Huh, not sure what that visual metaphor means--he controls the strings of fate? When I first saw the page, it reminded me a little of the whitelegs' webs, but I don't think there's a connection. (And Annie finds a new way to mispronounce "Suffle"s name--is she even trying to get it right anymore?)

So... these colored threads going out from Smitty - do they mean that the purple-haired girl is using Andrew's life force or something for her efforts of "making the place more comfy"?

Slightly off-topic, and probably explained before, but: does <Snuffle> having silver eyes in her physical form, rather than white, indicate that she is not a "hollow" fairy like Red and Blue, but a fairy with her soul inside of her body? Or is there some other significance to it? (Looking at the page on Regional Fairies (http://www.gunnerkrigg.com/?p=148), all of the examples have white eyes, even Ogee, so maybe that's normal even for the non-hollow ones.) (Edit: I decided to not be so lazy and did a forum search; it was mentioned in this thread: gunnerkrigg.proboards.com/thread/2798/1478-come-show)

My guess is, this is part of his abilities. He is able to pull some serious ether strings to influence the probabilities to his favour. This ties in with his statement earlier. Pull too hard and you are going to 'destroy' someone else's faith/destiny or something similar. In general, I think this is wonderful. In the ether, everyone is so small that the tables are looking like grey pavillons. Once more, the artwork is lovely!

Annie is also reminded of that, if her worried expression is a clue. Seems more like Smitty controls the order of chaos with those. Someone always pulls the strings... Most likely. Because Smitty is all grey - so where his magic (pretty powerful and possibly always active) is?

On the one hand, the etheric representation of Smitty's ability as a puppet master's strings is baaaad news (hilariously juxtaposed with how unaware he is of it), on the flip side it suggests an etheric counter to the effect if Annie needs to go there.
I'll be honest, I want to see Smitty go bad and Annie counter him just so she can say "There are no strings on me".

I'll be honest, I want to see Smitty go bad and Annie counter him just so she can say "There are no strings on me". We don't know if the strings are flammable, yet. And she'll have to borrow James Spader's voice to do it of course. I don't see it, honestly. The only thing in common is the presence of a yellow flower. The others are all different, I think. Someone's welcome to do an actual image comparison to disprove me Seems more like Smitty controls the order of chaos with those. Someone always pulls the strings... Most likely. Because Smitty is all grey - so where his magic (pretty powerful and possibly always active) is? I wonder if his abilities are artificial or natural. To me (personally) it looks like something grafted to him rather than being his. But future pages will reveal more info...It also doesn't have the "petroglyph" scrawl that shows up in some natural abilities (including those of Ysengrin, Coyote, Renard, and <Suffle>*), which might be relevant. *pronounced incorrectly So... these colored threads going out from Smitty - do they mean that the purple-haired girl is using Andrew's life force or something for her efforts of "making the place more comfy"? I'm getting serious Wheel of Time and Incarnations of Immortality vibes here, heh.

My current pet headcanon: Smitty is capable of much more powerful reality warping than he's aware of at the moment (because he's moving his Strings by instinct). He'll see his strings as soon as Annie awakens him into the ether in the next few pages (possibly with a "AHH! GET THEM OFF OF ME!" reaction). Then he'll begin to learn to refine the use of his powers (just like we saw for Parley a while ago). For that matter, it's canon that Parley still has untapped powers too. I wonder how Coyote would interact with these strings. Just curious. Also, there's a thought that occurred to me upon seeing this page: presumably, Annie's seen Smitty in the ether before. Coyote and the Forest denizens have definitely seen him there in Chapter 48. Why has there been no comment on his unusual appearance? Perhaps this is the first time his powers have visibly manifested in the Ether (as he subconsciously uses his powers for...something)? An earlier post on his powers for reference. I predict that Friday's page will either be an info-dump or a full-page picture of Smitty in his etheric guise (like the famous RoboKat one).

It's possible it is not necessary to be magical yourself (so, Smits is gray and presumably can't enter the ether) to otherwise influence the ether / do magic. That sounds like Court's way, by the way - they screw with ether using machines, fer crissakes (unless, I dunno, those machines have a Terrible Secret in that they use an enslaved fairy as a "connector" or something... but nah, that would be pretty boring) I wonder how Coyote would interact with these strings. Just curious. Cats. Yarn.

Someone's welcome to do an actual image comparison to disprove me I also noticed the stylistic similarities. Maybe a bouquet of colorful flowers represents life/goodness. We see Smitty's flowers on this page through Annie's ether vision. We saw the flower-heart Kat is going to give Robot through Robot's imagination. If Robot is able to imagine flowers that are similar to Smitty's, does that indicate the bot's, or at least Robot's, growing connection with the ether? ... or Smitty is just a boring non-etheric object that the Foley students are trying to cover up by hanging colorful strands on him and putting flowers on his head. The motes of light/color seem to be coming from the purple-haired student to the flowers. Maybe someone will put an etheric "Kick Me" sign on Smitty's back.

...Oh! His right hand! It's always been his right hand! Hmm, I think that MIGHT be reaching a little, it's more likely he is just right handed? Although that would mean that he uses his right hand for more things inclusing his powers I suppose.

Now, I really do wonder what a "colored" body means. Anja seems grey while in the Ether, and she can use the blinker stone. Is there an Etheric threshold of glowing goodness, or do you need to be born with it? I've noticed in the past, Rey's toy body is grey but his spirit is not. Maybe, it's a matter of wearing your Etheric "skin" on your sleeve. If Coyote can see the strings, perhaps he can cut them? That would make Andrew's power a non-issue for chaotic Coyote. Well, let's hope for some exposition on Monday. Every time I see strings, I get excited and think about Anansi. I doubt he/she would be a good fit for Andrew, but one can hope.

Those strings on Smitty's hands are a cool nod to Carlos Castañeda from Tom.
In his books the narrator learns some kind of shamanism from two old native mexicans. He keeps getting amazed at the impossible feats his teachers are able to perform, like taking huge leaps or walking on vertical tree trunks as if they were the floor.
Then one day he manages to "click" his vision into seeing the "hidden reality" of the world and becomes able to see people as "eggs of light" with light "tentacles" coming from the region where the stomach is (usually the area related to will and volition on new age beliefs). When the shamans are performing their miracles, the narrator can see the "tentacles" reaching into things.
Wonder if he is one of Tom's influencers. Their stories touch in some similar themes, as hidden/paralel realities you "wake up" to, magic as tapping into that realities, and also native american shamanism and animism. I'm an skeptic atheist and not into new age but his books are awesome.

Maybe, it's a matter of wearing your Etheric "skin" on your sleeve. I'm pretty sure that it's just colored=spirit/being/presence/<intangible> actively in ether and gray=body in physical world. There's many examples within Red Gets a Name where both the bodies and the spirits are visible at the same time, the body being gray and passive while the spirit's floating around doing other things. As for why Anja's gray there, I'm guessing it's because Anja didn't deem it necessary to project herself. If she's aware of the way it looks, she might have even actively decided not to just to keep it simple for Annie and allow the stone to stick out from her hand more. It's not like Annie needed to pop out every time she manipulated it.

...Oh! His right hand! It's always been his right hand! Actually, in the last "panel" there are 3 bands on his left wrist, too. Smitty, don't put those in your mouth. Etheric strings, tasty tasty. :V Fun fact: spiders usually eat their web after it becomes useless. No point to waste protein, and all that. I'm pretty sure that it's just colored=spirit/being/presence/<intangible> actively in ether and gray=body in physical world.
