The fact that Annie has the exact same body language in these strips tells me that this is the most likely explanation. Plus I don't really see Tom doing a "Jealousy!" plotline, unless it's incredibly brief and a red-herring and Kat's just wildly misinterpreting things. Body language? She a badly visible stick figure. Also jealousy is what prompted Paz to confess to Kat so why can't Annie be jealous too.

Anyway I can see tension rising when both girls believe their lot in life is the harder one, yet each views the other as having abandoned their friendship for things they view as "easier" or more fun. Annie sees Kat smooching on hot ladies, doesn't understand what an emotional minefield dating is. Kat sees Annie running around in the woods, doesn't get the whole "lighting yourself on fire to save a wolf god that once tried to kill you" aspect. Classic scenario of two friends no longer sharing the same interests. This. The ambiguous blah of teenage drama. The more uncertain things are, the more certain they'll feel painful. As if, uncertainty were its fuel. If people would just ask questions and communicate, so much hurt could be avoided. But then, happy people make for boring stories. I'm going with Annie pretending it's 3, but it's actually 4 and maybe a little 6. Who's to say, Annie will know how she actually feels? Ambiguity is the fuel for the terrible fire.

I interpret this as leading into a chapter like 32, but with the roles reversed. Not sure where that puts me on the list of possibly outcomes...
That, or option 8: Paz just drugged Kat in the last panel. The next day, Kat wakes up missing a kidney.

Oh man, just imagine if suddenly A&K are mad at each other but have to share a room. I guess that means more sleepovers with Paz? (Or at the Donlan house)

Actually yeah, I can see this as exactly where this is going, with annie going to sulk at Renard for a bit, while he acts incredulous that she didn't already know.

I think that those of you who are saying Annie is jealous in a "Just Friends Way" or are saying Annie is in no way running cause she's seeing the girl she loves with another girl. Are horribly wrong. It's pretty obvious where this is going. And its just the beginning. Honey I've been reading this comic page by page every single update like clockwork for seven years now. In that time I have seen exactly zero long-term story predictions turn out correct. Some things in this world may be "obvious" but the plot of Gunnerkrigg Court is not one of them.

I totally think Annie's just giving them space. I mean, that 'running away' frame looks JUST LIKE the "I have to go find... a book" awkward walking away. Annie has a good heart, I know she'll be happy for Kat.

Actually yeah, I can see this as exactly where this is going, with annie going to sulk at Renard for a bit, while he acts incredulous that she didn't already know. Would she tell Renard? She might be mad at Kat, for not telling her sooner or whatever (it's much more complicated than that), but she wouldn't want to break Kat's trust. Maybe he would instinctively know what's going on and give her subtle advice? Whatever happens, I don't think Renard would stand for them to not be friends over something like this... I can just imagine the talking Annie would get. Oh and I can't see Tom giving his readers a canon queer relationship only to go the "evil lesbian" route or anything like it (Paz being used by the court, etc) How could Paz have known Annie was behind her anyway?

Oh Kat what do you think Annie was going to do line up with the other robots and keep watching. Annie probably ran away because she has to pay up to Renard.
No, Annie or anyone else would have left that scene quickly. Annie must be feeling shocked and she might be wondering (if she didn't know already) when Kat started to like girls. She'll remember the love letter and she might be worried about being left out.

I've been thinking...is there possibly something nefarious afoot? I wouldn't have thought as much of Paz, except that she pulled Kat right back in just as she was about to let go... I really wonder what causes this level of paranoid thinking when reading GKC, wacky coincidences happen way more frequently than nefarious plots in this story that I've read.

Geez... That's just...no. I wonder why this was? Did she run away just to give them privacy?

Downerbot: Tactile sensory organs seem like a poor way to transfer information. A high speed USB port would be much more efficient.
On a more serious note- the reason Annie ran (skedaddled?) away is because it's AWKWARD. Seriously, have you ever walked in on a friend making out (or worse)? If not, lucky you. But I can attest that about 95% of people's initial reaction is "WellIguessthat'shappeningI'lljustgothiswayASFASTASICANhavefunbesafe". (the remaining 5% goes in for a high-five)

When Kat said on the first page of the chapter that they're gonna do the tests once Annie gets back from her medium stuff, it made me think this chapter happens simultaneous with the previous one. Considering that bonus page, it somehow made me think that what Kat just saw is not the real Annie. Hmm. They're all wearing different clothes to what they were in Crash Course, so clearly time has passed. As for Annie's reaction I see to going one of two ways. Either she's ran off and will return after Paz goes, pretending nothing happened. It's plausible for her to think that Kat may not have noticed her (she's a longish distance away and had her eyes closed for most of the kiss). Alternatively she's running away because she's feeling a maelstrom of different emotions (some of them negative) and doesn't know how to deal with that right now. Both can be played in different ways, depending on what Tom wants to do. Can't wait for Friday.

Maybe Annie's running off to bake a cake.

"my best friend is gay" is quite bland compared to "my best friend is a cyborg goddess" , or "my pet dog has tried to kill me and was once in love with my mother" Well, when you put it THAT way, it does seem kind of silly...

Maybe Annie's running off to bake a cake. I immediately thought of that too I for one am of the "OWOW THIS IS AWKWARD" running away group, but Annie's body language in the third panel (arms limp, legs wide, full-on facing) also indicates she's been standing there watching for a while. I think she was probably just a little shocked and maybe morbidly curious to see how long they were gonna keep this up. Considering the court keeps its students divided by sex, this could be the first mackin' Annie's witnessed in person. Alternately, she didn't think they'd keep going this long and had decided to just kind of make her entrance a little later. Idk, I had these two friends who would make out in public like when we were supposed to be hanging out all the time, but even if we were at one of their houses and I just walked in on them making out in the kitchen I just turned and walked out because goddangit I don't wanna watch y'all slobberin on each other's faces geezus that's not what I'm here for. I think Kat's gonna think it's 3 and 4, but it's actually going to be 1 and 2. I also doubt Paz realized Annie was there. Her back is to Annie. I think she just thought Kat was pulling away and that was a "No wait I'm not finished yet" grab. On another note, geez, girls, slow down. I'm getting uncomfortable, and I learned to deal with Make Out Friends

My guess: Annie is going to go into a newly-revealed part of the forest and burn the hell out of whatever tries to go after her. We may only see this from Kat's perspective, i.e. as she's going back to the dorms a there's a hella large fire in the woods. Hey, it's about as likely as everyone else's guess!

A conservative interpretation of what is happening here is that Annie is absenting herself to kindly afford her friend some privacy.
This is still what I think is the short end of a wedge; Annie has deliberately avoided contact with her best friend (albeit with good intentions), and Kat more or less ignores her best friend (albeit for understandable reasons).
In the Treatises, Annie and Kat have always been depicted as embodying two different, opposing forces, despite the closeness they exhibited in the story itself. Now Annie is closer to the forest then ever as its medium, and Kat is closer to the ethic of the Court than ever in her increasing role as creator of artificial life.
If something, however innocuous like one of the friends having her first real love affair and the other wishing to respect this, separates the two, I suspect that other forces in their lives may work to sustain and expand the gap.
ANNIE VS. KAT
COURT OR FOREST?
LET'S ROCK!

OK, I'm seriously getting worried now. What if Paz really is up to no good? I really hope that isn't the case, when this is such a positive relationship within the comic. I'd like to think we can have a few characters who don't have hidden motives and just want some action. It wouldn't really be school without that.
