Suddenly the missing ear, and why he'd cripple his real body for tree power armor, makes a whole lot more sense.

I am sensing an impending butt kicking. Or at least something flashy. And fiery.

Almost looks like he is staring at Annie and saying "A little help here!?" Though wordlessly.
Anyone want to bet Annie is going to go all Phoenix spirit on them?

He's been missing an ear since he first showed up to speak with the Headmaster. I don't recall saying otherwise. What pushed him in to accepting such a crazy gift was always a mystery. Becoming Tree Bark just to fight Leggo My Eggos didn't make much sense, but the comic never really went in to what other threats he could have to fight. Till now, anyway. I imagine he lost his ear to these same guys at some point. Of course, now we're left wondering exactly who these guys are and why they need to be kept in line like this.

The transition from the last page to this page is somehow odd to me. When oh when did Annie get to that rock rubble when there were none nearby last page? It kinda made me feel like the entire sequence with the Wisp had never tangibly happened, with what those little bubbles of daze floating and popping about Annie.

Well see soon if basser is right about that a display of power (and some fireballs) will get their attention and get their initial respect and then maybe these guys will act nice?

Nope, I just saw how that one seems to like going after the ear. Probably got the other one at some point. I forget if Eggers ever denied doing it to him, but it never struck me as the kind of blow he'd strike. Much more an animalistic wound. It seems a fairly safe bet this is what happened. I get the feeling this is a semiregular occurrence. One Ys has been slowly losing ground on for a while. The transition from the last page to this page is somehow odd to me. When oh when did Annie get to that rock rubble when there were none nearby last page? It kinda made me feel like the entire sequence with the Wisp had never tangibly happened, with what those little bubbles of daze floating and popping about Annie. Yeah, seems she was pulled in to the ether long before her scar ever showed up. From what we know of Coyote, the ether seems to bend somewhat to belief. Another word for that could be expectation. She expected it to be normal so it was, maybe? At least until it became obvious something was wrong.

She expected it to be normal so it was, maybe? At least until it became obvious something was wrong. I suppose you're right. Certainly though, to be unexpectedly and unassumingly pulled into the ether like that makes me glad I don't exist in their world, to be quite honest. Anyone hazard an intellectual rationalisation as to who might have done so to Annie? Coyote or the wisp? Mine would be that of Coyote, since that entire sequence was essentially a lesson in deception and how one should always be cautious. I suppose it could be possible that the wisp could do it too, which would mean that its own power is something of a wonder, having pulled Annie into the ether like that. It is entirely possible that the wisp was part of the menagerie that approached Ys and Annie, and it had "captured" her while she was focussing on Ys. If that were the case, though, that would imply that Coyote did a stealth hi in both physical and ethereal realm, and a stealth bye in the physical without even appearing to Annie (or anyone) in said realm after dealing with the wisp. Possible as Coyote is trickster god, or that Coyote may also have simply done so without actually having to go near. This though would confuse me all the more of Coyote's intentions. Then again, there's always that "thinking too hard about it" business, and it's just Coyote merely just amusing himself. I don't know...

Sometimes a cigar is just a cigar.
The simplest explanation is coincidence. The wisp happened to be there, and Annie was suddenly without Tree Bark warding off looky loos. You don't want to be unaware in the forest without an escort. Not saying there can't be more, but this is one of the few times the comic has a simple possibility for something happening. Not everything is a conspiracy. Just most things.

She was behind the same rock when the wisp-wasp first called for her. Which suggests, no, which pretty much affirms that she didn't physically move anywhere but was pulled into the etheric realm by that call, so she followed the wisp-wasp to a "safe place" in the etheric.

Man, I sure hope we get a debriefing on the whole wisp-wasp situation after this fight is over.

1. So Coyote was in the ether, hunting ether things. As an ether being is wont to do.
2. Monsters made a pie from Ysengrin's ear, and washed it down with a bottle of beer.

Put me down for team Annie Didn't Move at All. Bam, you got it, eureka! Man those wisps are tricky buggers. Although zimmyzims, it's possible that she was pulled into a dream first, before being pulled into the ether. They never said ether can't touch your dreams. Also hoping that the next page will be awesomely fiery. Poor Ys is looking a bit overwhelmed. I hope this chapter ends with Annie having gained this rabble's fear of her, if not respect.

We shouldn't forget about the effects of another "character" present, that is The Ruins. The boundary between the physical and etheric could be thin in that spot. That may even be why those monsters are gathered there. maybe she will throw a fire spike at them, like a ninja I'm waiting for her to scream "Hadouken!"

I dunno, Tom draws in a certain style whenever we see the ether and we always see her scar whenever we see her in the ether, I don't really think there's anything more to the scar than that. So I'm guessing Coyote teleported her back to that spot.

At first Annie's blinking had me thinking that something magical fell into her eye like the shards of the magic troll mirror in Andersen's "Snow Queen". However her identical position seems to imply being pulled into ether and not moving at all. Also, the first time Annie entered the ether in the forest she was similarly disoriented so maybe a parallel? (http://www.gunnerkrigg.com/?p=681)

That explains the white glow in the last page. Maybe Ysengrin will say he was just pretending to be weakening to get Annie to join in the fight.
