a mere supporting character - something that's become clearer as the comic proceeded. In the early chapters, Kat did seem more just like a close friend but not as prominent as Annie (especially since she doesn't get introduced until Chapter Two, has only a small role in Chapter Three and is off-stage in Chapter Four - though Annie and Kat standing together in the Treatises - including the first one - were a clue to that), but now she seems at times to be almost eclipsing Annie as the main character. I wonder how much of that Tom had foreseen when he was writing Chapter Two.

"Her name is Becky, Becky Ground. I don't know who this jerk is though." Haha. The asides are fun.

'this jerk' kind of looks like Aly Yeah, but that's the girls' dorm, so no guys allowed. I love these retrospectives, but I wish Tom had a better mike. I have sometimes hard time hearing what he's saying without straining my ears or putting the volume far too loud.

That in Reynardine's orignally design he was a bat is probably the most startling relevation. That was my favorite part as well - including Tom's drawing of Reynardine as a bat and looking extremely annoyed about it. While a lot of the "behind-the-scenes" information in these talks is already familiar thanks to Tom's comments, that one was new.

'this jerk' kind of looks like Aly Is she Aly's time-traveling mother? I like how Tom dispels wild fan theories/questions with a simple "I don't know who this jerk is".

Wow, Tom is pumping these retrospectives out so fast! When this started I was hopeful that he might give us one per week. We are already up to chapter four!
Pace yourself Tom! Although honestly I understand that the earlier chapters are much shorter and quicker to do. They also have a lot less stuff going on than later works.
These have been such a pleasure to watch. That "bat" revelation was stunning. Wolf was the wise choice. I also liked how he explained the "info dump" of Orjaks in the bonus page. I mean, we all liked it. And it makes sense that he would choose this way to do it, rather than have the characters spend half a chapter chatting about Orjaks. That would have been a waste of space. So... good choice from a storytelling standpoint. I think he makes good use of the bonus pages. (Yes, even Mort Fun TIME!)
When he did # 1, everyone was talking about his voice, his accent. I think it is interesting to hear how he laughs at some of the things he says, and is clearly pumped up by getting to talk about it. I hope he is having as much fun making these as we are in watching them.
Looking forward to Chapter five and the introduction of Zimmy and Gamma! I can't wait to hear what he has to say about those Two Strange Girls.

He's also mentioned the paintings in FormSpring answers (and I think his old Word of Tom thread).

Eheh. I never noticed that current social interactions for Z&G is limited, as opposed to this chapter. But it kinda feels right, since, they still keep to themselves anyway.

As I've said elsewhere, their self-imposed isolation does have a metafictional touch (reflecting their originally being conceived independently of "Gunnerkrigg Court"). Tom's posted the talk on Chapter Six - describing it as not only the point where Annie first starts to show emotion, but also when he and Kat truly become friends rather than just classmates who hang out together.

Tom's piece on Chapter Seven is now up. A lot more discussion on the art of the comic (specifically his decision to do minimalist backgrounds) than I'd expected, though natural since this is a comic. Also a bit about the point behind the Treatises (including a mention of Kat in the first Treatise making a hand symbol that represents a crane, as a foreshadowing of "A Week For Kat").

In case others like myself had difficulty understanding the phrase at 00:23, I think it's "a bit of in medias res" . I first heard it as invideas res but Google was definitely not my friend until I used www.google.com/ncr to disable its annoying country redirect. Hope this helps other Google sufferers.

"In media res". Ah, that takes me back to when I was around twelve or thirteen and reading up eagerly on the conventions of classical epics; "in media res", epic throw-back, catalogues of leaders, extended similes, etc.

I loved the retrospective on chapter 6: A handful of dirt.
I am one of those people that looks back on that chapter fondly and indeed, I consider it one of the best. It was a real turning point in Tom's storytelling, and was very moving.

Heck yeah! The treatise! I definitely looked forward to it and was not disappoint! Interesting that pages like that would have been use by alchemists as a sort of wordless instruction guide for their creations.
This is the kind of stuff I like!

Tom just put up his retrospective on Chapter Eight on YouTube (giving a lot of focus on the earlier comic idea he'd had about urban fairies in Birmingham - I hope he doesn't get a lot of angry letters from "City Face" fans over his description of pigeons as "rats with wings", though he was just mentioning how other people view them, not necessarily how he views them).

So the city fairies are like rats. I did not expect that! Now I really hope Tom can tell their story too.

The bonus in the latest one is superb.
Exactly what I always wanted in the main comic but never got.
