Wow! I feel like she has some long history- like, as in longer than the average human would. But there's not really any basis for this- I was thinking about Coyote's name for her, but Coyote has nicknamed Annie, too. I kind of hate to say this, but maybe she IS a robot, just because Tom has denied this so hilariously and often.

I kind of hate to say this, but maybe she IS a robot, just because Tom has denied this so hilariously and often. Jones and Reynardine have both denied that Jones is a robot. (In-comic, obviously.) Jones made no further comment on what she is. Reynardine implied that he doesn't know what she is, by expressing doubt that even Coyote knows.

Ysengrin, apparently, told Annie what Jones is, or "tried to". So, in theory, Annie knows - or at least knows what meager and incorrect explanation Ysengrin provided.

That page makes me believe that Antimony doesn't think much of what Ysengrin had to say about Jones. Perhaps it had some good data but she doesn't accept his conclusions. (Of course, we don't actually know what he had to say, so it's hard to judge.)

I love this thread. I have to admit, of all the twists and turns, Jones has always intrigued me most (and Jeanne a close second ) But one thing I've always thought is that perhaps Jones steals forms. I don't know what she is and if she was a shapeshifter/ stealer of... um... forms, then she can obviously live in that form without abiding by the normal rules (eg, I'm pretty confident that she looked exactly the same when she taught Surma and Eggy etc as kids, and hasn't aged or changed at all... but that might just be me ;D ) However, that wouldn't explain why she is so impenetrable to pointy swords/ heavy (I still think she is abnormally heavy... jumping into the water and walking across the lake's bed/ Rey's comment about her weight/ effortlessly punching through concrete just seem too deliberate to me) etc. I think she is a very old being that has perhaps changed forms throughout her lifetime, or even just been around so long that she has had to change names (Jones wouldn't be so appropriate for a mythological being, but Wandering Eye isn't so appropriate for a school teacher..) I'm just thinking aloud. Also, about Reynard expressing doubt that even Coyote knows- in my mind, especially seeing him call her 'Wandering Eye', that reflects more as 'he couldn't quite explain why or how she exists' rather than 'I don't actually know what she is'. Ergh, I'm phrasing that really badly... what I'm trying to say I guess, is that I think Coyote knows what she is but perhaps doesn't fully understand it... or something. If Ysengrin can attempt to explain what she is, then I'm sure coyote knows... but perhaps there are elements of knowing that still aren't quite explained. We kind of know that there are black holes and that they appear to consume matter, but we don't really know why or how they exist. Man, it's hard to explain half-formed ideas ;D

This formspring'd answer is open to interpretation but I believe it confirms that Jones is not a character directly lifted from mythology, as previously speculated.

Edit: Hm, of course, this would mean that Eggers is hot for teacher.

Yes, he did. On Formspring he said that there was no relation between Jones and Jeanne whatsoever.

With luck, the next chapter gives some more Jones. Have we seen Jones at all since www.gunnerkrigg.com/archive_page.php?comicID=827? That's 148 strips ago, so almost 50 weeks ago now... when you consider how much plot movement we had down 2010 with Spring Heeled, The Coward Heart and Fire Spike, 2011 has been a bit slow in that regard. Not by any means unenjoyable, I hasten to add. It's just that the plot didn't move forward much and some favourite characters didn't really appear as this year's chapters focused heavily on character development and maturity (or lack of it) for Annie and Kat.

This might be a bit off-topic, but was inspired by rafk's post just above, and was something I had been thinking for a while about Tom's slowing down the plot.
In the Shakespeare course I took at college, the teacher pointed out that "As You Like it" starts off with a flurry of events (such as the wrestling match between Orlando and Charles, Oliver and Duke Frederick scheming against the protagonists, etc.), but these exist purely as a device to get the cast into the Forest of Arden. Once they're there, the external threats die away and the play shifts to a series of dialogues between the various characters about love, melancholy, etc., the real heart of the play. (With the threats from Oliver and Duke Frederick wrapped up at the end, once it's time to finish the play.)
Maybe the many plot-events of the first two years (in internal chronology) of "Gunnerkrigg Court" had the similar purpose of just introducing the characters and the setting, and now that they've become firmly established, Tom is slowing down the story to focus on the characters themselves, rather than the events and intrigues at the Court and the tensions between Gunnerkrigg and Gilltie. (Most of the threads might not be resolved until Annie's final year at Court, anyway, which is still four years off.)

Thus sayth Formspring: Q: Is Coyote's name for Jones "Wandering Eye" a reference or allusion to any sort of mythology? (I.E. Chang'e is a reference to the Chinese Goddess of the Moon) If so what culture? A: No, it's a name I made up for the comic. It's not a reference to existing mythology I'm still thinking Jones is a version of Galatea (though one not directly lifted from mythology, see my previous post on this page).

