Hmm. Putting something down the side may be a bit crowded and a bit long for small height screens, but I'll have a play and see what I can do and how it looks. Meanwhile I'll stick in a simple top bar [Chapter: 1 2 3 … 42] for now.

Looks good! we have a way of jumping down now  Had a quick thought- on the chapter titles, what about having the prev/next buttons just be an up-triangle ▲ or arrow ↑ and a down-triangle ▼ or ↓ (in order: ▲ ▼ ↑ ↓) |

Prev / Next: Yes I looked at various Up and Down indicators, as well as variations on < and >
To my eye it still makes the otherwise clean chapter separators (line/title/line) look cluttered, even when I spaced the various components widely.
What was the real killer though, I think, was that I also have a lot of dissonance as to which direction of indicator should be on which side of the chapter title. It’s due to the blog-ordering of course: newest at top. That confounds all my expectations that UP is BACK and should be synonymous the even stronger LEFT is BACK presumption. Blog-ordered UP is FORWARD – and which side should it be on?
(Mr Western Defaults, me…)
Thinking about it again now, though, I didn’t try an Up/Down pair together on one side, scroll arrow stylee. That might work.

ok, i'm clearly having problems motivating myself. perhaps we need to try a different tack? how about reviewing all the tags that only have one mention so far, making sure we either have all the mentions or deciding if they need to be merged or whether they're significant?
also, perhaps work out which chapters have the least tags and review them first?

I'll likely update with the new pages every few days if no one else does, but I've been back giving Misfile a little more love the last few days rather than second-passing here - there's only me there dealing with 2300 pages, and at least two other people here…

On tag rationalisation: the only ones I'd delete are those that don't appear in the main story e.g the named black dogs, other than Moddey Dhoo. Most others can be merges - e.g. Zeta and Zimmy. For the several psychopomps that just appear on that single hospital flashback page maybe add another line to the description with some bracketed entries - I've used e.g. (marble) where I wasn't sure the marble deserved a tag as such but wanted to leave it findable in case something came up and I changed my mind. Or: "Use the text search, Luke!" Spankies could include nose-flicks later so it would have a (2) count LaundryList the seagull I think only appears in one CityFace? Teacher /Teachers - I think we already agreed to merge generic singlular & plurals. - I see there are some updates in GitHub so I'll just pop off a quick… Tag rationalisation I'd suggest discussing a few at a time just so we can concentrate on nthe individual cases - 50 is too many. |

A thought- clickable links on the chapter titles in the index to the chapter pages on gunnerkrigg.com themselves? Could do easily enough of course, but it duplicates the link on the page number. What I've just started to do over on the Misfile Index page is to give Book (= Chapter here) entries rough dates for their coverage and some subtitles to main incidents/threads of the book. This is a bit subjective at present so after I've made a first pass I'll poke the Misfile forum and get some feedback. Has the advantage of giving more meat to the Book entries so I can do away with one of the HR tags, making it a but clearer what pages are what chapter and, addressing what I suspect is your concern here, more clearly associates the page number and its link with the Book/Chapter description. Would a similar layout and information change here be helpful, or are Gunnerkrigg chapters too short, at up to 30 pages (vs Misfiles 120+) for it to be worthwhile? Date and passage of time isn't really much of a concern in Gunnerkrigg as far as I can tell, but how about the summary shorts? Chapter 1 might be summarised thus: Arrival — the shadow — the robot — the bridgeand Chapter 2: Kat — mythology class – the library — the labyrinth — the minotaur |
