Don't worry, Mort! Jones will shield you with her mighty body! ... Bye Mort. (Stamp of Jim North approval)

noone3I'd find it absolutely hilarious if that were the case. "I found the detonation at the Trinity Site to be quite superior to the munitions I had encountered up to that point, but still woefully short of my expectations considering the Hype. For all their ingenuity, Humans seem destined to never replicate the sheer *oomph* of the Chicxulub impact; which despite my presence in the immediate impact site being entirely coincidental, was nonetheless rather thrilling." Jones is probably more of an exaton kinda girl. Just watch, she'll help incite the first true nuclear war, just for the hope of a good massage. She convinced humanity to build the LHC so she could have a nice bath of high-energy particles. Very refreshing.

Well, Mort is either going to die this early, or Jones will show some badassery and hopefully shield him with her body. It doesn't look like they are right at ground zero though, so the shockwave+debris from the nearby building seems to be the main danger. I think if Jones acts, Mort could live and escape wounded with Jones... I'm going to go with that one. Really, I just wish to see Jones display some awesomeness with stone-cold stoicism.

D-d-did you see the frightened ones? D-d-did you hear the falling bombs? D-d-did you ever wonder why we had to run for shelter When the promise of a brave new world unfurled beneath a clear blue sky?

My wildspecs : next panel will show us Antimony in the dusty fumes, picturing the scene from Mort's story. After that, the RRRROOOOO sound will be replaced by the ambulance's sounds, and Annie's face still frozen on a blank face. And then, the angriness and the rage against Jones because "why didn't she..." but Mort will see it happening and try to calm down Annie with "She couldn't do much for me, it was really too late, hadn't she be there I would have ended lost in the limbo ! But instead, I was brought to the ROTD and became the ghost that you know !"

Wow, that's cold Jones.
And really there is not much she could do to save Mort, although she is indestructible she is too small to be a shelter. However it was her fault he was there, he went to try and save her, if she had not been there he would be in the shelter by now. I would guess she feels some responsibility.

Is... is that a face in the last panel, Ms. Jones? I rather think it is. I think it is too and I'm not totally surprised. I believe Annie's right and Jones is not quite as emotionless as she claims.

Well, that was quick. And not. For us, the bomb will fall the entire weekend. Slow terror inching forward to Mort. I wonder, if Tom will be graphic with the gore or the fear. The next panel could be Mort's frantic and desperate panic to escape. Running nowhere, anywhere. Then, there's the detonation. He could quick-cut to him being a ghost, and spare us the bloody ordeal. Or not.
Pity, though. I really liked the "suffocate in caved-in shelter" scenario. It would have been interesting in how Jones responded to people slowly facing their end. Her unable to help, either choosing not act, or being careful not to cause more collapse.

Now the question is was Jones there for business or pleasure? Seems possible she is her own best research tool. Understanding the capabilities of the enemy's weaponry is pretty powerful intelligence to gather.

I'm looking forward to gathering more information on Jones. I think it is too and I'm not totally surprised. I believe Annie's right and Jones is not quite as emotionless as she claims. This may be, but I doubt that she is human enough to be treated as a human or even a superhuman. I think that a more accurate classification would be as a force of nature or similar. I'm taking the approach that she's only as human as specifically proven.

The RRRRRR sound in panels 4-6 are not the sirens, but the engine of the V1 (getting louder, btw) - once it runs out of gas in panel 7, it falls.

I hope it's not too gory. I imagine it's going to be a fade/flash to white, or something similar... or maybe a pan-out. This page gave me chills and feels. Well done, Tom.

I like how the bomb is slightly colored. It was already noticed that Mort's memory is coloring everything significant, while fading the background. Lovely artistic touch. Sad, though.

The contrast between the tone of Tom's comments and the tone of the comic has made me laugh an unreasonable amount so far this chapter. (And I really need to stop reading them around other people.)

Uh, what a way to go, Mort. On the upside, perhaps we soon see the ROTD from his perspective.

Generally, by the time a layman can discern that he really does need to run away from a specific gravity bomb (or V-1), it's too late to do so. And we have no evidence that either Jones or Mortimer is possessed of super-speed. The RRRRRR sound in panels 4-6 are not the sirens, but the engine of the V1 (getting louder, btw) - once it runs out of gas in panel 7, it falls. Technically, that isn't how it usually happened. The V-1 ran on a timer, and when the timer ran out it went into a steep dive. (The timer also was used to arm the bomb while in flight. That way if one crashed on takeoff, there was a good chance the bomb would *not* blow up.) It was SUPPOSED to be a power-dive. But in early versions there was a design error in the fuel system and the steep dive cut off the fuel supply. So when it fell, it ran out of gas. Not the other way around. This defect was later fixed. Granted, if one ever did run out of fuel, it would then fall.

It turns out that because that bomb in the last panel is shooting overhead at dozens of meters per second, it sails over them and detonates several blocks away from them...
Yeah, it's gonna be like that, huh Tom?

Not pleasant.

Damn, Jones. (Supports the "huge jerk" theory, huh?) Why, she is just honest. The way she is shown to us, she would help if she could. Mort simply does not have a chance. Jonesy looks a bit troubled in the last panel there. I believe Annie's right and Jones is not quite as emotionless as she claims. I agree. Maybe not the saddest face, but sad enough. kralex I think that was kind of a tooly thing to say I had to look up tooly, but still don't understand. Bad taste? On this forum? Worst thing that can be said is that the joke was already made in the last thread. But tastes differ of course.

Jones, cold? I must respectfully disagree. Jones is H-O-T, hawt!Well, Jones is pretty much the temperature of her surroundings (she doesn't eat so I assume she doesn't generate heat). If she had a circulatory system, I'd say she's cold blooded. Emotionless (i.e. "cold" like philman implied) - is how she describes herself. But like Annie, I have a slightly different opinion.