Fact: Coyote never lies. Fact: Coyote called Jones "Wandering Eye". Fact: Coyote can detach his eyes. Fact: Coyote can detach body parts and have them take forms that look like other things, such as swords.
Hypothesis: Jones is literally one of Coyote's eyes, that he detached and gave a human (sort of) form, so he can spy on the Court.
Jones is probably so heavy because Coyote is probably much bigger than any of the forms he has shown us so far.

Jones is probably so heavy because Coyote is probably much bigger than any of the forms he has shown us so far. Doesn't really explain her lack of allegiance to any side, nor the fact that he goes so far as to freeze time to talk to Annie without Jones knowing. Why would he need to conceal information from one of his own body parts? Nah. We kind of know that there are black holes and that they appear to consume matter, but we don't really know why or how they exist. Holy balls Jones is the personification of a black hole.Mind = blown. As for her being called a Wandering Eye... some black holes wander around the galaxy being pulled by random gravity fields. They are super dense, super heavy, break shit all over the place, and don't give a single crap about anything. Dunno about the name changing bit but hell give it enough time and I bet we can fan-wank an explanation. YES. BEST THEORY.

I dunno, maybe Jones is just one of his manifestations, a rogue homunculus or expression of Coyote's more serious self.

According to Formspring, the possibility of her receiving an education in the 'ethereal sciences' outside the Court exists, which would certainly explain both some of her abilities and her somewhat ambivalent stance on the dispute with the forest. I would not discount her being 'human' (albeit a human whose dabbling on the ethereal may have had unforeseen consequences) just yet.
I expect a backstory explaining more into her demeanour at some point to be revealed to the audience. I'll wait until then for the most part.

All this talk of Jones' weight being because of Coyote's true size, and of Jones possibly being a homunculus, puts me in the mind of Fullmetal Alchemist. Actually, my new theory is that Jones is a homunculus. Actually, my favorite theory is that Jones is just a human who did something very strange a long time ago, but who knows. I'm being vague because there's still a lot that hasn't been explained yet, and I can't really be any more specific.

Not wanting to be mean, or anything, but could we keep the wild theorising about Jones and her weight problems to the "Wild Speculation" thread, and reserve this thread for actual facts, please?

Hi! This thread is relevant to my interest because Jones so I dedicate my first post here. Just read the comic yesterday, in one go. BUT ANYWAY. www.formspring.me/gunnerkrigg/q/282787403150663285Everyone knows what Jones is, s'ppose that's safe to assume from that? And I'm not sure if anyone pointed this out yet, but the scene where Jones breaks the wall resembles a Chinese martial art, a real one at that, or if anyone else who watches Kill Bill. Okay, so I'm not saying it's possible to punch through concrete but then again this is a comic where you have a guy (that is Eglamore) who jumps from roof to roof. Why can't she be just a normal woman that is super powered- wait. So anyhow, she's not normal from the sound of these: www.formspring.me/gunnerkrigg/q/278290346616554255www.formspring.me/gunnerkrigg/q/278290399146021824And it would also seem that she doesn't need food or whathaveyous Anyway, as Tom said she is his creation, I guess the guess should be her "purpose" rather than what she "is"

No, no, not a homunculus. I think Jones is a master alchemist who accidentally trapped her younger sister in a suit of armor while trying to bring their deceased mother back to life and came to the Court to try and learn a way to restore her body, and she weighs more because she's carrying the weight of both of their souls, and she can do awesome things because she glimpsed Truth during the failed transmutation. Her emotional deadness is heroic BSOD, "wandering eye" is her alchemist name, and doesn't mind getting wet or dirty, cause whe can transmute it all away if it gets uncomfortable.

Methinks she is a Court experiment to create some form of superior human, either through bioengineering or as a biomechanoid. Which would explain why Coyote didn't know what she is, as she is a creation of the Court.

So: Older than she looks (which can simply mean she's good with makeup) is not a creation of the court. Her body is not flesh and blood. Question on if she is a homunculus, robot, or something in between was essentially evaded. Was not taught by the court. Is damn near immortal. has no secret or forgotten surname (Just Jones, as in faerie naming) Question about her family is evaded. appears younger then the Dololans (which may only mean appearance) the headmaster has been at the court longer. heavier than she looks. way heavier. I'm betting that she is a really big and powerful forest... creature (maybe nearly as powerful as Coyote) that is currently inhabiting a human-shaped body. Having to be compressed down to fit into that body could explain why she is so dens and can punch through a wall. Could possibly be a form of punishment that she is either resigned to and/or had stripped her of her etheric prowness and/or personality.
